Title: Heads only
Post by: Tazman on March 21, 2015, 11:54:16 PM
I have been throwing around the idea about replacing my engine in the near future since it just turned 204k miles. I have been told that you can give new life to a motor by just replacing the heads. Does this sound like a good idea?

Thanks,
Joe

this is true but at 204k i would think about a rebuild just to freshen up rings and bearings

This would really depend on the shape of the motor. If you got good compression I wouldn't worry about doing a rebuild. SBCs are quite easily one of the most bulletproof engines and the bottom ends last forever even if mistreated.

I would say crank bearings would be something more to look into.

Are we talking 5.7L original engine? With 200K I would give it a complete overhaul.

If it's the original engine to the truck and you want to keep it that way then overhaul it.

You can have a shop do it or do it yourself. Then you can add performance parts if your interested in that. If you don't care what engine it has then get a crate engine of which ever variety you choose.
