Title: 6.0 turbo blowthrough build
Post by: Flyinhillbilly on August 19, 2015, 06:39:30 PM
I picked up a 2001 6.0 with unknown mileage from a salvage yard swap a friend of mine did. The owner of the truck had 4 manifold bolts strip, so rather than deal with that, he just had another engine put in. I ended up being the benefactor of this little transaction picking up the 6.0 from the installer for $700, and promptly traded the non EGR return style intake and $300 for a victor jr intake, MSD 6010 programmable ignition with all wires, patch cords and brackets. I flipped the stock exhaust manifolds and welded on some 2 1/2" sch40 pipe and welded v bands on the ends of those.

Box o ignition stuff. The guy really hooked me up here, he sent me everything I need to hook it to a laptop.

So the last serious effort turbo engine I built turned four pistons into ashtrays before I could lift due to the voltage dropping and I was near the end of my fuel pump anyway, so it went lean and burned up one heck of a 357ci sbc.
We're just going to go ahead and skip that problem this time.

Bolaws performance .500 belt drive fuel pump.

Since I had a belt drive fuel pump, I figured I needed a crank mandrel to drive it. I converted a bbc from mandrel to belts last year, and had the mandrel so I chucked it up in my literally 101 year old lathe and machined a shoulder that juuuuuuust fits inside the machined spot for the balancer bolt, I also center drilled it to fit the bolt nice and tight. I had to special order a 16x20x200mm bolt that should be here by the middle of next week.

Thanks guys.

Mocked up the fuel pump mount, waiting on the crank bolt and pulley to final check all measurements.

It looks like I'm going to have to redo my manifolds since I picked up a pair of 52mm Air Research turbos this morning. The plan was to put a 70mm single in front, but these are fresh rebuilds, just about the right size, and I got 'em cheap.

Where on where is the blow? Anybody know Flyinhillbilly? What happened to the blow through 6.0?

Ditched the GF, was homeless and lived in the truck for a couple of weeks, sold off all the LS stuff, built a forged piston powder metal rod 350 with ported 441's, a Lunati cam, and stuck a 70mm single on it. Put the engine in this weekend and all I'm waiting on now is the turbo exhaust flange then it's on to the tuning phase.

First fire up of the new setup.

Back on the road. No Wastegate spring in it so no boost yet. I figure I'll run about a tank of gas through it to more or less break it in then I'll put the spring back in and start tuning for boost. I made a short video of driving it around, nothing special, but it shire felt good to drive it again.

Idle video. Turbo seems like it's going to spool in a hurry.

Got the exhaust built, I'll take it to the muffle shop in the morning and have him put a couple of hangers on it for me. Just a few more things to do and it's time for positive intake manifold pressure.

Looking good. I would have kept the 6.0 and efi, but either way it's a cool build.

Thanks. I really wanted to do the 6.0, but I had to get in a hurry as the engine that was in the truck was about to the end of it's service life and it seemed more practical to just do a 23degree engine since everything would fit and I could get it done in a hurry. This is my daily driver, so it couldn't take on "project " status.

I understand that. It always sucks when you start a build and the old engine starts letting go before you are ready.

Boosted the truck for the first time tonight. I have the secondaries unhooked at the moment because I like to tune out my primaries and power valve channel restrictors first and then jet the secondaries, but even on the tiny primaries, this thing rips. Video as soon as I can find someone with the nerve to ride in it with me under boost.

Going to try and get the secondaries hooked up and tuned out this weekend. That video was on the primaries only and 3 big boost leaks to help keep it at a reasonable level during the first tuning steps. I think it's going to be pretty fast for an old truck.

You will like a single 76-88mm more. I've done both and would only go with twins if I can't fit a big single.

I concur. The only real reason to do twins IMO is if you can't get the big single down pipe out of the engine compartment, well, that or if you just find a smokin deal on a set of twins or just like the look.

I've always wondered about why people do twins. On my Cummins I have the hx35 she spools up quick and I'm running 40 lbs. I mean what else could a twin do that this hx can't?

Well, nobody actually runs twin turbos on a Cummins. They run compound turbos. The small turbo spools quickly and gets you boosted and going fast, but then the big turbo takes off and gives you more boost at a lower temp than the smaller turbo would. They are a waste of time and money if you are not far from stock, but if you have a lot of mods it is a huge drivability improvement over a big single. Going to twins made my old pull truck go from something I towed to the track and that's it, to a truck that I actually wanted to drive daily.

There is a company that makes a supercharger over a big turbo, compound set up that is pretty impressive. It idles at about 10lbs will light a big turbo almost instantly. I was very impressed with the one I drove.

Took the TBT and the nitro minibike to a mud bog party last night. I was hoping for some great video of my drunken friends trying to ride the minibike, but it ended up intimidating most of them (unusual for these guys) and once the drinking got going good, the minibiking stopped. This is the only video I got of it.
http://youtu.be/lKNMUFIpORg (http://youtu.be/lKNMUFIpORg)

Jesse brought his 5 Ton out as the official rescue rig, and we needed it before the night was over. Here's a little ride along.
http://youtu.be/TI_IiOvoWAE (http://youtu.be/TI_IiOvoWAE)

The truck held up great, no damage other than breaking the strap that holds the battery in, which subsequently broke the heater hose off of the radiator and wiped out the heater core and put a pretty good dent in the air filter. Here's a doughnut fail.

http://youtu.be/KcWyVo1eg0U (http://youtu.be/KcWyVo1eg0U)

Then Jesse got the 5 Ton stuck enough that he had to lock all the diffs to back out, and left some massive hole with his 52inch tires. I was enough beers in at this point that I told him that if I pointed my truck the right direction and spooled the turbo that I could make it through those holes and up the hill too. This was the result.
http://youtu.be/OtsdyDIB3jQ (http://youtu.be/OtsdyDIB3jQ)

Then Rick made the statement that his truck was going to go up that hill. He didn't fare quite as well as I did.
http://youtu.be/XqwPL-I1JEY (http://youtu.be/XqwPL-I1JEY)

So out came the 5 Ton. Rob's commentary was priceless, I wish I would've gotten it on video.

Then after we decided that it was drunk enough to leave everything parked, we had some live entertainment. This guys had auditioned for the voice, and has only been into music for a year. Sounded really good IMO.
