Choke Light????
« on: November 25, 2011, 07:08:44 PM »
I replaced the motor in my truck from a 305 to a 350. I have a 84 SB 4X4. I found a Hot wire in in the engine compartment that had power when the engine was running so I hooked it up to the electric choke. I have a Edelbrock 600 cfm 1406 carburetor. Should I just get another hot wire or ?????

You have a light in the cluster for choke? What year is your truck?

Ceramic Resistor
The electrically actuated ceramic resistor--composed of a small center section for gradual heating and a larger outer section for rapid heating of the thermostatic coil--heats the thermostatic coil gradually relaxing coil tension allowing the choke valve to open.

From what I can gather from the diagram, the ceramic resistor is suppose to open depending on the temp. and once it reaches a set temp.  the bi-metal disc ( bi-metal is 2 different metals that heat at different rates, therefor react to heat differently) closes which is what supplies the current to the large section of the ceramic resistor.

So if your lights is staying on and your choke is operating correctly ( opens fully when warm ) I would say either your ceramic resistor or bi-metal disc is bad, or both.

Did you verify your wiring against the diagram posted above?  It looks like the choke light is powered from the dash and grounds through the choke heater.  When power is supplied through the oil pressure switch to the choke (engine running), it balances the voltage across the light and the light goes out.  Do you have the single Lt Blue wire (Ckt #78 in the diagram) connected to the choke heater?  Does the light go out if you unplug it?

The light will go out when I unplug it. i checked the color and it a dark green wire. I looked at the senor wire for the water temp and its gray. I have another loose wire in the engine compartment thats hot when power is on. Dont know where that one go's too. Color Dark Blue

The oil pressure indicator light also serves as the electric choke defect indicator.
You should have B+to the choke/oil light on the dash with Key on engine off the light should illuminate by way of ground through the choke coil. If you unplug the choke the light should go out. Now plug it back in, start the engine and B+ is applied to the ground side of the light making it go out when the oil pressure switch closes. It's really simple and if you have a test light you can easily determine what the problem is. I can draw a simple schematic if you want to see one.
