Seat swap?
« on: February 05, 2013, 07:54:57 PM »
I was wondering if anyone knew what seats are able to swap out.  I have a 87 Silverado with a 4 speed. I'd really like one with a console.  Any ideas.  Thanks.

By fit, do you mean direct bolt in?  I think your closest bet for that is to find K5 or Burb buckets.  Still some modification, however slight.

If you're up for some minor fab, there are a ton of options.  I have 90something Dodge minivan seats in my 87.  Before that I had something I pulled at a yard, can't remember what.

A lot of people pull the seats from 01+ Silverados.  You can get the 40-20-40, use the middle as a seat when needed.  I have a set for my K5 I need to put in.  Plus on these is that you get your shoulder belts attached to the seat.  Just gotta put a plate in the floor for extra support.

You can make anything work using the factory floor mounts.  Just cut plates or square tube for an adapter.  Mount the adapter to the top of the floor and the bottom of the seats.  I used steel plate cut to size with holes drilled for the 87 seats.  Just don't skimp on hardware.

Thanks for the tips.  I figured some fan work would be needed.  I have a 2002 Silverado Z71 and I like the seats in it I was thinking of putting the same in my 87. Thanks again

When you decide to make the swap, can you post what you used and any advice on installation would be appreciated.  I too, have an 87 R10 that I want to update the bench seat to either bucket seats, with a separate console, or the newer Silverado 40-20-40 seats.  Thanks. DT

I swapped out the bench in my 85 K10 for buckets from a 1990 Burb. Pretty easy swap really. Make sure you get the floor tabs from the donor truck as the pickups don't have them. Otherwise its a straight bolt in job. You will need to bend the rear part of the seat frames to get them to fit with the contour of the pickup cab floor, but a torch and a little muscle can do that. Pretty easy really.

Bladerunner - good information that will be very useful in my replacing bench to high back buckets.  Many thanks.  DT
