The right is the crankcase breather:
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/gmc,1984,c1500+pickup,5.0l+305cid+v8,1143302,exhaust+&+emission,crankcase+breather+element,4932
The left is for the thermostatic air cleaner system and not sure it's available new anymore.
Make sure the parts fit your year, I didn't use 1978 but 1984 and c1500 with a 305.

Thank you TexasRed. I found the breather and will order. Does the thermostatic air cleaner ever go bad? This one, if original would be 40+ years old.

Maybe, not sure. A lot of times they hit the trash can for a lot of vehicles. Apparently you can still find the part, this may be it here: 1968-1979 GM Air Cleaner Air Inlet Thermal Vacuum Sensor, plug that into google. It's available from a few sources. Not sure if it'll fit your application.

WOW!!! How did you find that!!!! (Air Cleaner Air Inlet Thermal Vacuum Sensor). I have looked in every parts book I have, the official service manual, and the GM/Chevrolet parts dvd and couldn't find it. I don't know if this one is bad, but I am going to order one to have on hand.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

So, TexasRed, here is my next stupid question. Is there are right and wrong way to reinstall the temp sensor? My air filter housing was kicked and it dislodged the temp sensor. I thought it was somehow adhered in place - apparently I was wrong.
Thanks

Should be or should have been a clip on the underside of the aircleaner. Some of the photos on google show the part coming with the clip.
I think I may have gotten the last one years ago from rockauto. I remember it being a closeout item and it coming from Sugarland (that's where a lot of the discontinued items go).

Ok, thanks I do have the clip. I am wondering if there is a right and wrong way to attach the hoses to the sensor connection points - does it matter which hose is attached to a connection point?

I don't believe it matters. It opens when it senses air temperature is too low and allows vacuum to the little flapper in the air cleaner to pull heat off the exhaust manifold. I wouldn't see why it would matter because it should just shut off connection between the two ports when the temperature is high enough.
