good morning

i drive a 1979 big block suburban with th400 and have a special question
regarding my air filter.

look at the photo i have uploaded ...

this type of air filter is installed since i bought the car a few weeks ago.

it has the size of 290mm mal 136mm / 11,4inch by 5,3inch

my seller told me that his offer for a new air filter is
306,324mm by 88,646mm / 12inch by 3,4inch.

which one would be the better for my light truck?

i dont think you will notice a difference. the smaller filter looks better (cleaner) imo but performance i doubt you will see anything. whatever you do keep that air horn with the heat riser hooked up. in the colder months you may see a performance problem without it

The "air horn" Irish mentioned, (proper name- air filter housing), keeping it for cold weather drivability is pointless with a filter that large inside it. That large of a filter basically bypasses the heat riser system completely by drawing in all the cold air above the filter.

The only way, the heat riser system is affective is if the factory size filter and the factory air filter housing cover are both installed. This way, cold air is bypassed and warm air is drawn in until the engine has reached sufficient temperature to open the cold air valve and stop drawing warm air from the exhaust manifold.

The best thing to do is just put the factory size filter and the cover on. A stock engine will not benefit from a larger filter in any noticeable way.

From the photo, it looks like the air cleaner assembly is off an 1980's truck. 

Do you have the correct cover for your air cleaner?  It should look something like in the photo below.



If you have the correct cover, then I would just replace the filter with one identical to what you have. We had an '86 GMC 1500 Suburban with a 350 that had the same air cleaner from the factory.

Jason is on the right path here with the air cleaner cover, he is right about it looking like possibly an 80's air filter housing. The actual correct air filter housing for 1979 is this.

these days I ordered the black one, but it looks like "to small".
the red one looks /imho/ to big ...

and what is the part inside the air filter (the "gold"colored thing)

I also attached a photo from my closed filter.
I miss the thing in front of the "sugtion"cjkdhckskc - sry, dunno the word in english.
is it important to have it???

The little gold thing in your second picture is a Thermostatic temperature switch. At certain temperatures it either opens or closes to either provide or cut off vacuum supply.

The thing in question in your first picture is called the snorkel or air intake duct. It provides a funnel for cold air to be pushed thru the grille into the engine. Not required but the entire system works better when you have it, especially in cold weather.

i have a question again regarding the air filter I bought.
please, look at the photos i uploaded a few days ago.

is the new one (black) the right thing or should I better use
the older one (the red one)?

in my opinion, the black one is to small.
air could find a way above the filter into the system, or?

if your filter doesnt touch top and bottom the air will just bypass it. take your old one in and match it up if you have to

I have only one question more regarding the air filter parts.

how is the rubber/snorkel at the end of the air filter housing called and where could i get it?
u can see that i am missing the "gummiteil" on my car.

Not sure which part your referring to. The snorkel if that's what you mean, is just that, the snorkel OR air intake duct.
