Fuel pump leaking...
« on: January 08, 2017, 08:04:59 PM »
Not 100% sure where the fuel is leaking from the pump, but it's building up in the outer ring around the pump housing. I'm thinking it's actually leaking from that ring somewhere..

Anyway, any suggestions on what pump I should replace it with? I'm guessing I can't simply repair it. This is on my 83 GMC Sierra with a 305 using an Edelbrock 1406 carb. Are the ACDelco pumps any good?

Well, from what I can tell, the ACDelco 41216 fuel pump runs 7.5 to 9 psi. The Edelbrock 1406 carburetor doesn't like anything over 6 psi. So I think my only options are the $125 edelbrock fuel pump or the cheaper ACDelco fuel pump and install a fuel pressure regulator.

Go with the cheaper pump and get this.....https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-220058 it works. Alot of regulators dont go low enough or if they do they are 2-6 or 4-12 and the quality is crap, it has a return line and a spot to put a fuel pressure gauge.

At the price though, I could just get the edelbrock pump XD

I have the EDL 110 gal performance pump, don't recall it being $125.
You'll need fittings and have to modify your lines to the carb a bit.
I would also add an inline pressure gage.
It puts out 6 psi

It didn't cure my vapor lock trouble tho.
I know that's not your issue but thought I'd add it anyway.

I have both the 3 line return and 2 line non return a/c delco pumps in the box new to try and see what pressures they put out and how they affect vapor lock issues. Times not my friend right now tho.

I put the EDL pump on because I had hot start issues due to to high fuel pressure, which it cured.

I believe the high pressure aftermarket counter pumps are a problem for us carb people.

Got any good suggestions for a fuel pressure guage or tester to adjust the regulator?

Auto Zone rents the fuel pressure gauge kit.

You can use a inline setup or just screw the gauge into the regulator if it has provisions for one.

I'm thinking about just getting the edelbrock pump and skipping the pressure regulator.

There has got to be a lower pressure mechanical pump out there.  i'm thinking carter probably has one.

i know for sure that some of the v-6 pumps are rated lower output----like 4-6, but i'm not totally sure if they can be used on a v-8 because on the 6 they are mounted upside-down and thus have a weep hole on the "bottom" of the pump----which is the way it would be oriented if mounted on a v-8.

You could also, use a low pressure electric pump like the one i have (puts out 4-6.25 lbs)

Maybe I am missing something but all the pumps for carbs are going to be low pressure.  Carbs only need 7lbs.

Most of the "standard" fuel pumps are all 8-10psi. The Edelbrock 1406 carb doesn't like anything over 6psi.

Problem is aftermarket pumps can put out too much pressure.

Even the Napa web says says 7-9 psi on their site.

Yup. I think everything I've found says way over 6psi. The Edelbrock pump I found says 6psi and they say it's actually made to go right along with the carb without the need of a pressure regulator.

Get a factory AC Delco pump for it.  this is the pump for the truck https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-41216/

An edelbrock is recommended for 6.5lbs.  Several of them are running around with stock pumps on them.  Most of these ratings are MAX ratings also..
