Steering wheel 90° off..
« on: September 03, 2017, 02:05:08 AM »
Going straight on the road, my steering wheel is about 90 degrees off. Is there an easy way to fix this? Steering wheel can't just be rotated on the splines. Horn crap in the way. Are the tie rods my only option or is there something in like the steering shaft or similar to losen and shift?

you are correct, with the locking mechanism.  Something is wrong, have a shop figure out why it is off so much.

Short answer is yes, tie rod ends are easy fix. But what did you do? Did you replace the pitman arm? Did you replace the steering gear box and center it correctly? Rag joint? Anything you messed with under there could have messed it up. I just went through all this yesterday on my C30, have to center everything when going back.

Disconnect the pitman arm, rotate the wheel all the way to the right and all the way to the left to find the center point. If it's correct then the issue is in the front end alignment. If it's incorrect then someone messed with the steering coupler or steering wheel position on the hub.

It's actually been "off" since I got the truck. I think the steering column was replaced and whatever happened probably happened then.

I forgot to mention my truck, lol. It's an 83 GMC C1500, 2WD. Like I said, I think the steering column was swapped. There are wiper controls on my turn signal that do nothing. That and the gear index thing has no needle or anything to show what gear it's in.

I'm tempted to just break the horn piece off and change rotate the steering wheel on the splines. Horn doesn't work anyway, I doubt I'd use it even if it did.

could be just the column is installed in the intermediate shaft wrong. it should be a c clamp on the shaft that secures it to the column and that could be fixed easy

After messing with the steering trying to figure it out, I figure out that I think the steering wheel was mounted wrong. I rotated it, pointing it upside down, then I disconnected the intermediate shaft from the column, rotated the wheel 180°, then reconnected them and it's all lined up XD
