454 project
« on: July 13, 2007, 05:46:34 PM »
I took my GMC out for a rip and it's ticking on the rh bank. Hopefully it's just a rocker arm adjustment but you could feel it too. If I find anything worse I'm gonna pull the whole engine out and repaint my engine compartment along with the engine. I'll post pix later if I find anything catastrophic (sp)

that stinks.  Hopefully it is just a rocker nut backing off.

#2 Intake was the ticker. I adjusted the lash quite a bit which make me suspect the lifter is starting to go bye bye or the cam is losing a lobe. It's oiling so I'm gonna change the oil but I have to wait to run it til I get some new VC gaskets on Monday. Hopefully it'll be ok cuz I don't have the time to rip this thing apart right now...

Is it a solid cam?  I have had my 454 do that after sitting for a while with those jam nuts, but it was solid.

I just read the other day that those jam nuts might back off if the stud is irregular and the nut does not solidly seat. It was in the "How To Build Max Performance Chevy Rat Motors" By Ed Staffel c1996 page 117.

Good Luck.

Well I just went out in my garage and turned on the furnace. Came back out it musta been 80° in there! ;D God I love my garage! Anyway I pulled the VC's back off and popped the intake and valley pan off. I took a closer look at #2 intake while rotating the crank and sure enough the lifter and the cam lobe are smoked. I knew it because this isn't the 1st Edelbrock cam I've had fail so use heavy zinc oils people. So anyway I proceeded to rip everything out and am going to go through the engine again and give it a nice new make over.

LOL

The motor is out and on the stand and ready for it's 10 year makeover. Just the cam and lifters I bought were about $650 bucks..  :o

I decided to ditch the factory AC BOX and try one of those delete boxes rather than spend time fabricating one since I have so much going on. I'm working on getting the engine compartment looking real nice again so I can plop that pup back in there. After that it's time to start chopping the rear suspension! I'll post pix of the engine build and everything else when I have some good progress...

Sux on the lifter and cam.
Looking forward on the pics.

The motor was 10 years old before this happened?

I bought the truck and it had the original 454 in it. I pulled it out and put in a built 350 that was to take it's place while I built the BB. After I built the 454 I put it back in and have been tearing it up with it ever since. Lately I have been averaging about 300 miles a year with it. The constant sitting and lack of good quality oils is what did it in I believe. I am also retrofitting to a roller cam and lifters this time around.

that's cool that you are adding the roller cam/rockers.  should help longevity and give ya a little more power out of that beast!  on a side note, got any good pics of the whole GMC?  sounds like quite the little street rod
