Title: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: 69byrd on December 13, 2008, 03:35:24 PM
Hi guys hows it going.  I thought I would post some pics of my truck, I started working on it in the summer of 07 and got it where it is at by spring 08.  I tore it down to the bare frame and built it back up.  It has a 6/7 drop and 20" Billet Specialties on it.  It also has a GM Preformance 350 HO with a TCI 350 turbo.  I am currently welding up the holes that arent needed and I will be putting in some LED taillights after christmas.  Future plans include finish bodywork and paint it finish the interior and mabye a new set of 20" and 22" Coys.

Here is what I started with

Awesome work man!  I love those wheels/tires with that stance, don't change it a bit! :o  I like those guages too, I'm not real big on the white faced guages.

Nice work, what size wheel/offset and tire combo?

20x8 all the way around BS is 5" front tires 245/40/20 rear tires 275/45/20.  The back is not really wide enough that is why I want to get some more wheels.

Looks great but all your pics are so dark it's hard to make a lot of things out. Try changing your camera's settings and update more pics. Did you make your fan or buy it?

I bought the fans and shroud from summit.  It is dark in that shop it just doesnt have enough light in there.  If the sun ever comes back out I will get it out side and take some more pictures.

The taillights are gone I am going to put 10" LEDs in the stake pocket post beside the tailgate. Hopeing to do that in the next couple of weeks I will post pics. I defiantly want some fatter meats on the back thats the reason I want some new wheels.  As far as the mirrors I havent made my mind up I dont know if I want to put them on. Vile how wide are the rear wheels on Broadzillas truck I think that is about what I need. By the way her truck looks great!

I agree, those wheels are awesome. Id put a little taller tire( maybe an inch or so) ,and wider tire on the back. It would fill in the wheel well, and not cost as much as swapping the whole set. It looks killer with those wheels and the stance. The bigger tire would give it a more agressive "prostreet" look

Thanks guys! 1983stepside I lowered it in the front with 3" dropped spindles and 2" coil springs and I cut a half of a round out of the coils this gave me 6" of drop. In the rear it has a flip kit and 2" shackles for 7" of drop.  The next thing I am gonna do to the suspension is install a swaybar and get rid of the body roll. Other than the bodyroll the truck handles and rides great I have been very happy with it.

Post by: 1983stepside on December 17, 2008, 03:41:11 PM
wow thanks alot do you have a web site i can get a sway bar for mine as well i have 3 in coil spring for mine and a flip kit for the rear its not on yet cuz the frame isnt done but i just might put it on and then decide if i wanna lower it any more im putting 15x8 wheels in front and 15x10 in the rear so it may sit a lil lower any way cuz im not puting tall wheels 8) on thanks and keep up the good work and remember to post new pics when you get them 8)

With the 15s you will probably still have to put smaller tires on them to get it any lower without putting more drop in the suspension. The 20s on the front of my truck are the same overall height as the stock wheels and tires I took off of it. I also have low profile tires but they are as small as I will go, they still have a decent sidewall. I am probably going to get my swaybar from Summit or CPP(Classic Preformance Products).

I do like my wheels but they just aren't wide enough in the back. :( I may look into a bigger tire that would be alot cheaper than a new set of wheels.

Try something like THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-2-WHEEL-SPACER-WITH-STUDS-ALUMINUM-5-X-5-HUBS_W0QQitemZ290048020509QQcmdZViewItem) to help move the wheels out more in the back. Every 4x4 1/2 ton I build I put these on the back.

Cool idea, I never thought about that. I was wondering if I could get the rears out to match the front on my red truck, now I know. Thanks

It has been raining and nasty here the past few days so I done something I have been putting off, tucking my back bumper up close to the body. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I moved it in 2 1/4 inches I had to drill all new holes and trim the bottom lip of the frame and trim a little off of the inside bumper bracket. All in all I think it turned out pretty well. Here are a few pix the first is what I started out with and the rest is after I finished.

I was going to put my LED taillights in my stake pockets but after moving my bumper in I think I may put them between the tailgate and bumper since there is plenty of room and it would be less work. If I dont put them under the tailgate I am going to raise the bumper up because there is too much of a gap. What do you guys think taillights in the stake pockets or under the tailgate.

I decided to put my taillights in the stake pockets so today I moved the bumper up almost 2" closer to the tailgate. It turned in to a harder job than I expected. I thought all I would have to do was drill a couple of holes, I was wrong! Not only did I drill new holes I had to trim more off the brackets and notch the rear of the bed for the brackets so the bed would sit down. When I was finished it had a 3/8" gap I was very pleased  ;D Sorry about that one picture being dark I will get another tomorrow and repost it.

I would like to narrow both bumpers and rechrome them but I will proably leave them alone and use that money for something else right now. Maybe in the future I will do that. Heres a better picture of the rear.

Will your tailgate still drop down with no problems?

The bumper looks great.  I may have to do something like that with the one I just ordered.
Title: Re: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: 69byrd on December 30, 2008, 07:07:18 PM
The tailgate opens fine, just like always,it has plenty of room. You wouldn't want to bring it up no closer because it proably would not open.  I guess because it is rounded on the bottom it doesn't drop down and in like other tailgates.

Done a little work on the truck today. I cut out some sheet metal and capped off the ends of the bed rails. I think it really changes the way the back end looks. My cousin didnt even notice it when I told him something on the back was different. That is what I wanted to do. Here are a few pix.

Nice job on the back.  That's gotta go on my list now.  I also liked how your pic showed a nice close shot of the latch tabs for the tailgate shaved off.

Nice score on the seat and possibly the headliner and trim.  I just bought a factory replacement headliner and all the trim pieces new.  Free is always better.  Hopefully it won't be too hard to get that trim installed in our trucks that didn't come with it stock.

Thanks guys the tailgate is from MAR-K. It has the hidden latches and the cheek straps to hold it open. It has the handle on the inside and it all works like a regular tailgate. I still have a couple of small spots to weld and fill in where the latch used to be. Here is a couple of pix of the tailgate.

I'm so jealous of that engine bay.  That is the single most thing I want to clean up on the truck and don't know where to begin.  It's not easy for me to remove the engine and paint everything...I just don't have that kind of space and I need the truck as a daily.

Maybe one day or I can find a way to get around it with the engine installed?

Looks great.

Thanks! and you will get your engine bay done, if you are like me the truck isn't going anywhere. I was like you when I started this project there were two areas that I wanted to spend more time and money on and that was the engine bay and the bed(with it being a stepside). So just take your time and it will come together.

I'm with on that. I feel these trucks have more character than mini trucks. Don't get me wrong, i've seen some pretty nice minis that have been well done, just my opinion. ;D

Nice score on the seat it looks real nice are you sure you want to recover it the blue looks good. I could see your truck with a blues theme. Kinda like Kenny Wayne Sheperd's "Blue on Black"

My truck had a blue interior orginally, about those colors. I am going to do it in black, I know it will be hot but I think it will look cool 8) Black on Black or as AC/DC would say Back in Black  :D

Post by: 1983stepside on January 09, 2009, 02:48:06 PM
ya that would look cool to have all black, my stepper had a vinal blue bench seat with blue door panels, and dash pad, no headliner from the factory, its a bare bones work truck, it didnt even have power stering me and my dad put that on :D, but when i get that far i plan on geting a seat cover made its gonna be black acroos the top and down the center of seat, with blue under neath the black and beside it with a iron croos stitched in suede in the center of the black on the back rest, that will also be blue, and the blue will match the truck when painted. same with coor panels most will be black with the small tuck and roll by the handle blue. and no head liner i like it that way but probably once all thats done ill put one in cuz it will look weird with out one 8) but keep up the good work and keep us posted, o and 69byrd i have your truck as my pic on my desktop lol 8)

Thanks and I feel honored to be on your desktop. Not much going on I would just like to say I went for a fun ride this afternoon. I went by my cousins to shoot the breeze(and a little shine ;)) and when I left he wanted to see what my truck would do. So I got on it a little bit ok mabye a lot but anyway my 12 bolt peg leg rear diff hooked up pos and I left out sideways,it was all over the road until it hit second. I stayed in it until I was out of site I guess it spun 150 to 175 yards. Next time I do that I am gonna get a video but heres a pix of where it happened. Oyeah I'm gonna put in my taillights tomorrow so I should have some pix.

Here is where I left and it spun way past the second mailbox. Man it was fun ;D 8)

That is a sweet video! That is what I looked like, next time I do that I'm gonna get the wife to video it. A little update on the taillights I didn't get them finished, the heater in the shop went out and I couldn't handle the cold. I wanted to make an access on the back of the stake pockets so I had to take the fenders off to work on it. So it is a pretty big job, hope to get the heater fixed so mabye I'll have it done in a few days. I did get my seat swaped, I'll get a pic later.

Title: Re: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: HAULIN IT on February 11, 2009, 09:43:29 PM
Byrd, I know the picture is poor...Take a close look, what I did was lowered the perimeter of the bed. Look at the bottom of the step to rocker in your photo & then look at the one I did. The photo in 1983stepside's avatar (he posted in this post on page 2) is done this way, plus a bunch of lowering of coarse, but the step & rocker are lined up.
I did my fleetside this way in a weekend, it would seem to me that the stepside could work well. I allways thought the 4x4 stepside's should have a 2"-3" bodylift under just the cab.
Isn't it great to look at the "Before" picture...The thing looks like a 4 wheel drive! Back in the fall we were out in my truck & backed in beside a nice stock, restored 1/2 truck at a cruise. I said to my wife "Isn't it hard to believe that this truck was that high when we started?" She replied, "But that's a 4 wheel drive.".... It wasn't!   Lorne

Post by: choptop on February 11, 2009, 10:14:20 PM
Raise the step an inch or two and graft the lower section from a fleetside on it to match the body line. Thats what I plan on doing. I think it will make the truck look finished, and be subtle enough that it doesnt look added.
Title: Re: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: 69byrd on February 12, 2009, 06:57:34 AM
I like both of those ideas I haven't thought of either one but that is one thing I dont like about my truck, how the steps dont match the rockers. I think I will look into dropping the bed and see how it looks. I wish that picture was alittle clearer so I could really see if I want to try it.
Title: Re: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: HAULIN IT on February 12, 2009, 08:58:40 AM
Byrd, Here's what I did...Print out Two copies of that picture. Carefully cut out the bed, fender & bumper, but not the tire. drop it down & tape it together. The other picture is to fill in the garage in the background ;D I'm sure some of the guys with some "photochop-shop" ability could do it also, but I'm not that computer savvy.
I lowered mine 2" & really you have to know Chevy trucks to see it. Much more than that, it would start to be more work & inside the bed (grooves, ect.) would take away from the "correctness" of the look. The only thing I see with doing just the bed 3" or so is the back of the cab indentions would start to show. Look it over carefully & plan it out. Maybe lower the bed 2" & the fenders/steps 1" more? Of coarse you'll need to make altered rear bumper brackets. Have Fun! Lorne

Hey guys, whats going on? I done a mod on my truck that alot of people think is kinda pointless, but I think it is cool. I got my front bumper tucked in like my rear bumper. I move it in a little over an inch. It was not near as hard as I thought it would be. Now I just need to get both bumpers narrowed, bolt heads shaved and rechromed. Then I will have the bumpers the way I want them. Here are a few pics of it. Sorry I dont have any before pics.

tucking bumpers is so overlooked, im also tucking mine and narrowing it, the only thing im skeptical about is where to narrow, because if you do the center your licence plate wont fit, i really want a bumper without a place inlet, but that wont happen

im glad your doing this, its coming out good, and the marker lights are also a thing to do, those stock ones are huge!, what are you going to replace them with if at all?
Title: Re: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: 69byrd on May 22, 2009, 07:39:38 AM
I am not going to replace the marker lights with anything. As far as doing away with the licence plate area in the bumper you would have to use 2 bumpers. Cut the licence section out of one and replace it with a section from the other. I know a guy who just did this to the rear bumper on his truck and it looks great. If you keep the licence plate you have to cut a section out on both sides of it.

smoothed markers will deffinitely clean up the front end, though i have a set ive been dieing to put on my truck since i started getting into my project, they are off a 60's impala
Title: Re: 84 Stepside Chevy
Post by: oldwhity on May 23, 2009, 05:45:48 AM
You could also narrow the bumper in 1/3's. That way you woundn't need a donor bumper and retain the license plate section.

I thought it was a good score also, when the guy told me $40 for both over the phone I told him I was on the way ;D The power mirrors are gonna go, I dont care for them either.  As for the extra switches in the panel, I am thinking of running the one piece panels so thats not an issue. If I dont use the one piece panels I have access to some power panels out of a truck my friend has.

Great score. Have you priced GM doors at the dealer lately? They want $500 each and thats if they can find them. Personally, I love the look of the power mirrors on our trucks. Just keep in mind that if you ditch them you will have a few holes to fill in.
These doors also use different glass than those without power mirrors. You will notice that a section of the glass is blacked out to cover the mirror when the window is up.
I would imagine the mirror set up and the glass would be worth good $$ to someone looking to do the conversion.
Your truck is comming along great. Good luck with it.

Hey man i like that engine bracket, if you don't mind where ya get it from..

Are you talking about the billet bracket that holds the ac compressor and the alternator?  It is part of the Billet Specialties v-trac system.  You can get it from Billet Specialties, Summit,or Jegs.

As for the extra switches in the panel, I am thinking of running the one piece panels so thats not an issue. If I dont use the one piece panels I have access to some power panels out of a truck my friend has.

you could always use the extra switches for or manual fan control, or maybe nitrous?

By the way just found your build thread.  Love the truck and some of the ideas shared.  Thanks for sharing your build, I have a couple questions.  How wide a tire do you think you could fit under the rear?  I have 275's now and think I could go 295 but much wider I think I might start to rub.

Got my bed back from the media blaster today. I am happy with it. It has a few small dings and dents from where my uncle used the truck. Seeing how they are small I am going to leave them, they add character and he put them there. Its kinda like I am preserving part of him. I also started striping the cab today.

I got a little done on the interior. I painted all the exposed metal on the inside a satin black. I was also gonna cover the dash pad with vinal but I have found a dash pad with no cracks at the bone yard for $50. I am thinking about buying it and dyeing it black. Havent't made up my mind yet. What would you guys do?

I'd wrap the one you've got. I saw some pretty cool black flake vinyl (think 50's diner chairs) that would be cool, or black suede... just a thought or two.

Wrap the one you got and if you aren't satisfied with it buy the one from the boneyard. Just drive your truck there and tell him you spent all your money making that beauty and all you have left is $25 ;D

Guys I am sad to report that my truck has been involved in a self inflicted accident a few days ago :'( All is well with me and I have already started to repair the truck. All that was damaged was the pass door and the rear pass fender. I have another door in primer and ready for paint. Now I am waiting on a new rear fender and then all will be good again.

I was real lucky!  Some how the truck excaped the ordeal with no damage to the cab corner or the rocker panel.  Good doors are cheap around here so I aint gonna be out to much money.  Guess I am going to put a new windshield in it to while I am fixin things.

Bringing this topic back to life.  Wanted to say I enjoyed reading through all 16 pages of progress here.  It's given me some ideas for my 84 stepside.

I planned to do the satin black as well, so thanks for the link you posted.

Since you haven't posted this year, I'd like to think you got it all back together after the accident.  Any news or updates?  I'm also curious how the interior turned out.

I have been slacking and haven't posted in awhile, sorry about that.  All is well with the stepside, I have replaced all the damage and the new winshield is nice ;D.  I have been busy with projects around the house so the interior hasn't had any work done on it yet.  I am almost done with the home projects so I will post up some pics soon.

The other day I was over at my granddads house and I got the wiper arms off of his 75 GMC.  I polished them up and put some new wiper blades in them.  I got them on the truck today and they look pretty good on the new windshield.  Here are some new pics.

Hey guys I know it's been awhile since I posted anything. I haven't really done much to the truck other than drive it. I do have some new black carpet and new black factory style seat cover to go in as soon as this rain goes away. Anyway here's a few pics.

As most of you know this truck belonged to my uncle. He was an avid deer hunter and very good at it. There was many large bucks that got to take a ride in this truck. This year I killed a nice buck and in honor of my uncle I took the deer for a ride.

I finally got a day to put my carpet in and recover my seat. This was my first seat to cover. It came out pretty good. I got it all in the truck and it looks good. Next on the list is a black dash pad. Here are some cell phone pics. I will get some better pics when the sun comes out.

I too just found your post, although, today is my first day as a member, and may I say, an amazing looking truck, and I am so glad it was slow here at work, because for the past 2 hours i've read everypage on here.  I have an 87 Stepside R10, and I always wondered how the wood bed holds up, if you also want to use your truck bed for hauling stuff, once in a while.

Again thank you Byrd, for posting all your info and great ideas.

Thanks for the kind words. The oak that I put in the bed is very strong. I have hauled a few things since putting the bed in. Nothing bigger than a hood though. A friend of mine has a 87 that still has the wood from the factory. He hauls stuff all the time and some of it is heavy. I think if you take care of the wood it will hold up well.

Haven't posted in a while. Nothing really new with the truck. Just been racking up some miles and having fun with it. I am getting ready to go to the Rod Run in Pigeon Forge next week. So I refinished my bed floor last week. Now it is all nice and shiny again.

Been helping my friends work on their trucks. Putting a trans in the blue truck. Getting them ready for the southeastern truck nationals. I got a few things to do to mine and then we are ready to go.
