GM recommends using splice clips for soldering splice connections and these are what I use as well

Splice clips can be found at ClipsAndFasteners.com as well for a decent price.

Thanks bd, your replies always clear things up!  So I found a place that will sell me 20 of these for under 40 cents each.  Is this the correct item?   This looks like the easiest and neatest way to combine the wires back together.

Those should work.  I recommend that you strip off the vinyl jacket before crimping and then solder the joint after crimping.  Once the joint is crimped and soldered it can be sealed in marine grade heat shrink to insulate the splice and reject dust and moisture.
