Glad to see someone else is getting into these Military trucks. you can't beat them for the money. Can't wait to see what your plans are for it. What do you have in mind?
Those Fisher MM push plates are worth the $200 alone. You see what guys are paying for the Dana 60's alone.
I think this truck may have been your best score yet.

There is a CUCV pickup for sale at tiny car lot near my home. Its been there for a while, not sure how much they want for it. They also had a CUCV Blazer, but it was sold only a few days after they got it.

Is there anything wrong with it or is the previous owner just really numb?
Title: Re: Here I go again! Found another one
Post by: VileZambonie on April 17, 2010, 04:16:56 PM
The guy I got it from needed to get it out of the place it was at and he thinks it has a blown head gasket. It fired right up for me but I haven't checked it out. The body is near mint and the truck apparently came from Virginia. It's got Dana 60, THM400, NP208 and very low miles. I'll go through it later. I just realized that my Wii connects to the internet and I just downloaded Zelda, Super Mario and Castlevania. I think I'm just gonna veg and take it easy today lol

Title: Re: Here I go again! Found another one

I think due to the low mileage and it being in Virginia had a lot to do with it.
Title: Re: Here I go again! Found another one
Post by: thirsty on April 18, 2010, 06:56:14 AM
I do some work for a guy that has had one of those for about 10 years. He is a contractor and has had multiple other trucks over the years and says not one of the newer trucks is nearly as good as "ole Camo" as he calls it. He puts about $2000 a year into it he claims to keep it worthy of trips from northern NH to Nantucket. More than once I've seen him roll out of town with that loaded with firewood to take with him. He was going to sell it this spring but changed his mind when he found out the buyer was just going to take the axles out. He had the injection pump fixed and kept it instead. Glad he did, I like to see that truck around.

Hey vile I'm serous. You have any axles laying around?
Title: Re: Here I go again! Found another one
Post by: Blazin on April 18, 2010, 08:46:30 AM
There are about a dozen of them running around here. Any where from perfect condition, to rust buckets, to lifted with a 454 swapped in. Two of them have plows on them. Plus the next town over from me the highway dept. has two if them, and one Blazer, all three have a plow. That same town's police dept. has two of the Blazers.

Irish I only have one spare Dana 60 and it's for my mutt if I decide to use it.
Title: Re: Here I go again! Found another one
Post by: fitz on April 18, 2010, 09:15:51 AM
Vile, did you look on the door to see if this is a M1028 or a M1008? Both of these trucks came with Detroit lockers in the rear but the M1028 also came with a limited slip in the Dana 60. Thats why we see these turned into plow rigs.
Irish, I think finding a CUCV Military pick up for $200 is once in a lifetime deal, but around here in Mass it's not to tough to find a rotted out 1 ton with a Dana 60 in the 1K range. This may be the cheapest way to score your Dana 60. Between selling off the unwanted parts and the scrap value of the truck you will get your Dana 60 and may make some $$ on the deal.

Title: Re: 1985 M1008
Post by: VileZambonie on June 14, 2010, 12:33:24 PM
Well it's ripped apart and apparently someone dropped something down the intake. It mashed up one of the pistons real good, bent both valves and fractured the cylinder wall. The rest of the engine is like brand new. I could sleeve it and replace one piston, 2 valves, and do a quick rebuild or I could drop the 454 I built for the 75 Blazer in there since I am now considering just selling the Blazer. I just don't have the time for all of these projects right now. So what do you guys think? Drop the Big Block in it's place or do I sink the $ into the 6.2?
Title: Re: 1985 M1008

Great find.  +1 for the diesel if you leave it mil-spec. If you plan to give it a civilian paint job then the big block would be awesome.

I'd love to get it. I have a 6.2 with 70K on it from this rotted out M1009 that I took in trade (the truck is worse than it looks in the pics).

Title: Re: 1985 M1008
Post by: fitz on June 16, 2010, 08:50:01 PM
Hopefully he at least replaced the bolt before he fired it up and destroyed the motor.
I'd be loosing sleep over it if I was the guy you got it from. He destroyed a good motor with 17K on it which led to him selling off a rock solid CUCV.

What do you think of the 6.2 motors in general? I know that they are not the powerhouses that todays diesels are, but are there any known problems with them?
I'm just getting into these Military trucks and  plan to set one of these up for hauling my car trailer.
Title: Re: 1985 M1008
Post by: VileZambonie on June 16, 2010, 09:00:47 PM
What happened was the air cleaner stud was snapped and fell inside the intake. It could very well have been an acident I suppose since the base of the stud is still screwed in there.

The 6.2L is a good engine. It's pricey to rebuild and the problems associated with them are relatively easy for any decent wrench to handle. Are they powerhouses? No way but with the gearing they do have nice low end. I don't know why they weren't turbo'd in the first place but of course all of the newer ones are which kind of gives all of the non turbo diesels the old school slug stamp. If it wasn't for this truck being what it is I would have just converted it to a BBC

I want one of these trucks in the worst way, I sold my M1009 blazer to buy one and lost my funding for it.  This thread brought a tear to my eye.  Lucky man.
Title: Re: 1985 M1008
Post by: VileZambonie on July 01, 2010, 06:45:31 PM
So, the engine is built and we painted the engine camo. It looks pretty cool. Two of my students took the initiative to paint the american flag oil pan. I went to see how they did and it looked something like this:

LOL So then they realized it's a puertorican flag so they're fixing it  ;D
Title: Re: 1985 M1008
Post by: beastie_3 on July 01, 2010, 06:58:36 PM
They confused that with the USA flag? Or did they paint the Puerto Rico because it is a US territory?
Title: Re: 1985 M1008
Post by: VileZambonie on July 01, 2010, 07:05:21 PM
They painted it white, stuck a big star on the pan, painted it blue and did red stripes. I guess they didn't feel like making 50 stars lol

Good deal for you and the buyer. I'm sure you made some $$ on it and no doubt he got a great running truck. I noticed it on craigslist last week. It was tempting, kinda glad it's gone in a way, one less thing to think about buying (picked up a 87 K30 last night).

Some where in the back of my mind there's the thought that these military trucks never had actual titles. If so how did you get a title on it so you could register it and drive it on the street.......or was it never to be driven on the street ???????

The CUCV'S  are auctioned off from the government  with an SF-97 form.  It's the equevilent  of a certificate of origin on a new car.
  I've never had a problem registering & titling a CUCV using the SF-9 7.
The Military HMWWv's are auctioned as "off road use only" and can be tough to get on the road, but people are finding ways to do it.

No issue getting cucv on the road in Georgia
And apparently in a lot of states getting a license plate   On a military humvee is not difficult

In Georgia and a lot of southern states as long as it's not stolen and has all the required lights you can get a tag for it

You might not get a title for it but you can register it and drive it

Texas is probably the odd one then......no title, no registration. I wanted to buy an 80's Dodge military "power wagon" and there was no way to get a title......only folks I know that have purchased them bought them for ranch work.

Yep
Texas is strange about titles

If you lose it , your vehicle won't be on the road again ever

In GA you can easily get a title for a vehicle abandoned at your home or business or a thru a mechanics lien if say, someone takes a vehicle to a mechanic , has work done and never pays the bill

All youd need to do is haul the vehicle to my house and abandon it and I could probably get a title for it

I wonder if there is money to be made buying vehicles in Texas and bringing them back ??

N.C is the same way , if you lose the title ,it just became a parts car .
But if you haul it to GA , and it's not on the list of stolen cars ,you can get a tag and drive it , although you might not be able to get an actual title

I have a 1974 vehicle I've owned and driven since 95 with no title , but I got a registration and tag for it
