Title: Electric Fans?
Post by: 197 on December 19, 2006, 04:58:00 PM
How hard would it be to use electric fans insted of my normal engine powered fan on my 1973 c20 454? Is there any disadvantages or advantages. And links to any kits would be helpful.

How hard depends on how skilled you are. Yes there are definitely advantages. Just make sure you size it up properly for adequate cooling.

The main advantage is the drag on the crankshaft from the fan is gone. Just shop around. Look at like Summit for example and get a kit with a thermistor so you can just wire it up to come on when it gets hot. You can also wire it up with a relay and a resistor to have it run at low speed and have the switch run high current through the relay for high speed. It's pretty easy to do if you know anything about electrical or you can buy a kit.

You can find a kit just for our 73-87 year model trucks actually.

There's a $600 dual elec. fan conversion that JEGS has in their catalog.  Says that it bolts in place of the original shroud.  It has the relays and everything needed to swap over.

I was just about to post a question about it here to see if anybody had ever used it / results / input????

Any electric fan conversion I've done has been through a doner fan and doner parts. Cost = $0.00

Yeah, I am thinking that $600 for dual fans sounds absurd.

I think I will just try to find a dual fan setup like my Iroc-Z used or something similar.

I used an electric fan from a Cronw Vic in my 79 for about a year untill I built my new engine and it worked great. The truck never ran hot or anything. I was running a 400 sbc and never had any problems. It was really easy to do.
