fairly new to the world of carbs.
« on: December 07, 2010, 12:10:41 AM »
I'm 17 and rebuilt my engine myself when I was 16. But, I wouldnt dare venture into the world of rebuilding my qjet. And, my procrastination caused my rebuild kit to get left out in the rain and get destroyed. So, My carb leaks fuel into my vacuum lines, takes a bit of time to come down from high rpms, and sputters when I jump on the throttle, and it is tuned to the best anyone i know can tune it. So, I am looking to replace my carb, but I'm on a STRICT budget. Like, $50 bucks preferably, $75 at max. I'm finding a few holleys on craigslist, but the primaries and secondaries are the same size, where on my intake, the primaries are smaller than the secondaries(spreadbore?). So, I wanted to know if there were a way to use the holleys I am finding on my truck without getting a new intake. Probably a fairly novice question, but its my first truck and what nots. Thanks in advanced.

You can find the adapter plates in the section where the parts store sells carbs usually.  If you can rebuild your engine you can handle rebuilding a quadrajet.  The hardest part is getting the levers back in place around the choke.  Most of it is dead simple.  If you buy a $75 carburetor there's a good chance it needs rebuilt.

Holley carbs are SQUAREBORE, all the holes are the same size.  Q-Jets are SPREADBORE, 2 small primaries and to large secondaries.

You need a "squarebore to spreadbore" adapter, like this one.  I have this one on my truck.  works great.
