crane 'enegizer' cam? (long)
« on: April 24, 2003, 06:40:00 PM »
I know some of you recommended a different cam package but i thought i would ask about this one.
here is what i know about it,
degree of duration= 204/204
degree of advertised duration (??)= 260/260
lobe seperation=110
valve lift= .427/.427
smooth idle, daily use, fuel economy, good low end power, 1600,2200 cruise rpm, 8.0-9.5 compression advised.
200$
how much power would i notice if i add this to my intake, headers and maybe a new carb? i figured since i cruise at that rpm it would be best, or should i get the other one that advertises towing/offroad but a 2200-2700 cruise (which i dont do)
can anyone run me by the install? Ive 'yoinked' a cam out of an engine just like mine but it was a rush job and we never put any of it back together. can you put the harmonic balancer back on or does it have to be set a certain way? I have no idea about timming, or how to install the timing chain. never messed with any of this stuff before. nothing i dont think i can figure out though.

good cam for a 305
« Reply #1 on: April 26, 2003, 12:10:00 PM »
If I remember from your other post, this was for a 305, right? This is a great cam for a low compression, high geared truck. However, $200 is way too much for the cam and lifters...local speed shops carry the cam and lifter sets for about $110 when not on sale. How about more specifics...vehicle, gearing, tranny,  etc.

sorry im used to having my truck specs located below my post. im runng a 79 GMC sierra 4 speed manual with bulldog, np 205 t-case, 350 v8 dynomax headers, true duals with flowmasters, 4 in lift and 35 in tires. i am not 100% sure but i think my rearend could be a 3.73, 12 bolt with the corp 10 bolt up front.. where can i find it cheaper? i seem to have found it higher many places. how much power will i notice and  will it effect my highway rpms much? i currently run 55@ 1600 and oddly enough my speedometer is right on (unlike it was with 32's) Im just looking to add more power when towing and uphill driving. having 3 forward gears doesnt give me much choice. Its either run 2nd real high or put it to the floor in 3rd. (towing up hill) Id like to hear all you can tell me about this cam and the installation process.

Since it is a 350 I would almost recommend the 266 energizer. However, considering the very low cruise rpm and the need for max low end grunt, the 260 energizer will work fine for you. As far as specific details of swapping a cam, I highly suggest you get a haynes or chiltons manual as there are really too many things involved to try and type it out. But, I will be glad to help if you need it.

i dont recall if i posted this previously or not but i helped my friend tear down his 350 (same model as mine) and i know how to take the cam out, (putting it in is just the opposite, right?) wasnt hard with the motor out, but mine will have to stay in. but i just dont know little things like, if the harmonic balancer has to go back on a certain way or if you just pop it back on. Im not sure i understand all the timming options. Some people ive read match the bottom timming chain sprocket with the notch in the top one. I know you can advance and retard all of it. and im not really sure how to do the timing. Find top dead center and your #1 piston, thats all i know. I can probably handle the lifters without much problem, or am i underestimating them? Unbolt the rocker take the rods out, take out the lifter, put in the new one, put your rod back and your rocker. right? sorry if its long, i like to REALLY research stuff before i start on projects. especially on my daily driver. thanks for all your help! ill have to get a manual for sure.

by the way, when you say 260/266 do you mean the durations?

First off, good call on the single pattern cam. They tend to make more low end torque compared to a dual pattern unit. $200 is way to exsepncive for cam+lifters. As for the specs, its a very tiny cam! Hardly a improvment over stock. This cam would be classifiy'd as a stock replacment for very slight power improvment. Stock cams have like 194/200@.050 duration. Id go with somthing more like comps 260H high energy cam, 214@.050. It makes EXELLENT torque. In my 383 with 9:1 compression, stock heads, and one cylender not firing [yes it was almost completly dead] I could roast the rear tires at will in first or second with a 3.42 rear.

well i found it at jegs.com for 169.99. it says the kit includes cam, lifters, decals, and instructions. sounds like a better price/performance package to me.

is the page. appreciate all the advice fella's. do you guys think i could drive the truck across the street after i get everything installed and let the shop get the timming? is that 'safe'?

If your unsure about what to run call Comp Cams. I used to have granny in my old truck and I ran a Comp Cam 280H. I dont remember the duration but the lift was .480 all the way. I didn't order this cam from them... friends always got nice things laying around. Just wish I had a little bit better set of heads on the old motor.
