edelbrock intake
« on: April 04, 2003, 12:19:00 PM »
scored an edelbrock intake for 40$ slightly used. How should the swap go? Pretty easy? Anything i should check/do while ive got the intake and the water pump off. A cam would be nice but i dont know enough about timming to pull it off...
what kind of perf gains will it give me? 5 horses and some throttle response, something like that? thanks!

truely the intake wont gain you much by itsself........a cam would be nice along with headers. it will take a little time to do the swap.....pay attention to detail somethings from stock manifold may not go back the way they sould on the new one. let us know how it goes.

yeah i was kinda trying to place in my mind where everything would 'plug' in. Ill swap it sometime next week. still gotta get gaskets, bolts, water neck, and probably some coolant. I can see myself trying to pour the old stuff out of some jug and me spilling it all over the place. Say i put this intake on can i do ANY cam (would rather have a crane than edelbrock) down the road, or does it have to be 'tuned' in with this intake?

which intake exactly did you buy? performer or RPM? if its a performer id recommend the comp 268 or the extreme energy for 4x4 if you have 4x4.........let me know. Buy felpro gaskets and do not use the rubber end gaskets cause they will leak and or squeeze out when torqueing the head down.

i got the 4x4 for sure! are you talking cams? Its a performer intake. I may do a cam, if i find the right price in the right time. Buying all the extra stuff is what gets you, timing chain and all that. I just know bits and pieces of how to put things together. I can take a cam in and out but im not good at setting timing, i dont know anything about the timing chain setup either, plus you hafta get the other parts for the cam. How much do the chains usually run? Think i could get it all done in a day?

If this is a daily driver, then stay away from a XE series cam. The ramp rates are much too fast to last any length of time [100,000miles just aint going to happen]
The xe 4x4 line is a waste IMO. Compared to the normal XE line, the 4x4 provides the same amount of torque, with less HP. The split between intake and exaust duration is too big.

on a stock small block they like more exhaust duration cause the ports suck, and as far as driving daily they are just fine. what is your credibility to say other wise? not like hes running a 700 lift roller cam..............im sure the 4x4 cams have different timing events for the cam lobes as compared to a 2wd.

What carb are you using? I'd get a good carb with that manifold.. I dont see the point on putting your stock carb back on top of that manifold.

well i had my brother (who is a carb. God) look at it over the winter, really hard to keep running when cold. Turned out the choke thermostat had two hots to it instead of the ignition hot and a ground. DUH! it was open all the time no matter what. He was going to rebuild it anyhow but it was suprisingly clean, does really well now. I still gotta get this intake on. Been busy with tires :lol  thanks for the offer though.

i take the base plate apart and machine the throttle shaft bore out to accept bushings cause this is a main wear out point that can cause a Q jet to run like @#%$. i know a lot of little secrets about these carbs. well thats good you got it dialed in.
