Chevrolet off road conversion
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:05:00 AM »
Since I now have a ford pickup to use as a daily driver, I have decided to do some work on my 1978 K-10 shorty to make it a decent off-road/hunting rig.  First, I did away with the 3.07 govlock rearend... which is in the sale area.  Well, I will first say what she had when I bought her last year.
Engine: 327ci, 0.030" over, crane 305 or 306 cam.
Trans: GM TH350 rebuilt w/ B&M shift kit
T-case: NP203 with a part time kit installed
Rearend: GM 12 bolt 3.07 ratio govlock
Front end: Dana 44 3.07 ratio... supposed to be a posi, but I doubt it.
Cooling: GM 3 row thin radiator

The truck currently has
Engine: 350ci 4 bolt main, std bore, true flat-top pistons, moly rings, HV pump, forged GM crank, 53cc ported/polished heads, Melling MTC-1 camshaft(422/444 lift, 204/214 duration, 110 lobe sep) Holley Street Dom. intake, Edelbrock 600 carb, Sealed power Rods/mains(getting replaced soon due to bad fuel pump and thus, gas in oil... NOT PLEASED|I  )

Trans: same as above
T-case: same as above
Rearend: GM 12 bolt with new axles, new Eaton locking differential, richmond 4.10 ring and pinion
Front end: Same as before, soon to be GM 10 bolt with posi differential, new axles, new joints(all), new brakes.
radiator: GM 2 5/8" thick 4 row.

The truck has a rollbar(weld together, not bolt), grille guard, new hood, and a new bedfloor waiting to be installed.  The tires are Wild Spirit Radial RVT 33x12.50x15LT's on 15x8 ralley's.(soon to be replaced by dad's old 15x10 mag wheels).

I think that the cam is a little weak for the gears, any sugestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

I just installed a front bumper made from 10" house I-beam and 1.75" square tubing.  I have also found a rust free 1980 A/C 4x4 cab for the truck.  I am going to try to get it, ut I am curious as to what I need body bushings for, the cab or the frame.

Thank you for the info.  The man who owns the cab said that I could either pay him $100.00 for it or scuff the underside of his '57 chevy 4 door and help him run the fuel lines in it and take the cab as payment.  I happily chose to do the work, not to save the money, but rather because I wanted to work on the car.

Figuring that I will stay with my 350 engine due to a lack of space right now, I will just work around it.  I have a very good chance of getting a 1989 Chevrolet 4x4 haf ton for free.  It caught on fire.  How hard would it be to install the transmission and transfer case in my 78?
