Axel shaft spins with wheel but drive shaft doesn't
« on: May 08, 2016, 03:19:46 PM »
83 k10 Scottsdale. I was changing brakes today and was messing around with the locking hubs to check if they were working properly..one works fine the wheel alone spins when it is unlocked and when it is locked it spins the drive shaft. I got to the other side and it's not working properly. When it's locked or unlocked it spins just the axel shaft but not the drive shaft. It's been making a grinding/slipping noise when in 4 wheel under heavy load. Im going to replace the locking hubs but I'm wondering if there is a bigger issue here. When the hubs are locked and you spin either wheel should the drive shaft spin with it? Maybe it's because I only had one wheel off the ground at a time?

Locking hubs engage the hub to the axle not to the driveshaft. You are spinning the differential. If they engage and disengage they are working fine.

You have a bigger issue, sounds like the hubs are working, but something in the diff is bad

One of the hubs doesn't disengage, which means the differential has been spinning. New hubs are on the way. Hopefully it's easier to diagnose once I know it's not the hubs.
