'82-'87 model Silverados
« on: March 21, 2006, 12:10:00 PM »
Hi,
Rather than retro fit my '74 with A/C and 700R4 ec. I am thinking about maybe getting a newer (82-87) truck.

I notice from the specs on the 87 TBI engine it has quite a bit more power than previous engines. (In my area, Portland,Or., they test emissions back to 1975 so I would need the original emmissions equipment.)

Are there any issues with the TBI engines? It appears the L05 is not a roller cam motor? Are the heads any good? I have tried to get specs on this motor with little luck.

I take it the curb weight of an '87 (2wd, 350, swb) would be about the same as my '74 stepside?

Is it worth it to limit my search to 1987 just to get the TBI?
I am sure it will take months to find the right one if I am only searching for a 1987.

Thank you!

If you want to stick to the "rounded line" model trucks, 87 is the only one w/ TBI.    86 and older had carbs.

Others may share their knowledge of these engines, but I don't think there were many negative issues w/ this year.

As Del said, if you want the 73-87 version, 1987 is the only year that had TBI.

There are no issue with them as far as I am concerned.  TBI's make an excellent driver.  I purchased mine last year for that purpose.  Mine has the 305 on it.  When researching, you can look at the 88-89 motors in the new trucks also, they are identical.
