Setting Idle Mixture on a 305 with an Eddie 1406
« on: July 19, 2017, 11:11:45 AM »
Been awhile since I posted but anyways just the other day I put a new Edelbrock 1406 on Rusty, that 305 is running much happier but I have no idea how to properly set the idle mixture screws. I did indeed watch the vid they give you and set it best I could by ear by screwing in the driver side screw in till the rpms dropped then screwing it out about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns then repeated on the second screw.

Also the idle is high even though I have the main idle speed screw all the way out and its not the choke ether, I adjusted the high idle screw already and it isn't whats causing the high idle.

Rusty is running real sweet although the 305 doesn't have as much gumption as it did with the 1411 but that was to be expected, hoping someone out there knows how to set the mixture right and possibly help with this idle problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Recheck your instructions. It's not 1/2 1/4 after it's idling smooth ...That's approx amount from totally closed.

High idle could be from a vac leak/hose or open vac port. Make sure all the throttle plates are completely closed.
Too much air entering somewhere to start with.

I'll check for vac leaks, last I checked I had them all sorted with the 1411 which idled fine. So wait how am I supposed to set the idle mixture screws? From what I read in the booklet that comes with it you turn them down till the idle gets rough then turn them up about 1 to 1 1/2 turns till it smooths out then do the same on the other side.

Fully warmed up choke fully open.

If you have a vac gauge back out the screws one at a time for the most vac.
If No vac gauge the just back out a little

Then back in slowly for a slight rpm drop, then back out 1/2 to 1 turn one at a time and then repeat.

U want the leanest setting with the best idle.
