Engine dies

Engine was surging(but still running) on my truck.Took off the undersized muffler that was causing way to much back pressure.Now it runs on high idle until I kick off the automatic choke then stalls.

Since nobody has replied to this yet, i'll take a stab at it.  You probably checked the obvious; idle set screw adjustment, throttle return spring, etc.  It really sounds like a bad vacuum problem.  You sure your carb to intake gasket has no air leaks?  Carefully spray some wd40 or starter fluid around all gaskets.  You sure your emissions hoses are attached correclty?

This is obvious stuff but you may wanna recheck it.

If all this stuff checks out, I would think the carb is the culprit.  Is the carb brand new? May be a defect.

When you say sprat wd40 around it ,what exactly do you mean?

spray WD40 around the base of the carb to see if the idle changes any.  If it does, you have a vacuum leak.

Sounds like the EGR is bad. I would do the regular checks for vaccum leaks. if you spray wd it will be suck in to a leaking area and the motor will run rough. and there will be the leak. Can do the same thing with water.

Sorry pugsy, I forgot that part about spraying it around the gaskets to see if the rpms go up.  Heck, I don't guess you have squeaks in your gaskets.  I guess i should proof read my replies.

Are you sure your timing is absolutely correct?  You have an older type motor in your truck, you can play around w/ the timing to find your best marks.  Could the timing chain been put on wrong (ie: lining up the timing gears of cam and crank).  One notch off will really ruin your day.

Any of these would cause it not to idle but would still run at high rpms.

Just throwing some things out there.

Timing chain marks are lined up dead on.Timing was good before I played with the exhaust system.I'll check the timing again and for vacuum leaks.I've ordered a rebuild kit for the carb (Edelbrock 600 cfm),,should get it in about a week.
