Advanced adaptors for a 4L60E to NP205. any advice???
« on: March 08, 2015, 02:21:49 PM »
Hey I'm new to the site and never really worked much on 4wds. I've got a 81 k10 that I'm doing an ls swap on.  So my question is, has anybody done this and what i should watch out for?  Basically I just want to know if it's any good and if it works. I called AA and the guy was less than helpful especially when I asked about the electronic connection to the computer.  I'm hoping can find a 205 out of a 91 3500 but if i can't I think I'll just bite the bullet and buy the adapter for $750. Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks

i dont know why but each time i see a 4l60 or 4l60e i think "why spend the money on a 60 when you can upgrade to a 4l80e" before you buy anything do some research that  205 you want with electric speedo will be 32 splines the 4l60e is going to be 27 so they wont match up. by time if you can find a 27 spline long shaft and the adapter you might be spending 1k real fast. just look at every option before you buy anything

I think a 208 bolts right up to a 4L60 or 80
Depending on spline Count

A NP-241 from a 88-91 blazer or Burb should work too

A lot easier to find than a round pattern 32 spline 205
Those things are gold    Around $600 plus shipping

i want to clear something up in my mind roundhouse, i only know of the 4l80e being bolted to a 205. the adapter off a th400/205 can be put on a 4l80e with a little modification. what i want to know is it the same story for a th400/208, can you take the adapter and t case from that and make it work for a 4l80e. i would like to make a sticky that will say what you need to do for each setup

I think the NP-208 bolts up to anything that the NP-241 will bolt to

There is no adapter used , it bolts right up

At least that's what I found when researching for swapping out a SM-465 to a NV-3500 5 speed

Everything I found , and I will post up the links when I get back to my laptop and find them , said to find a passenger drop transfer case from behind a 4L60 or 80

Those cases could be a NP208 or 241
And 241s came in both passenger drop up thru 91 and driver drop after 91.  And the input shaft is easy to swap, just a snap ring, to get the right spline count
One has a 27 spline and one had a 32 spline.   I can't remember right off which had what

the 60 is 27 so anything behind that would have 27
and the 80 is 32.
the sm465 79-91 had 32 splines, pre-79 had 10.
i remeber reading something about the "round" pattern will bolt up to some transmissions just didnt know which ones

this might help you out

I know the round pattern 205 or 208 or 241 will bolt directly to a NV3500 with no adapter
Supposed to bolt to a 4L also. But I've not done that so can't say for sure
Although the 241 came from the factory bolted to the 4L with no adapter in both driver drop and passenger drop
Which electronic conection are you concerned about ?

Also have you looked at car-part.com ?
And at coloradoK5 ?
And 47-present Chevy trucks

For the transfer case?
I'd buy a LS motor trans and t case combo from a wrecked vehicle and swap it all in

All you have to do is find a passenger drop 241 from a 88-91 blazer or Burb and swap the input shaft from the 241 in the combo

i know my 91 4l80e/205 has and something like 3½" adapter.

this is a nv5600 but its pretty much the same thing i think

it looks like a round pattern would bolt right up but the output shaft looks too short for a round 205 with the long shaft. so you might need a short input shaft (or cut down the long one) with a spacer to clear the input shaft bearing housing.

got to make a sticky about some "good" information about this stuff.
but while i was writing this i found a 4l80e/205 adapter on ebay for $100. i price that low i couldnt let it go. the sad part is i dont need it but i know its a good deal

heres another for $225

Late to the party but will need the np241 as stated above to run the vss, i have read somewhere where you can swap the tail housing from the 241 with vss to the np208.  The adapter on the newer 4l60e/65e/70e will accept the np241. as its what i am installing tomorrow.  and the np241 i have came with the adapter from 4 bolt round to the 241 and measured about 3.5-4 in. where as the one on my 4l70e measures a tad over 5in from mounting to mounting surface. Ill try to snap some pics in the am if you end up wanting some.

Try your local junkyard for a t-case. got mine from a local yard for 150 already pulled and everything, can try craigslist. pirate4x4, havent seen any forsale on chevyk5 for awhile either.  and with swaping in the newer transfer case will end up being a driver side drop and not passenger side drop, more than likely will be electronic shift,  this is the t-case that came with my 4l70e.
