LOL, I've had many and have many. No that is not the truck with the phantom grille... that's the "Mutt". It's receiving my 74 bed as to keep all the 74's parts alive. I still want to build a stepside and acquire another full convertible blazer and then MAYBE I'll be satisfied. ;D

Well I had a long day yesterday. I had to deal with the snow storm after working all day but I had ants in my pants so last night at around 8:00 I decided to start. Let's just say I had a long night too LOL Here's some progress pix...

Measure it all out and start cutting! 14" section removed behind the cab and 6" removed from the back of the frame.

I lined up everything easier using turn/slip plates under the rear wheels so I could shift the frame around. Clamped and remeasured then I started to weld it up...

It got late so I was pooped and called it a night... One thing I did was I wanted to run the rest of the fuel out of the bowl so I ran it after I cut off the exhaust just to make some noise ;D

Looks great not that I'am surprised though. Are you going to weld a flat plate to the inside were you made the cut I think it kinda helps strengthen the section you cut and with that rat your pack'in any renforcement can't hurt.

I ground the exterior welds flat today so it's basically an invisible job. On the inside I made a boxed brace and a flat extra thick plate after the inside was welded. The brace connects on the top and bottom and on both parts of the frame that were cut. I also made a C-notch so I can pass through fuel/brake lines, wires, cables etc on both sides... I'm beat!

Please post the reinforced pics. I want to do the same with mine when I find an extended cab conversion but I want to keep the 8 ft. bed so I want to add to the wheelbase.

I dont think i could of done a better job welding that! Great job they look very clean with good penetration....I always admire great welds like that!

Thanks! I took pix last night but they came out so dark even if I lighten them up you can't really see anything so I'll have to take more later today. I'm pretty psyched about it.

Thanks! That's all I did this weekend was worked on this truck. I don't think I saw one human being lol
As far as welding I used my mig and arc welders. I took a few more pix, when I get a chance I'll upload them if they came out better. I started POR-15ing the frame too. I need to get new rear springs since one side is a 1/2" lower fatigued. I have to get a new parking brake intermediate cable, and get my driveshaft shortened. I also have to make a new bracket for the center bearing since I flipped the axle.

what tranny are you using, i have an swb c10 700r4 driveshaft if you need it.
i shortened mine by myself though, i have to run a 2 piece because i have a muncie (very short) and a long wheel base, so i got a 2 piece and it was too long, so i ground off the origional weld ring, cut the pipe to length, heated the pipe up and roze the knuckle and hammered it on and welded it..
came out good and supprisingly balenced,

It's a TH400. It's easy enough to shorten but balance is critical with this puppy so I'm gonna have it done since my buddy works at the place that does it.
At least it was sunny outside today for your engine swap!

Thanks Don, I have a new rear tank sitting in the shop but am contemplating what to do. The rear tank will interfere with the way I want my exhaust so I am now leaning towards a left hand 16 gallon tank.
On my way now to pick up my new rear springs!

Man, you did that all in one night??? It would take me the entire weekend just getting the gas tank out. Are you one of those guys who can just dive into something and figure it out as you go with minimial consequences or do you reasearch and plan out everything so you are prepared for everything? I guess you've worked on enough of these that nothing scares you but you make the frame work look way way too easy.

lol, it's only a vehicle have NO fear! I like things that will challenge me. I ran down to Hartford and got a set of new rear springs because I busted 3 leaves :D and I put them in right after work... I figure if I do a little bit every day I'll be rippin around w new paint in no time.

Replaced the springs the other day even though there will be a 4 link, I need to have it mobile until that point

I remember seeing what looked like extra hanger holes on a long bed frame but never really thought that's what they were for due to the front being too long anyway. Are you building a whole new bed? Thanks, I didn't move the hangers. The frame came out good. It's reinforced very well and you can't see any welds or cuts on the outside. I have a new bed all aftermarket, floor, sides, inners everything but all new steel nevertheless!

I just ordered the new roll pan and all the tailgate hinges and hardware. The handle will be on the inside of the gate. I was going to smooth the taillights but decided not too. I want to keep it more old school in that respect with a little modern twist.

Money isn't the issue at this point. I've been dumping mad cash into this thing since I bought it lol
I wanted new metal and a fresh start. Aside from getting a few dented up parts that had to be returned I'm happy with the quality so far. We'll see when I start assembling the bed how everything comes together.

Progress.... Cab mounts are in but not tightened down yet until I get the bed squared up to it. Got the fuel tank all mocked up and drilled the holes in the frame. Then I started putting the bed together of course none of the holes lined up so I had to elongate every single hole. Then I used por-15 on all of the joints (that got a lil messy) lol I ended up getting the front panel and the whole left side together. I'm taking today off and giving myself a much needed break. This week hopefully I'll get the right side all together and get everything squared up. It won't be tomorrow though since I'm going to go buy another truck! LOL

vile how about a 15 gallon fuel cell? any chance on fitting something custom? i think ill be making like a 14 or 15 gallon cell to fit my dementions out of aluminum

I decided against the fuel cell because I really like the way my exhaust works and a rear tank would just make it impossible. The 16 gallon tank will be in by the end of the week. I'm leaving the left side out so I can mount the battery on that side. I took a few pix b4 I left but they came out like crap for some reason... I'll post anyway....

I just picked up my new driveshaft I had made today. I'm gonna put it in tomorrow. I got the exhaust welded back up and now I just have to square the bed for the tailgate and I'll be on the home stretch!

The guy that built the driveshaft built me the most heavy duty that would fit so it is mega beefy. I just hope it clears my H pipe or I'll be doing more cutting and welding!

K I got my new driveshaft but the U-joints didn't match up to the old pinion Yoke on the 12 Bolt rear end. So I had to get a conversion U-joint, 10 bolt pinion yoke, and pinion seal to match. I decided to take a pic with part #'s since I know other people seem to run into this a lot.

I have decided I am going to fill the tail lights and smooth the gate. I am going with a 4 louvered tailgate with small billet lights in the pan. I am going to remove the cab light and drip rails and smoothing the cab seam. I still haven't made up my mind about the locks and handles. I am keeping the same style mirrors on there now. I'll be ditching the 454 fender emblems. I don't like the front roll pans on 73-80 noses so I am going to keep a chrome bumper on the front. So please feel free to throw some ideas my way if you like.
No HEI in this truck lol :D

Vile, I don't understand the rear yoke problem. Did they make the driveshaft with the wrong end? Is the u-joint now bigger/smaller than before or just the cross? I changed my 10 bolt for a 12 bolt about 8 years ago & remember getting a different u-joint, why weren't you able to just change the joint? Thanks, Lorne

Because the 12 bolt actually has a smaller u-joint cap than the 10 bolt cap. The driveshaft being a big beefer has the 1 ton u joint caps. They didn't make a conversion joint that went from the large cap to the small cap. That's why I swapped yokes and pinion seals so I could use the 21153 conversion joint.

Ok, I see, you planed to use a bigger joint (1-ton)when you had the shaft made, but really were going down 2 sizes on the caps to match up with the 12 bolt, correct? I didn't remember why the different joint, but remember I had bought a new one before hand thinking I would change it while it was out & having to go get a different one to finish the job. So really I could have just changed yokes (& seal) & kept the bigger caps, is this correct? I've always questioned the strength of the necked down spline area of those shafts, do you think it is as strong as a regular slide in yoke driveshaft? Personal experience, but I wouldn't shave the handles if you plan to drive it a lot, and if you are keeping the mirrors, you might as well keep the handles and locks to.

Awesome job, Vile 8) So what part of it so far was the most difficult? Anything give you fits or headaches? I know you already said not one bolt hole lined up with the new bed body pieces. That'd be enough to drive me crazy, but I guess when you go into figuring everything you have to do is going to require some custom work, then it's not so bad when you run into problems.
As for tail treatment, a long thin continuous slot in the rear pan would look nice with smoked plexi for a lens but I guess to be legal you need some kind of DOT-approved reflector and lens. Caddy LED tails turned sideways? They might have an arc to them though, but frenching them could look cool.

Vile, that looks great I like the idea of the smooth tailgate I did that to mine it has went from plain to puting in the alum. trim piece to ton light across the back to now fliped handle and smoothed. I guess over the years I've changed it several times, kinda like the front round tube grille to stock, then square tube to billit to rv conversion thats one thing I like about these trucks very versatile.

I would put a rear roll pan on my truck as well, but I'm afraid right after I do that I'll get rear ended by somebody. :(
Maybe if I had a SWB truck I would do it. I think it would look great on your truck Vile.

I changed the yokes because of the beefier driveshaft. The one ton yoke won't fit on the 12 bolt but the 10 and 12 bolt share the same pinion spline. So the conversion joint was the wisest choice. Hope that answered your ?

The lights on the left in the roll pan next to the louver... It hought about making some custom lights but I sketched it out on paper and like what I see. I am going with the louvered roll pan because the truck has always had a louvered gate and I just want some resemblence to the way I had it....

I am not going to be driving it a lot but I definitely am keeping the same style mirror. I just think they keep the truck looking like a truck. When the mirrors are gone to me they look funny head on. The cab seam, drip rails, and cargo light are history.

When I took the roll pan off and put the bumper on it I get rear ended by an SNET Boom truck! Thank God I had the bumper back on. For a daily driver I'd opt for the bumper over the roll pan.
Lotsa little headaches....the alignment of bolt holes is pathetic. If anyone decides to buy all new metal just elongate every single hole ahead of time or you will be taking parts on and off repeatedly.
I still need to get a parking brake intermediate cable. None of my parts vendors list one for a swb.

Truck looks good Vile..you were just thinking about the conversion last time I checked in over here .. it's all easy after you make that first cut ;D..I do like the way you did that stagger cut on the frame,if I'd had my plasma at the time I did mine,probably would have done it the same way..

Thanks... I've been waiting for the new tailgate since the gates I have don't fit well. I decided to go with an 81-87 gate. I have one 73-76 gate and 2 77-80 gates but they don't fit or work as nice. Now trying to square up the bed in the back and weld the corners in place. After this weekend I should be well on my way to starting the body prep work for the new paint job. My roll pan and other parts I ordered from Mar-K still haven't shown up yet

I'm doing all the tedious body work stuff to #1 get it the way I want it and #2 to save some coin. I want this to be the last paint job I put on this truck so I want it MINT. Especially because it's gonna be black. The handle flip I got from Mar-K and I forget how much it was.

I hear ya on the Louvres, but it gives you an idea to work with if interested.... As for the Tails, Personally I have always wanted to do a stealth set up on a pickup, and if I had gotten that Chopped SWB Fleet a few years back, I would have used something like these

I was thinking of making my own lights. I like the look of the caddilac tails loudnlow did.... I've scoured the internet looking for anything but I only found one truck with totally custom tails and they weren't completed :-\ All ideas are welcomed...

What about some '67 Camaro RS tail lights with bezels in the roll pan? Nice and rectangular, should match the body nicely. Personally I would save all the LED stuff for the late models.

How bout the long skinny caddy taillight then french a 3rd brake light across the top of the tailgate like the caddilac where you don't see it til it lights up. or the other truck I have has the ZR-1 taillights in the rollpan they don't look to bad either.

My tail light fillers, roll pan and lights showed up today. I decided to go with some custom cadillac tail lights and ordered them too. That'll keep me busy for a little while. ;D

That's ok you can keep the posts~ For the lights I will start another thread if you all would like. Tomorrow is the day I decide exactly what I am gonna do. Saturday I plan on installing the roll pan and filling in the stake pockets on the bed.

What do you do to fill in the stake pocket holes? Is there a plug or a piece that you fit over the hole and weld?

Did you run into anything unusual in putting on the rear roll pan? I still have to do this. I know about the bed notching.

Just notching the bed if you plan on running a roll pan with the license plate box aside from that, I would weld it in as a permanent piece.
For the stake pockets I actually used the piece I notched the bed floor with and filled the pockets using that metal. I'll post more pix later.

Hey Vile, I know a lot of people on this forum told ya how much they are loving your truck, but I gotta say, thatīs nothing, Iīm saying I really really love your truck, itīs just great, I bought an 80 short, a couple of years back, started work on it , till I found the chassis was cracked and bend in so many spots, that I couldīn believe how in the world was running, I was actually thinking of junk my truck, cause I thought it would take a lot of years and money to put that thing straight; BUT untill I read this whole process of yours, you really inspired me, Iīm saying for real!
Iīm obviously replacing the chassis....
By the way, you used 3Ļflowmasters, but never said what kind, are those super 44īs?

The flowmasters I put on there are the old big block 2 chambers. I don't think they sell them anymore. ???
For your truck if the frame is tweaked real bad it might not be a bad idea to look for a junker with a nice frame and just swap everything over. These trucks are getting more scarce and a lot of them are getting crushed so start looking now and good luck with your build!

Gonna look good I think. But if you haven't already started cutting, may I suggest that you lower the position of the lights maybe an inch or so and see what you think.

I agree that it would look the best if measured from the top ledge to the bottom ledge and offset it to the middle, BUT, there is a body ledge that would have to be addressed that sinks in (where the rollpan is)

Vile, Just my opinion. I feel those lights are a little long for the area you have to work with. The body line above & below the original light hole seems to dictate the length of the light. Won't they have to be recessed quite a bit in the middle to be flush at the top edge? It's only steel, nothing that can't be changed with a welder if you don't like it at some point. I have seen long thin lights like that (Caddy?) adapted on vehicles before & do like the style, I'm just not sure with the curves of the body. Just my two cents, Carry on! Lorne

The tail lights can really go any further down or they would be so far sunken in and the bedside would be so hacked up there'd never be a turning back point. The lights sit recessed behind the buckets themselves and have to actually fit inside the panel etc so that's basically as low as they'll go. I saw a guy with an orange truck like this the other day and I really liked the look of it. Different but slick. I think I'm gonna do it.

It'd be a heck of a lot easier in the roll pan I'll tell you that. Those pix were taken with a crappy camera because I forgot mine and I didn't do any body work yet it's just welded in there. I still have to do the right side and then wire it all up. After that I need to adjust my valves and then over to the body shop for the finish work and paint. :D

That is why I opted to sell my 72 Chevelle. Bodywork was done for the most part but the paintjob to do it justice was $4500. My 86 will get a Pole Barn paint job with a single stage when it is ready to go. Wet sand and buff the dirt and she'll be good to go. A good friend of mine does excellent body work but doesn't have a place to paint. Pictured is what I will be starting on in a few weeks, not much wrong with the body at all.

It works well on the stepsides but those Caddy lights just seem to fit perfectly on the fleetsides like Vilezambonie's truck- they look great. Hope you find a painter soon Vile. Can't wait for the finished product.

Cool International truck tail light job on the step side. I'm trying to come up with something cool for my wooden flatbed shorty. I want a step side bed for it but think outfitting the flatbed with aluminum diamond plate tool boxes I already have will help keep my stuff secure when going to the race track. Plus I'm going to do an air tank and stuff like that so the wooden flatbed it is. Only coolified! Hopefully!!!!!!!!! I was thinking some old round Falcon taillights recessed in the wood. We'll see.

Vile, I sure hope you don't end up with a painter like I did took him 17 months and he never actually finished it the way I wanted it I was going to two tone it but I was happy to at least get it back all one color I put brand new GM fenders just to have new ones so not much work there my doors are still the originals with no rust and no door dings so no work there replaced both bedsides my other ones were ok just got a good deal on new ones so we put them on and filled my tailgate with a skin and changed to a steel cowl hood can't imagine what the heck would take that long and top it off cost me about $8,000.00 to not even finish it. So good luck to ya you might be better off finishing it yourself at least if it would have a flaw just you to blam you didn't have to pay someone to screw it up.

$12k??? From a friend? :o Wow, and you don't have any body repairs persay right? So basically block-sanding and some skim coats for straightness and then color? That price is stiff for sure. You could try doing the blocking yourself and primer it. Then take it to someone for finish sanding and color. More work for you though for sure.
Body shops make me real nervous, since it's so incredibly labor-intensive and boils down to experience and skill of the body man.
Oh, a money saver you could do if you aren't already is doing a spray-in bedliner. Spares a bunch of time and labor prepping, painting and buffing the box floor and bed sides. I'm sure body guys hate doing that corrugated floor.

I terrorized my neighborhood but didn't have anyone to film it while I did it but I can assure you I will. That thing sounds MEAN. Doing work to the pink one, some interior work and whatnot. Gotta do some fine tuning but had it out the other day. Everyone loves that thing, it's fun to drive I must say.

love the tail lights and that thing sounds so good i got 3in flows but mine aint that loud cause i got small pipes but mines ran the same way but im about to throw in a 350 bored .30 over with a big ole cam and gear drive and i got a set of 3in headers at the collectors and im gonna run 3in to the back axel with the flows and put turn downs

I got the bed sides from another online source that sells them. They fit good but all of the holes needed to be elongated to install the bolts. If you do replace yours with new ones my suggestion is to elongate all of the holes first. Save you a headache...

I have the 3.73's back in there now. I found my two rear slots probably 14 years ago for $50 bucks and the fronts at a swap meet. Too bad they don't make a 10" wide repro but that makes these wheels cooler I think. Also keep an eye on eBay.

i put an ATI t350 reverse manual behind a 500+hp 383 stroker (built) with a 3000 TS converter... i still need to buy another set of tires... drag radials.... i think between 26-28" tall???. (just to let you know I am not driveing highway much... just the drag strip and cruising around town)...(also ordering in an auborn posi) ... one wheel wonder just not cutting it...lol
(last summer i put a 700r4 "beefed up" tranny in and it only lasted 3 days so i switched to a well known name trans)... thanks

Hi I was just wondering if you had to drill new holes for the shortbed to be attached, do you remember roughly how much you cut out I just want to make sure Im in the same ballpark with mine. It says the frame differences is 14 inchs but the diagrams I found it only says there's a difference of ten?

14" behind the cab and 6" off of the back. You'll want to drill and elongate holes for the bed floor so you have room to play. You'll have to drill holes for the fuel tank brackets too.

Man, what a wealth of info in this thread. I'm starting a short bed conversion this weekend, actually taking the short bed to the bodyshop tomorrow. I am cutting down a 1991 Crew Cab 4x4 and installing a shortbed. The truck has a 4" lift and 35's, I am going to do the Blazer/Burb tank also, and complete repaint. I'll take pics.

You'll have to drill new holes in the back. I elongated mine too to bring the bed in closer to the cab.

The whole bed is aftermarket except for the gate. As far as updates, hopefully I'll have some progress pix worth postin within the next 2 weeks. Just did some skim coating and sanding on the bed. I've been teaching day and night so not much time :(

Depends on which pix you are going by. Originally I had just spindles and shackles. I put the stock style shackles back in and did an axle flip, front lowering spindles and lowered springs. My tire sizes are different too.

Making the cut does not sound difficult, it's welding it back together that takes the skill.

Agreed, make sure everything is square. I put my rear axle on turn/slip plates to allow me to get it as close as possible.

i created marks on the rails to measure from. took it to the frame shop yesterday and had them verify it. it was dang straight!

Nice work. Will be doing somethin very similar to my 85 soon ive never done auto body but i own a welding business and it doesnt look too difficult. Ive done a lot of research on conversions and your thread is by far the most helpful. Love the truck. Very nice. And nice welding too

I just shortened a lwb frame to a swb for my 83 that had major frame damage. This job is a lot easier than u think.

Yes all new aftermarket except the tailgate i am using is a GM gate. I did use an aftermarket to make into a smooth gate originally but that's for something else now. Having all new metal is nice but to get factory or better fitment requires work. Sometimes LOTS of work but at least you know what you've got. Definitely pros and cons to both used and new. I lost track of the thousands I put into my trucks. i don't count anymore lol

I actually sold a long bed to make way for the new parts. The bed looks spectacular now, I love having a nice new bed floor too that isn't pulverized. It would suck to do all of that work and not be happy with the outcome, so it's all in your level of skill and patience.
