Title: Time to Play - "Name That Noise." Worn belts?
Post by: Spool on April 13, 2021, 09:43:04 PM
Hey guys.
73 c20 here.

Have a squeaking noise when I accelerate and I'm thinking it might be my fan belt.
What do you think?

I know this sound corny and expect someone to flame me for not recommending belt dressing but for giggles take a bar of soap and carefully touch it to a moving belt. If it quiets it buy some belt dressing spray. Okay it was an old trick my dad used to do.

Never use belt dressing! They make it because people buy it, not because it works, just like blue Permatex RTV and many other products that just sell. If the belt is squealing, it's either not tight enough, contaminated or worn.

Thanks Vile and Johnny.

I did buy some belt conditioner about a week or so ago- tried a bit of it with a cold engine on parts of the belt that were accessible.
It didn't work.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the bottom of my fan shroud was cracked and not supported in its proper bottom clips.
I unscrewed the top two screws, lifted the shroud, placed it correctly, and tightened it up- yet the shroud should be replaced.

The belt looks a bit worn and is made in Mexico. The belt was also adjusted when my infamous mechanic replaced the power steering pump that I may or may not have needed...

In proper efforts of making the noise go away- do you guys happen to know the size of a proper fan belt to replace it with?
I'd like to pick one up online that is preferably made in USA. I might add in an alternator belt with the order as well.

Don't know if there is a better answer, but change your belt and see if it works. Your video was not too revealing, just saying...

Gates belts are pretty good....  ;D
