Red line??
« on: March 06, 2003, 08:27:00 AM »
In my 85K10 I have a stock 87 or newer 350 with the  4BBl carb off the old 305 on it. What does this motor redline at? What can I safely run the motor at?

Technically, that engine redlines at around 5000RPM's.  That really depends on your specific engine though.  If you're getting vibrations at 4600, then that may be it for your engine.  I had a stock 350 that sounded great at 5000 and one that was coming apart at 4500.  Both ran solid, one just made it off the assembly with some minor balancing problems.

Redline, speaking just in the how high will the engine live sence, is determined by piston speed. In genral, you dont want to go past 4000FPS piston speed in a chevy v8. For a 3.48" stroke [350 size] that means about 6500rpm max. Then you have to consider other things, like will the crank take it at the power level your running, are the rod bolts old etc. I wouldnt go above 6000rpm myself.

With your stock 350, it stops making power around 4500rpm, so your redline is 5000rpm.

why do you want to twist a stock motor? stock motors are built for efficiency and low RPM use. i agree the redline is about 5-5500 RPM.
