Title: Installed new u joints and there very tight
Post by: c10rider on September 24, 2018, 02:47:13 PM
Hi everyone I have a 74 c10 and I installed the U joints and they feel very tight I was wondering if I should shave down the clips to loosen them up or should I leave them tight , I took out the new u joint thinking that a needle bearing had fallen to the bottom but the bearings were in tact so I bought another one and installed it and it’s also tight , someone told me that they will loosen up , I’d like more opinions please thank you

I take it that they do move, right?

They will loosen up, make sure you grease them well, and re-grease them in soon.

Assuming you installed the correct u-joint, chances are that the yoke(s) slightly collapsed during installation of the u-joint cups.  If that is the case, you can relieve the binding by driving the yokes outward (away from the u-joint) using a long taper punch and hammer.  One or two firm whacks should be sufficient.  Be careful to position the punch so that it doesn't crack or deform the cups or the yoke.
