Title: 1984 GMC K10 Build
Post by: GMCMedic on January 07, 2017, 03:09:48 PM
Ill update this as I can when I am on my computer as I removed most of the truck photos from my phone.

Sadly this is the only complete picture of the truck that I have.

Since this photo it has been tore down and the body work on the fenders completed.

Disclaimer: I am not a mechanic so I cannot get very techincal with certain things. Ive been fortunate enough to be close friends with a couple guys that own their own shop. They help me out with the build and teach me along the way.

Im going to skip the front end tear down and fender work and jump ahead to the cab.

But first, early last summer I shot the frame with rustoleum. It isnt awful
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170114/a533c7e69ff8c033bb96fa1a3df4d5d7.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170114/2da912b1c46829d60c6b3386c53f9dd1.jpg)

I got the cab tore down today and removed the glass, cutting and welding has started.
Looks like the only unexpected parts to order is the firewall insulation and a spring for the gas pedal.

Cab is sanded down, only a few small dings to repair and a few holes to weld up. Sadly this cab had spotlights on both A post, a hole for a CB antenna, and two different size cab lights throughout its life. Makes for a lot of work.

Busy day. Wire wheeled the windshield channel and fire wall, smoothed out some of the roof and ground some spot welds. We got the drivers side spot light holes and grab bar holes welded up.

Passenger side patch work should be done this week and we can start bondo on the cab.

Called it quits early after I didnt move my hand fast enough and collided a finger with a flap wheel. Waiting for stitches now lol

Nothing to report. I sanded on some bondo yesterday. Ordered the rear brake line and inner fenders today. I was going to order a complete bolt kit and the front brake line kit but they were out of stock. Ordered the shocks instead.

Inner fenders and rear brake line shipped today. Shocks should arrive tomorrow. I hope to finish out the prep work and primer next week, as well as the remainder of the parts list.

Epoxy sealant has been sprayed. Hope to spray primer tomorrow. Then likely bring the bed in to get it sanded down and to the same level as the cab.

Sanded the first coat of epoxy. Brought the bed inside for next time, we have a few dings to fix and we can get to the level as the cab.

Brought the gas tanks and exhaust home to clean up and paint.

My friend got bored last night and started sanding on the bed. Looks like we need a tailgate handle and both latches and gas door hardware, im ordering a complete bolt kit so ill wait and see if the hardware comes in the kit.

The previous owner just filled the dents with bondo, my friend started working on knocking them out last night, the goal from the start of this project has been to use as little bondo as possible and were going to continue that philosophy.

We also got a quote for paint, I thought $750 for paint and clear was a pretty good deal for a 2015 color, but im new at all this.

Ive been all over the Internet trying to find the best way to dye seat belts. Ultimately my wife was the deciding factor and is making me buy new seat belts. Im not going to argue.

Lastly, never add it up!

Before anyone asks, we are not painting the inside of the bed because:

A: paint is expensive and I already have a plastic bedliner

B: as you can see this bed was once drilled for a 5th wheel hitch. It wasnt until recently that i knew they made patch panels so later down the road we will fix that.

C: when we fix that im going to get spray on bedliner anyway.

I feel your pain there. I hate sanding.

You can buy a gallon of paint for less than $25 bucks which you could put inside the bed. Better than leaving it the way it is.

Even though its getting spray on bedliner? The timeline for this would be measured in weeks. Maybe 2 months at most.

My bed is in the same phase as yours. Priming and block sanding. Painting next week.

I have been doing a lot of research on spray on bed liners. And since i probably wont be hauling nothing harsher than cotton balls, i could probably get away with walmart rustoleum bedliner for $40. But,,,,i have found tons of great reviews and checked out a truck that has the Raptor. And i found it on Amazon for $115, free ship, no tax and it comes with a gun. Therefore, Raptor it is.

Ordered a deck, speaker wire, and amp wiring. If the IRS would ever stop messing around I can order the remainder of my parts.

It amazes me how far technology has come with car audio yet the prices have plummeted.

The Benzie box stereo came before the removable face plate stereo.
With the  Benzie box the whole radio was removable.
Most people would remove the radio from the dash when not in use and hide it under the seat or put it in the trunk.
It didn't take thief's long to figure this out.
Here is a picture I found online of the Alpine 7903 like I owned years ago.

Got brakes all the way around and manual locking hubs today. Also ran all of the brake lines, undercoated the cab, ran fuel lines to the drivers side tank, replaced the selector valve, and fully installed 1 of 7 shocks. I need bolts for the rest.

Auto parts store gave me two different colored calipers. OCD is in full swing.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170329/d1649943cbd8201279380212a95b66ea.jpg)

Why on Earth would the return connectors on the selector valve be 5/16's when the return lines are 1/4"? That caused a lot of confusion for several hours.

All the return lines on my truck were 5/16", the vent lines were 1/4".

At least you can stretch 1/4" over 5/16", but it is much harder to properly clamp 5/16" to 1/4".

I guess that would make sense different years may use different size lines. Im eliminating the charcoal cannister (it wasnt hooked up anyway and the 5/16 line was gone). It made for a really interesting night trying to figure out what was what. It wasnt terribly hard till we starting thinking too much about the size of the return line vs the selector valve.

Are you sure you want to cover up those beautiful bed rails with the diamond plate?

This truck will be used as a truck, the bed rails wouldnt be pretty for long. I plan on driving it till the cab corners and rockers rust out again.

Motor goes in Tuesday and then its pretty much at a standstill till Classic Industries ships me the bolt kit thats been out of stock forever (I should get it next week). Also waiting for square hole washers from Fastenal so I can manage to take the bed off again later.

A handful of companies still make tube steps for these trucks with the brackets needed. Some are cab length and some are cab and front half of bed. By looking at his picture, the step pads indicate those are SmittyBilt brand steps. I think SmittyBilt, Westin, Summit Racing, Nerf and a few others are the ones that make sets for squares.

More progress today. Wired up rear flood lights and a new trailer harness. Welded the washers to the bed and bolted it down. Obviously the liner and tool box went in so I checked the bed off the to do list.

Ran the remainder of the fuel lines to the carb and for the tanks.

Sorted a large shipment, mostly interior stuff and the vent window rebuild kits.

Just have some misc engine stuff and some random electrical in the engine compartment to do. Its mostly interior left at this point. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170412/4601e54925bda4429976976eb3b10611.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170412/8b0ae80f9502c45e115c97fbed53ff1a.jpg)

Ive put a few hundred miles on daily driving. So far i had the driver side shoulder belt fail after a dozen uses. Switched the passenger side over an ill call and complain monday. Both belts were brand new.

The gas gauge doesnt work with the left side tank so ill look at that this week. I track my mileage anyway so its not a huge deal. No other issues to report.

Ive had several people compliment the truck and one offer to buy it.

I don't pay any attention to the offers to buy

They are 99.9% wanna be's

My son called the other day saying someone had offered him $8k for his
Told him 97% of Americans did not have $8K in the bank
And
Told him he'd never hear from the guy again when he got home and thought it over , plus you'll spend that just in parts building another one

Did younger all stock AC parts ?

Its been a mostly uneventful 700 miles so far. Gas mileage seems to be improving but its been harder to check lately cause ive been filling gas cans out of state to top of the truck (save $5 on every fill up just with the truck).

The other morning the steering seemed tight pulling into the driveway. I got out and the gear box was leaking power steering fluid. Im not mad, I didnt replace it so it was likely original. A few hours in the heat and the power steering was fixed.

Something is up with the drivers side tank. I had to solder a ground onto the sending unit and run it to the frame. The gauge will work intermittently if I fiddle with the wire. I cleaned up the contact on the frame but it didnt fix it. Its to much work to drop the tank so ill keep fiddling with it as needed.

And the front passenger side parking light burned out already. Probably cause i bought cheap amazon LEDs. Ill upgrade it but its too hot to pull the grill off right now.
