I just bought a set of bosch platinum spark plugs for my 73 c20 454. Are they ok plugs? The plugs that are in it now are AC that are about 5 years old.

i like em. never had any probs. actually reduced foulling on 275k mile 350

AC or Autolites are all I run in my Chevys.

At 1st I thought they were great plugs for the $ but I have been getting a lot of failures with them and have since stopped running them. AC-Delco is #1 choice for your truck.

I need to retract my previous statement. I read Bosch but somehow had a senior moment and thought Autolite. I run Autolite in most of my trucks, that or A/C Delco. I have run the Bosch platinums in the past but had several off them have the center electrode come out. It didn't come out all the way, just out far enough to hit the outer electrode, and cause a fouled cylinder. If you will look at the center you will see the electrode is a small wire surrounded by the porcelyn. They work good until this comes out for some reason. Sorry about the mis- understanding.

I don't care for Bosch plugs
I've found they foul easily
I do like NGK's on small blocks
there is nothing wrong with AC's

Can you swap=em out for Autolites or a/c Delco ???

I probley could return them but I don't know if its worth it 50miles round trip to return them.

The #1 failure I've found has been the conductive core breaks apart. The result is an increase in cyl kv firing voltage in random cylinders. Not only does this lead to cylinder misfiring but uneven cylinder balance and an overworked coil. You should run R44T in your truck

I am in the same boat, just next time in town, snag a set of A/C's or Autolites, and put'em in the glovebox, just in case. May not need them, but it's less than 8 bucks, and is cheaper to have them than to have to make a special trip for them. For now, I would run-em, and get the others just for backup. Ok, thanks guys.
Ill install them tomorrow, and let you know how it goes. And I will also pick up a set of the R44T's and keep them in the truck just incase, when I'm in town next.

Well today I changed the oil, air filter, pcv filter, gas filter, and put the bosch plugs in. The old plug were well pretty done. Put the new ones in and it fired right up and I drove it home 6 miles and it ran fine. So I guess Ill see what happens.

The probelm won't be immediate and may not happen at all. It has been a while since I tried them, so they may have fixed it. For now, enjoy your ride.

Does anyone know if its the single prong plugs that fail or the 2+,4+?
I also today decided it was the day to change my tranny filter/oil. I took her out for a little spin after all the maintenance and it runs great. The plugs still kinda worry me. IDK we'll see what happens

the single, don't worry about it, it won't just shutdown on you, you will develop a miss, but for now, don't worry.

I tried Bosch one time. Had a mis-fire on 2 of the plugs, swapped out the 2 with the original plugs to get it running on all 8. I bought another set of AC and never had a problem again.

everyone is talking about AC Delco, autolite.....I have used Champion for many a moons without any problems. B4 I changed out my engine on my 79 to a 383, the 350 had many miles on it and I went to a hotter champion truck plug and she never missed one beat nor fouled.

I had bad experiences with Champion plugs, but on the industrial side. A set of Champions would last, at best, half the life as the other plugs (Manufacturer brand) and on more than one occassion had a couple of plugs not work when new. Now this was a 16 cylinder industrial gas compressor, but still enough to make me leary. Honestly, I have not used champion in an automotive application for years, si the the automotive feild, I can't say anything good or bad about them. I have had bad experience with Splitfire plugs in a newer Jeep, and a couple of other vehilces, so I am not impressed with them. Even done some testing on them, but that is another story.

Champions don't last as long but they wear nicely. I use them in all Chrysler applications. I use only Delco in GM. I use motorcraft in fords and NGK in most foreign applications. the Bosch platinums always fail down the road.

So far its good. But Ill pick up another set of AC's Or Autolites soon.
