Dual Tanks

Just wanted to say how driving my truck daily and professionally, I so love the dual tanks...  Must say if anybody wondered, when one tank runs dry and the engine sputters and loses speed, with the flick of the switch, it takes roughly 12 seconds for the other tank to fill the carb bowl and be on my way again.  The one feature I'd hate not having in a new truck is the dual tanks...  cuz even if i forget and run out of gas, i usually have 2 or 3 gallons in the other tank to get me to the station without walking.  God I'd hate to have a single tank work truck....  filling up more often than needed, and not having a reserve.

Very understandable.

I loved my dual fuel configuration (previous truck). 20 gallons of gas and 20 gallons of LPG. Switching with a push on the button, within 5 seconds.

Current truck will get dual LPG tanks on the place of the gas tanks. The entire gas system will be pulled of. This because it is hard to adjust both fuels running well and gas system will fail after a long time running on LPG.

I have dual tanks but only driver side works... I need to get this fixed!

It is nice! I just wish they learned from Ford and put the fillers on one side.

My left tank was disconnected when I got it a few months ago, fuel lines were missing and the gauge needle was pinned at 3 o clock. I bought a new left tank, sending unit, selector valve, connector valve, and lines. It runs great from the new hardware but I think my old right side tank has something nasty in it. It starts to stall at 50 mph or so. I'm just happy the gauge is working now. New right side tank should be here next week.

I'm also liking my dual tanks of my '74.  However I don't like having different locking keys for each side, and both my miss-match caps have bad seals and leak on hills.  So I need to start hunting for the correct locking matching caps, then I'll be truly happy.

My yellow truck has them and both working but with only driving it about 100 miles a year I don't see the benefit.  The only thing I don't like is not having the filler on the same sides like the other brand,,,  My white truck will have them now my new bed has provisions for it, just have to install the factory wiring and switch.

Yea.. you should see peolple look at you when you have to turn your truck around to fill the other side. There like HUH???

I dunno about the ford setup...  while I love that they're both on one side, for convenience, it makes that side look kinda bad cuz it had two huge gas doors on it..  I figureed out the problem, doesnt bother the gas station only other drivers, if the pumps are close enough together, i park in the center and get two pumps going at once. 

I've also ohad people see me pull up to the pump and tell me when i get out, your gas filler is on this this man, I tell em I have one on each side and a couple of guys actually came over to see it...

I usually dont fill them both at the same time, i just fill "the other tank" each fillup.  but with the extra reserve, i run the 20 gal tank down to where i buy 18.5 to 19 gallons of gas at a time, instead of filling up too early. 

I accidentally ran it out on the freeway yesterday too I was so tired, but the flip of the switch saved my butt from a long walk with no gas can 100 miles away from home

dual tank days are gone...my new silverado work truck has a 32 or 34 gallon tank ($100 + for a fillup)...and goes over 500 miles on a tank.

And the truck tells me on the dash how many miles I can travel before I run out....below 40 and it starts warning me how hard it is to push 6000 lbs.

I know what you like about the dual tanks...but filling them is a pain.  My 86 has dual 16 gallon tanks and it is stuck on the left side.  I have the new selector valve..but I need to find time to get it fixed.

When I was a kid in my old '74, I messed up my fuel gauge while trying to clean up my cluster. Didn't bother me none, though. I delivered pizza for my Dad (so budget was always tight), and just ended the night by flipping to the full tank and topping off the other on the way home. Once I started doing that, I never inadvertently ran out of gas.

Of course, a date or two wasn't familiar with the tank setup, so I was able to "run out" in the desert without a lot of risk to anything but my ego... depending on how she reacted.

May not be totally gone for my purposes...  my 2008 impala said I had 57 miles left to the tank but it ran out of gas on i85 anyway...  only way to be sure is to carry the lil can of gas with ya...  computers are good and great but not foolproof.  and on a 40 gallon fillup I get 570 or so miles...  my trucks older but its way lighter than a newer truck...My truck is 5100 lbs...  the new version with no options (comparable to my 70's scottdale_)  weighs in at around 6700 lbs.  thos stiffer frames and better this and that and emissions and safety stuff add up. 

I trust the 1/8 tank in my other tank better than what the dash display says.  and either way if it fails on me, I can flip a switch and be on my way... when your computer fails you one day you're stuck....
