Title: 1987 R10 Driver
Post by: Captkaos on May 06, 2009, 12:25:14 AM
I hadn't posted anything about my daily driver but this is what is looks like now, I will update the post with some before after pics later.  This truck will eventually evolve into the "website" truck with tan/red paint and the products we sell.

Friday March 28th 2009:Mounted the Impala SS wheels on.

Showing this one some love finally...
Sunday April 17th 2011:The repaint on the roof was a poor job and over the course of the past 5.5 years since I got it, the paint has been slowly pealing back to where now its at the point were it needs to come off and be repainted.  The rust had gotten out of hand and this truck was to be painted this year but the Blazer got first in line.  The first pic is the best I have of the roof on the day I got it.

So I spent the afternoon sanding it down to remove some surface rust and to put some rust mort on it.  I plan to spray can it with some sealer primer and some paint to make it look somewhat better.

Saturday Jul 2nd 2011: Replaced the cap/rotor on the truck, was running so bad it couldn't pull a hill, but noticed an exhaust leak (haven't driven it in a while...

Sunday Jul 10th 2011: Picked up some freon so I could charge the AC on the R10.  After Vacc'ing it down and charging it found the compressor was bad.  Started pulling the compressor off and when unbolting the adjusting nut for the PS pump noticed the O2 sensor was broke in half and hanging down under the truck, removed it from the truck also.

Sunday Jul 11th 2011: picked up a new compress or and O2 sensor and installed back on the truck.

Saturday Jul 16th 2011:  Charged the AC on the R10,  Ahhhh, much cooler.

Sunday Jul 17th 2011: It was going to well, AC belt shredded...

Monday Jul 18th 2011: picked up and new AC belt, back in business.

Friday, Sept 16th, 2011:  The 700R4 trans is about to give up on me.  Trans fluid is all burnt now and didn't think I would make it home.  It is now restricted to moving around the yard.  Planning out what it will take to get the 6.0L/4L80E that is destined for it and the related parts ready to put it in...

Friday, Dec 30th, 2011: Time has come to say good-bye to the 305 in the Daily...
Today I started tearing it down to remove the engine/trans.

Removed the (3) 15mm Adjusting bolts on the compressor, the 15mm pivot bolt and set the AC compressor aside.  Disconnected the  upper radiator hose (flathead Screwdriver) and removed the fan (1/2" wrench)

Remove 14mm pivot power steering bolt, 15mm and 9/16" adjustment bolts and set the power steering box aside.

Removed Air cleaner, heater (crescent wrench and Razor blade) and vac/booster hoses (5/8"), spark plug wires and labelled connectors for the wiring.

Removed TBI (13mm) Throttle cable, TV cable, distributor (9/16"), coil (13mm), Fuel lines (5/8" line and 3/4").

Didn't have any sawzall blades to cut the exhaust off (not using) so had to call it a night.  Did go pick up some blades for tomorrow..

When the LS gets ready to go in, I am going to start a project post for it.  It isn't going to be polished up, painted etc.  I am going to drop it in and go just like it is..

No, it is a Blazer tank.  It isn't going to make it on this round, need it running...

Updates coming but the engine and trans is in the truck,  just been real busy..

Sunday, Jan 1st, 2012:  Had to make a parts run to get the 6.0L, 4L80E, an associated parts that were mocked up in the other truck.  Drove back home and got to work.

Set off the Truck, hooked it up to the hoist and..

Dropped it in.

I am using S&P plate adapters and the original motor mounts for the 81-87's.  It sat right back in place with a slight amount of maneuvering.

Friday, Jan 6th, 2012: Removed the crossmember to get the trans in, dropped the drivers side exhaust to get the trans in. Tools: 5/8 wrench, 1/2, 11/16 ratchet

Before I started I realized I needed to snake the old trans lines back into the truck.

Most Headers have issues with the tab on the 4L80E, so I removed it.  Then positioned the Trans to go under the truck (it is NOT lifted, it is sitting on all 4 tires.)

Lifted the Transmission up on the Jack with help from a friend, loaded the torque converter and spun it until it seated, jacked it into position (had to use the engine lift to level it out) put all the transmission bolts in (15mm).

Since it was getting late and it was expected to rain I went ahead and bolted the crossmember (5/8" and 11/16" wrench) in place to hold the trans up.  and to get an idea of how far the crossmember will need to be moved rearward some.

This is how far off the transmission crossmember is off from bolting up.

Monday, Jan 9th, 2012: Ordered headers from Street & Performance (http://hotrodlane.cc) (the only company that currently makes a header to clear the 4L80E.  Asked them to add V-clamps to them.  Expected delivery is 2 weeks.

Also order -6 AN braided Fuel line, 14mm/16mm O-ring to -6AN adapters to connect to the existing fuel and return lines on the truck and GM quick connect to -6AN adapters for the Intake lines from Pure Choice Performance (http://www.purechoicemotorsports.com).

I also ordered a High mount AC bracket set (bracket only) from Novak Conversions (http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/air_conditioning/g3_relocation_kit.htm)

Sunday, Jan 15th, 2012:   Novak AC kit came in on Friday.  Sunday evening, got started installing it.  One hole on the waterpump has to be removed and countersunk to miss the new orientation of the idler arm.  Also on some models the idler arm has to be clearanced of the ribs on the back to clear the new swing and a new billet pulley is installed

Installed the new rear bracket to the head (5/16" Allen). you can see the countersuck bolt here also, and I ground some of the casting numbers off the water pump.

Monday, Jan 16th, 2012: Removed the old 305 AC lines and "borrowed" the serpentine setup from the Blazer I am working on.  Note the differences, Serpenting mounts on the passenger side just like the Novak setup.  Blazer serp setup on Left,
V-belt setup on right.

Installed the idler pulley 180 degrees to it original orientation and loosely installed the front mount
(http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/87R10-Driver/Novak2.jpg)

Dropped in the AC compressor and tightened it up (15mm):

Novak includes the correctly sized belt for the kit and I put it on (15mm)

Yeah, I had MOST of it planned out.  I am pretty motivated to get it going and I would LOVE to have it done before Feb 27th (my birthday).  That is my current goal.  I mocked all of this up serveral years ago before my daughter was born and it took a back seat.  When the trans went out I planned to dump the TBI and move to LS power.

Saturday, January 28th, 2012: Attempted to install the headers and they ended up not fitting, passenger side wouldn't go between the frame rails, driver side hit the bell flange.

Sunday, January 29th, 2012: Got up removed the drivers side header, and bolted a set of 07 exhaust manifolds to verify they fit, just in case (13mm).  Then proceeded to drop the drivers side tank (9/16", 1/2" -frame to tank, flat and phillips screwdriver, 10mm fuel neck ground).  Once I got it on the ground and installed the fuel pump in the tank I decided to pull the rear bumper (3/4") and the bed off. (3/4", 1/2" -diff vent, torx and phillips on tail light lense).  Plan is to go ahead and drop both tanks and install the Blazer tank in its place.

Guys are saying the 88 schoenfeld swap headers fit with some frame clearancing, they're pretty reasonable. Just sold a guy a set of 2010 camaro long tubes cause he said he read they work, I hadn't seen that before, but from installing them on a few camaros they are a pretty basic design.

I need 3/4 for the Turbos and really like the V-band clamps.  Elcamino LS conversion Long tubes work also.  FlamingC10 is using them in his conversion.

My wiring for the ECM should be simple, I bought a painless kit 6 years ago..  Plug and play, the truck wiring should be easy on the firewall side it just need alternator, starter and AC basically.  The Dakota Analog setup should be easy also.

Sunday, February 5th, 2012: Dropped the passenger side tank. (9/16, 1/2 and flat screwdriver).  Removed the spare tire hanger from the truck (13/16", 7/8").  Pulled out the grinder with a cutoff wheel and removed the rivets holding rear crossmember in and made a hardware run to get bolts to hold it in is new location at the rear of the frame. (9/16").  Also removed the rivet on the drivers side for the tire holder brace, it will be relocated when the Blazer tank goes in.  Then ran out of daylight.

I skimmed the last picture and was like holy crap did he cut his frame in half?  ;D

You're gonna miss out on the whole, "well i figured it was a swap, but wasn't expecting that" crowd. then again most people dont know what a turbo is, which leads to a long drawn out conversation detailing the operation of turbo, wastegate, and blow off.

what are you doing for a cam? buttoning up the rest of the stupid stuff on mine, then gonna swap the cam and go to a black pro-flo intake, mostly for looks as mine obviously isn't a high rpm setup.

those gauges look awesome. if the headers wernt ceramic coated you could ratchet strap the flange towards the  frame rail  you want it to go and heat all 4 tubes evenly till they are red while ratcheting it more and it will pull the header away.

but they are ceramic coated..

those gauges are awesome, are those specific to our trucks or is it some sort of conversion?

I like opening the hood and it not being obvious that there is something else down there.  This happens to my brothers STS turbo'd Silverado..

For now I am not pulling the motor apart, I just need it to run/drive.  Cam swaps are simple on these so probably later it will get that.

The Dakota VHX gauges are specific to our trucks, they are in the catalog here:

The AC compressor?

The ecm for the 6.0.  Was wondering where you mounted it and do you have to consider heat issues when mounting them.

I haven't decided where I am going to put it, but I don't think the wiring will be long enough to put it in the original ECM location like I wanted to.
They originally were mounting to a bracket on the alternator mount, so weather and heat won't be an issue.

Saturday, April 21st, 2012: After getting the gas pedal mounted back in the truck, I found that the pedel (using the factory 03 throttle cable) lacked about an 1" to give WOT. Mounted the assembly in a vise, measure the length and bent the throttle lever back.  I also found that Dakota has a Module that could potentially eliminate some require wiring as it could send data to the cluster straight from the ALDL, so I mounted the module to the top of the throttle bracket.
In this picture it shows the end at 5-5/8" lenght.  Previously it was 4-5/8"

Sunday, May 20th, 2012: I really wanted to mount the Fuse/Relay section along witht the fuel pump relay/test lead outside, so I pulled all of the wire ties off
the wiring and started pealing everthing back.  I ended up cutting a few wires trying to extended it but decided to ditch the effort when I realized I would have to extend
to many wires.

So I made a compromise and made a bracket for the Fuse/Relay module to mount to the ECM mount.

I then cut 2 of the fuel relay/test wires and extended it out to where the original would have gone on for the TBI. Here is the wonderful fun of soldering wires...
After getting one end of the wiring done I realized I didn't have any Heat shrink tubing, so I had to stop.

Sunday, July 1st, 2012: Back to the passenger side.  I ran the Dakota Water Temp wiring from outside through the dash and down to the Controller, and I lengthened the VSS sending wire and ran it over to the Dakota Controller.  I also spliced the AC request wiring into the Painless wiring so it will plug up like the factory did.

This is what it looks like outside the firewall now:

Starting outside the firewall I wrapped the wiring and Zip-tied it every 6-8" and then snugged it neatly out of the way.

In the picture below I have routed all of the wiring up to the gauge opening with Zip-ties and tape wrap and attached the Fuel sender, Oil sender, water sender, Switch 1 and switch 2 for the Dakota menu, VSS send.  Also seen are the 2 white plugs that attach to the Left turn and Right turn signal so they are displayed in the factory turn openings.

This is where I put the Dakota menu switches:

What is left on the Dakota controller at this point is the Check Engine, DIM switch, Ground and Accessory power, and the Ignition switch power to the LS ECM.  Once these are done everything under the dash (minus radio wiring) will be completed and then on to under the hood.

Friday, July 6th, 2012: Finished connecting the Ground and Accessory power to the Dakota module and the ECM Ignition power wires to the  fuse box.  I made all of the wiring really long since as I need to get everything up top located so I can set the length.  After getting these connected I mounted the Pedal assembly back into the truck.

Saturday, July 7th, 2012: Unbolted the module from the pedal assembly and velcro tied all of the upper the wiring to check for proper length.

Once I got the length sorted out I began tape wrapping and Zip-tie'ing the dash/dakota wiring.

Once done with that I started shortening the firewall side wiring on the Dakota module, and then mounting it back.  Not seen in this picture, but the Dakota ALDL Module is also connected and wired.

Routed the ALDL wiring, the CAT5 for the Analog gauges and routed the dimmer wire for the Dakota module.

Routed the Brake, Hi Beam, Dimmer and Fuel sender wiring to the front of the Dakota module.  At this time the Dash/interior wiring is done (minus the radio)

Connected the ALDL, the CAT5 and the factory location turns to the VHX gauge and set it in place.

Saturday, July 28th, 2012: Modified the factory TBI firewall grommet by splitting it and cutting out the center to go over the wiring and fit back in the firewall.

Since I have a Carb'd truck that I am converting to Diesel, I used its firewall harness instead of the TBI as it had less wires and removed the Carb Solenoid, 12V to Coil, Choke, Coolant Temp and Oil Pressure relay wiring from the bulkhead fitting.  (these were removed from the inside previously)

What I ended up with was wiring for the starter, starter solenoid, Power junction and distribution for the Alternator and battery along with the windshield washer wiring.  The starter and alternator wires will end up being shortened for some and lengthened for others to match the original Wiring for the 99-02 pickup.

Here is a pic of the harness plugged back into the firewall distribution block

Here is where I started routing the firewall distribution to where it needs to go.  In the foreground you can see the Alternator wiring that will end up being tied into the factory plug from the LS ECM along with the Power to the Alternator.  I need to remove the PNP wiring from the LS harness as I won't be using it and I am also going to pull the EVAP wiring that I forgot about while I was focused on the inside.  Then I can start bundling the LS and stock wiring back together.

I don't know if you are aware but you can set the brightness in the programming mode without the dimmer. You can also set the dash lights to come on without the lights being on(when the key is turned on).
You can set differant brightness levels for Night/day as well. However you do have to go into the program mode which involves shutting the key off etc.
In the daytime it is really nice to have them backlit but that level needed changes depending on the position of the sun. for that reason alone I am going to add a dimmer.
When I do that I am also going to add a "lights on" warning buzzer. The gauge lighting turns off with the key not the lights so it would be easy to leave them on. especially if you're used to seeing them in the day time.
I'm curious if you could add a non Dakota dimmer switch as the appearance of it seems like it would be a little too obvious for my taste as nothing else in my dash stands out like the Dakota switch might.

I have a question regarding the fuel pumps you're using (EP241).  I am getting parts together to drop an LM7 into my 84 K20 and I am currently stuck on the fuel system.  I would like to keep the oem tank if at all possible.  Can I get an 87+ sending unit, upgrade the pump to the EP241 and drop that in my tank? Guessing baffling/top lock ring wouldn't work, correct?

How much fuel pressure does the EP241 produce, and what are you using for a filter/regulator (Corvette filter/reg combo)?

Thanks!
-Matt
Title: Re: 1987 R10 Driver
Post by: Captkaos on August 23, 2012, 06:39:25 PM
The EP241 pump was installed in the TPI and LT1 powered Vehicles and it flows 40gph at 50-55 psi, a EP381 pump was ran on the later Vortec motors and LS, it flows 50-60gph at 80-90 psi.  both of these are intank pumps and will work with the factory setup.  The EP381 would require the use of a regulator and would be best used with the 99-up Vette filter/regulator and allow you to run a single feed to the intake rail.

What I am using is a factory tank and sending unit with a EP241 and the factory EFI filter and a feed and return line.

Awesome!  One thing, will the later model (87+) sending units "drop in" my older 84 tank?  Or I am I better off replacing the tank with a later model.  The tank is only about a year old, thats part of the reason I would like to keep it.

I'm having a issue with my fuel pump as well. I think the EP241 is too tall for my tank that i pulled out of a chevy blazer. It was like a '01 blazer. The tank looks MUCH smaller then the one your using and I know if i use the wrong fuel pump (I.E. dont push enough PSI, even by a little) the truck wont start at all. Awesome!  One thing, will the later model (87+) sending units "drop in" my older 84 tank?  Or I am I better off replacing the tank with a later model.  The tank is only about a year old, thats part of the reason I would like to keep it.
Yes the sending units will work with the non-87 EFI tanks.  Just don't run them completely empty as in keep about 3 gallons in it.  There are baffles in the EFI tank to keep the pump "submerged" if you don't run it dry, you will be fine.

I have considered maybe getting a Walhbro aftermarket high flow and putting it in the tank. I was needing to know the GPH and PSI and know i have it.. thank you sir

My tank is from a 89 EFI Blazer and it is 31 gallons and was designed to fit in between the frame rails.  I am not sure what pump an 01 Tahoe calls for, but the factory one will supply enough fuel as they came with LS motors.  The EP241 will supply enough fuel for a LS, until you start getting boost crazy.

Sunday, October 28st, 2012: No pics, but I did get the battery hooked up in the truck and was actually able to turn it over.  Apparently my maniacal removal of wiring was a little overzealous.  I will have to add an actual wire to the Dakota controller that has actual constant power on it and I need to add ACC power instead or RUN power to it also.  I am fairly confident that it will crank though, just didn't have power to the VHX setup.  I also can't hear the fuel pump priming, so I need to track that down.  Nothing is in the tank, so that should be easy to find.  Short video of where I turned it over...

Sunday, November 4th, 2012: Started tracing all the wiring for the accessory power to the VHX controller, after tracing it back from the controller to the back of the fuse panel (took about an hour as all of this is taped now) I found what the issue was.  I left the fuse out.  Next was to trace the power wire, after tracing it back to the fuse block I found that I had spliced it into a connector that needed accessory power, but didn't plug it in either (Now I am taking better notes on what I did so I don't have to do this again).  I ended up removing the splice and getting a connector so I could plug it into the BAT port of the fuse panel.  Once all that was completed I went back and verified everything, put a battery in and then tested it to make sure it would crank.  So here is the second time it turned over.

Once that was verified I moved on to installing the radiator hoses (from the donor 6.0L) onto my aftermarket Aluminum radiator, then installed the Electric fans from Perma Cool.  Prior to running out of daylight I found the upper radiator hose wasn't going to fit my 73-80 (larger upper inlet) radiator.

Since it was dark I took a short video of the gauges in the dark when they are turned on.

Saturday, November 10th, 2012: The better part of the day was spent trying to get a constant/consistent 12V to the Fuel pump.  Since the truck was dual tanks I removed the second splice for the passenger side tank and used it to extend down to the rear mounted tank.  At first I thought I had it wired incorrectly, so I pulled the unit from the tank and hook it to the original plug, no go.  Pulled a senders from one of the saddle tanks I removed and it didn't work, so I pulled the other and it did work, so I chalked it up as a bad AC241 pump.  Removed the aluminum radiator and replaced it with a copper brass 3 flue from the 1989 K5.  Hooked all of the radiator lines and transmission lines back up and re-installed the Electric Fans.

I then moved to the driveshaft.  After getting it in position I found several of the holes were filled with dirt dauber, so I proceeded to clean them out.  I pulled the straps supplied by the driveshaft builder and found they were no where near working, so I had to leave it partially installed only connected to the rear axle yoke.

Tuesday, November 13th, 2012:Went by the driveshaft shop to return the incorrect strap kit and they counter guy told me that is all he had.  After requesting to speak with the driveshaft guy that has been building me driveshafts for the past 20+ years I finally got the straps I needed and found they were dealer only straps.

Saturday, November 17th, 2012: Installed the new straps on the transmission yoke, driveshaft is in.

Pulled the sending unit out and instead of removing the old pump I just hooked the new one up and nothing.  After tracing everything back with the help of my daughter turning on the key I found power coming from the ECM at the connector and that I neglected to reconnect it.  After connecting it, I still didn't get consistent 12V.  So with some help of my wife testing all of the connections 20 more times I found plug coming from the ECM had come loose, so I put a connector on it and now I have power.

Now comes time to modify the AC381 pump to fit in the TBI sender.  The pump comes with 2 tangs on it that must be removed completely before it will go back in the pump tray.  Here is a picture after cutting the first one off flush.

This is where both are cut off but not cut down flush for the gasket to fit.  Note is it beside a AC241 pump with the recess cut down, the AC381 must match what the AC241 and the stock pump look like to seat properly.

After installing the pump to the sending unit, I fulled it with 2.5 gallons of gas and it was put back in the tank and the lines were reconnected.

All of the fittings from the tank to the back of the intake were then tightened up.  Then with the help of my wife the system was flushed out before connecting to the feed/supply lines.  After checking for leaks I had her turn it over a few times to make sure everything was ok.  Installed the spark plug wires and decided it was the moment to see it it would fire off.

No there wasn't any fire, LOL, the truck only has 3/4 length headers and she felt heat coming from under the truck.  After a walk around and crawl under and no leaks we tried cranking it over a few more times to make sure of no leaks.  This is the 4th time we cranked it over.  My daughter actually cranked it this time.

Emmissions isn't going to be any harder. My harness (and the factory one) will already have it in there.  If you use the factory harness you only need about 5 wires going into the firewall.  My K5 conversion will be done like that most likely.

No idea on the cost though, but like I said, if you get a pullout with everything from the intake to the exhaust, it simplifies the process...

Saturday, November 24th, 2012: Brazed on a fitting to the radiator heater core fitting as I don't need it anymore and I am running the steam line to it.  Hooked up the heater hoses to and filled up the motor with coolant.  Didn't want it to get cold and ruin all this progress and also didn't want to over heat the motor trying to find the miss.  After cranking it a few times I found that either the gaskets or the water pump is leaking. And I the miss is either an injector, the coil pack, the spark plug or just been sitting to long...

Sunday, November 24th, 2012:  spent the day tracking down the Miss.  I need to turn off the EVAP and EGR in the ECM as they keep throwing codes.  After getting it running long enough a putting some WD40 in the cylinders, most of the missing stopped.  Pulled the plugs out of the missing cylinders and it didn't appear to be firing so I swapped them out.  That fixed a miss.  Pulled the plug wires off to see if the coil packs were firing, all were good now.  (no idea why), but I still had one miss on #1 and #2.  After unplugging the injector wire on each and then playing with the plug wires the missed stopped.

I also wanted found that the 700R4 gear selector bracket won't work on a 4L80E.  Sort figured it, but wanted to confirm.  I pulled the bracket off my 91 CrewCab with a 4L80E and put in on the 4L80E in this truck, hooked everything up and I am able to get it into gear.  IF you want to use the factory brackets, they will work, BUT you have to get them off the trucks that have the 15614397 number on it.  Here is a picture of a 4L80E (you can see 4397) on the left and the 700R4 on the right.  Note the orientation of the slot in the center.

Do you still have the throttle cable from the donor?  I am using the throttle cable from the 03 donor, you just have to modify the clip the for the firewall.  I have pics of it and thought I posted them but apparently not..

On this truck I am putting it together like you see it.  eventually the body will be painted, but other than that, it is staying like it is.  This will be a driver.

Initially I don't care what the power range is, the motor needs to come out and the rings gapped before we get silly with the boost.  The turbos will support 1000hp though.  I would like to see around 800hp eventually.

Capt, love the build. I see I'm not the only one with the desire to put turbos on these air plows as a DD but looks like for now you're the only one with the $$$ to put into a build like this. I think my biggest problem in starting this build will be wanting to do everything myself which will involve me getting welders, benders ohohoh...cnc machine just incase, you never know what you wish you could make for a project until you make it.

I showed my wife the Dakota gages a lont time ago off your website and she just laughed at me. Last night I showed them to her again but I showed her what they looked like when you hooked them up and she was all about them until I showed her  the price...in time. I will start with the motor first an build on it from there.

I like that you are keeping this as a Daily and not making it a garage kept perfect sunday weather driver only. If it was up to me I would have sunk the $3k into the drive train first and then paint and body. But don't get me wrong there was and is nothing wrong with the engine and tranny and diffs except for the fact that I own the truck now.
I will definitely be following the rest of this build and us eit when I do mine because it will happen one way or another.

haha and people wonder why I would never get married again. I have toys and waste my money on them and no one can say otherwise :) My buddy is only allowed one slice of cheese on his sandwiches so it could be worse.

Looks like the assembly is coming together nicely. I can't wait to turbo my stepside but I've got a ways to go with my other projects first. Looks like you'll be having some fun in no time.

Friday, July 5th, 2013: It is actually going way slower than I anticipated.  I am at the start of week 8 and it was supposed to be done weeks ago.  Now the fab shops fabricators just had a baby...

Hey Capt...sorry things are going slow but that's the price we pay for not being able to do everything ourselves. I did have a question about the fuel system you rigged up. First off, what fittings did you use and where did you get them? Also it looks like you just cut the tips off the sending unit and...flared(?) compression fittings(?) both?  Also I'd like to keep both tanks when I do mine do you now any specs on the selector solenoid like if it can handle the pressure I would need to run modern fuel injection vice the TBI?

Wednesday, July 10th, 2013: Since the intercooler is taking up so much space behind the grill I had them fabricate a core support brace back in to replace the one that was removed and integrate it into the Intercooler.  Although it is pictured with the factory grill in place there will be a billet grille in there as I need as much flow across it as I can get.

Friday July 12th, 2013: There was some confusion on how I wanted the rear exhaust completed.  I wanted it all welded with a V-band in it for easy removal.  So I had ordered those the previous Monday and dropped them off this week and the started final weld on the drivers side exhaust.  They didn't get to the passenger side before running out of time.

Monday July 15th, 2013: While welding up the passenger side one of the Vibrant clamps broke they had to steal one from the driver side to get it welded up.  When they got to the tail section we wanted it to appear factory so I asked them to fab up a bracket that would match the drivers side.

Tuesday July 16th, 2013: They got the hanger bracket fab'd and bolted it on to complete the passenger side.  They were supposed to deliver it to my house but with the time that passed the battery had died, it was pouring down rain and I had somewhere to be, so we decided to deliver on Wednesday the 17th.

If you use a Pollak switch valve (pretty much all you can get now) it is good to up to 65psi.  It is PN 42-300P.
If you run a Corvette filter (AC GF652) and you have a returnless system, you only have to run lines to the filter and then just one line to the engine...

I didn't realize that the tank that you used already had threaded fittings vice the rubber hose and clamps on the OE TBI sending units. I'm sure that I can find a way to adapt it  somehow, maybe with a cut, nut and flair. Thanks for the info and I bet if feels good to have the truck back home.

Saturday, August 31st, 2013: Pulled a spare F-body block off and drilled it and tapped it with 1/8th NPT and installed it on the truck.  I don't really like how close it is to the exhaust, but until I figure out a better routing this is how it will be.

My brother came over for moral support and we looked for several alternatives but I finally gave in and started mounting the two return pumps to the frame just below and forward of the turbos.  He also pulled the injector rails off so I could get the new injectors installed.  That was a fun wrestling match..

Monday, September 2nd, 2013: Gathered up more fittings than I cared to to create a transfer line from drivers site to passenger side.  I decided to run it over and above the frame and keep it as far away from rubbing anything or getting to much heat.  Still need to return some I didn't need/open but I got the feed line done up to the oil fill cap. Now it was time to start routing all the wiring from the engine back back to the oil return pumps and the pressure switches for the alarm buzzer.  I got both of them layed out but ran out of daylight and didn't have my electrical tool to remove some grommets for the wiring I pulled out of the truck.

Friday, September 6th, 2013:  Since I am getting closer to getting this thing running I had to aquire a MAP sensor to be able to handle the boost and Speed Density as I am dumping the MAF.  With that said I picked up a 2 Bar MAP from a supercharged Colbat and a 3.3 BAR MAP from a Duramax Turbo Diesel.  Since I don't plan to pound on this stock motor much I elected to go with the 2 BAR for now.  For those interested, it is GM PN 12615136 and it plugs straight into the Stock MAP location.

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013:  During the week I finally found an auto parts store with enough 1/4" vacuum line to run to the Turbos, so I got them setup and routed throughout the truck for both turbos (didn't get a final pic, was too late at night) and I connected it to the passenger side of the intake and I tapped the Blow off Valve into the brake booster line.

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013: After getting all the small things out of the way I swapped out the stock plugs for a colder set and gapped them to .030".  After much hesitation and debate over washing the cylinders out with the 1000cc (95lb) injectors I broke down and check the engine oil level, got a catch can and cranked on it 3 times to make sure oil was making it to the return (currently in the oil fill)

This is the 3rd cranking after getting oil in the catch can.

Feeling rather confident I decided to re-verify the oil level and crank it again.  unfortunately I forgot to put the oil return back on and shot oil all over the place, TWICE.

After topping it off and getting everything straight I cranked it once again and called it a night.

Monday, September 23rd, 2013:  Came home early to get the truck to our tuner James Henson at www.hensonperformance.com (http://www.hensonperformance.com) and cranked her up again to make sure there were no leaks.  After running it up to operating temp, I realized that the electric fan was never hooked up.  Got it working and it still wouldn't come on, so I checked the coolant level.  Found the coolant level to be low as in below the sensor, so I topped it off ran it some more.

After a while  the fans came on and cooled it off.  BUT now we had an issue with the Alternator not charging.  Generally there is a setting on the ECM to command the Alternator on with the 1 wire.  I contacted James and told him to check and he confirmed that mine was not set to one we new was charging so he changed it for when it showed up, but I had to cancel due to it being to late to show up.

Tuesday, September 24th, 2013: Came home early again after having the battery on charge all night and this time checked the coolant level.  It was low.  Prior to sending it to have the turbo tubing welded I had topped it off and it leaked so I replaced the seals as it appeared they were leaking.  Apparently it was more than just the seals.

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013: Came home and went to the local parts store and bought a new Water pump for the truck.  Had to go to 3 different places to find one.

Thursday, September 26th, 2013: Got home and pulled the AC compressor, AC mount off the truck and removed the water pump and found it leaking at the back.  I had to counter sink one of the holes as I am using the high mount AC with the Original Compressor.  Got it all back together and filled the engine and radiator with water and let it run up to operating temp to very there were no air pockets.  Fans came on and everything looked ok.

It was during this time I found my second issue.  Apparently in my hurried state I didn't tighten the air side compressor housing and now that it is holding oil, I have a leak.

Friday, September 27th, 2013: Got home verified all turbo housing bolts were tighted and the battery was fully charged I call a buddy of mine to follow me to the dyno.  I took a video of the drive there, but I was shot upside down when I imported it... LOL
When I got to the dyno we uploaded the Alternator change and it was still not charging....  I also forgot to put in the IAT.

Drive to the dyno.

Friday, September 27th, 2013: Went by the Dyno shop and fixed my Alternator problem.
In this post, from research it said to swap the ECM from Red 15 to Red 52, this is NOT correct!, so I swapped it back... http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,12120.msg206488.html#msg206488 (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,12120.msg206488.html#msg206488)
After making this switch, I am now charging at full capacity.

Now I needed to mount the IAT.  I choose to tap the intake where the EVAP was with a 3/8" NPT and put in a 1991 Syclone IAT in its place.  After drilling it out I then tapped it and now can splice the wires from the MAP into this to get the Intake temps.  Hopefully he can start on tunning it soon!

Saturday, October 5th, 2013:  Went by the shop to get the Speed Density tune started.  After uploading the new tune we started playing with it and finally got it to idle (after running out of gas) and got the 02's down to around 14.  Called it a day as we both had something to do.  No videos as it was just us working on the Computer.

Monday, October 7th, 2013:  He got it running without dumping gas, but now I have a new problem.  The EP381 pump is running out of steam and won't allow it to do a full pull.  Now I am trying to source a new pump.

I was on SMI last night and read this:

Carburetors love fuel volume, but hate pressure. Pressure creates inconsistent aeration of the fuel in the float bowl, which causes inconsistent metering. Picture in your mind a water nozzle spraying into a bucket; the more pressure used, the more froth and air bubbles are created. If you have proper volume, the optimal fuel pressure is 4PSI for modern 2 and 4 BBL carbs. High horsepower drag care may not be able to run this low because G force works against fuel attempting to travel from the fuel cell in rear to carburetors up front.
So now we have established that volume is critical. Let's examine factors that effect low volume, and there are many.

1st the obvious:
 Fuel Pump capacity
 Fuel Line size
 Fuel Pump style
 Fuel Pump placement

Capacity: Bigger is better. But… rating methods vary; some are rated with no output pressure or restriction. Others are measured at specified output pressure (A.K.A. 110GPH at 7PSI) (These ratings DO NOT specify the size, length, etc. of inlet of outlet size used.)

Line Size: Because manufacturer ratings fail to specify inlet or outlet size, we must assume the maximum size possible was used. Therefore, any reduction in size, no matter where it occurs, will reduce volume.

Beyond size, angles in fuel lines cause restrictions that reduce volume. Every 90° bend in the system reduces volume by 12%.

Example: Initial = 100GPH
 1st 90° = 88GPH
 Initial = 88GPH
 2nd 90° = 77.44 GPH

Look at the fuel systems on most all vehicles, race, street, off road, etc. Almost without fail you will find at least 1 90° bend, plus 45°, 30° etc. More common you will find 180°, 135°, 90°, 45°, one after the other.

So your 100GPH, by the time it gets to the carburetor, could be as low as 20-30 GPH. This is why fuel pump manufacturers rate GPH vs HP at what seems a completely excessive ratio. They realize that they must consider a worst case scenario: to safeguard against the most unacceptable installation.

To look at this situation from a completely different standpoint, view the following; Cost of engine: $10,000 for 600HP, Cost of Minimum Required Fuel Pump: $200, Cost of Maximum Required Fuel Pump: $600, Differential = $400.

Possible cost of repairing damage to engine to lack of fuel volume is a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $5,000. By using the best possible component when designing your fuel system, you protect a much larger investment, give yourself peace of mind and invest in something that you can trust to grow with you.

Just a thought.  Maybe there is something you could do to the fuel routing to help it.

Not really relative since mine is fuel injected and turbocharged.  I know what the problem is, it appears the pump isn't performing up to par, it should support 350hp, but is falling on its face.

I took all the back roads to avoid any urge to stand in it.

Saturday, October 19th, 2013: pulled the EP381 pump out and replaced it with a Walbro 255lph pump from my brothers turbo truck (we updated it to the above 430lph pump also)  that made up to 600rwhp hoping to solve a fuel delivery problem.

Monday, October 21st, 2013: They put it back on the dyno and it is still running out of fuel, but instead of dropping to 0lbs it is dropping to 20 at the fuel rail.

Tuesday, October 22, 2013: went back to the Dyno shop and installed an inline pressure tester and was getting 70lbs at the tank outlet but still only 50 at the fuel rail.

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013: went back to the dyno shop and moved the inline tester to after the fuel filter.  Pressure at the rail and there matched, but still saw a pressure drop at high rpms in neutral.  Replaced the regulator with a new one with no change.

Saturday, October 26th, 2013:Went back to the dyno shop to determine the issue.  Took enough braided line to bypass the filter and a new filter just in case.  After getting everything pulled apart to bypass the filter I went to unbolt the inlet side and found an issue.  Proceeded to pull it completely off and noticed some off-color tint.  Grabbed a napkin and below is what I found.  Apparently in my haste to get this going I replaced all the fuel lines but not the filter.

After getting the new filter on the initial pressure drop (not surprisingly) wasn't as bad, so reconnected the gauges and It was reading 50 at the pump and at the fuel rail.   Then went to rip on it and it still was dropping but not as bad.  We made a few changes to the fuel curve and it got somewhat better (we were dumping a lot of gas due to the previous lean condition) but it still was dropping to 30lbs right when the turbos were trying to spool (in neutral).  Check voltage at the pump and it was reading a steady 12.4, and went to 12.6 at high rpm, but I ran out of time.

Next on the agenda find my spare fuel rail, clean it out and then swap everything over on the truck and either finish up ordering the stuff for the 430 mounting and hotwire kit, or the double pumper and hotwire or both, just in case.

Saturday, November 2nd, 2013:  pulled out my spare Fuel rail and spent time cleaning it all out and then pulled the rail off the truck pulled the injectors and cleaned all of them out.  Reinstalled everything and now instead of 52lbs and the rail it is now reading 80lbs, so I swapped out the regulator with the one on the original rail, found some junk behind it and cleaned it out and reinstalled, still had 80lbs of pressure and the rear was pegged (guage goes to 60)  Reving it up in neutral it dropped to 60 at the rail but didn't push it.  James said he would put it on the dyno and recheck it..

Monday, November 11th, 2013: http://hensonperformance.com/ (http://hensonperformance.com/) called me and said he got it on the dyno and at 4500rpms the pressure drops to 45lbs and then the motor just dies.  In addition it still has 80lbs of pressure at idle.  I told him I would come by and see if the return line is clogged.

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013: Went back to http://hensonperformance.com/ (http://hensonperformance.com/), removed the return line and blew it out, NOTHING.  Removed the regulator and found a ripped o-ring, replaced the o-ring and then re-installed.  Cranked it up and now I have 96lbs!  So there has to be a restriction in the supply side.  Removed the line from the return side of the tank and cranked it up.  Still had high pressure on the rail...  I am wondering if the flex hose in front of the filter is blocked.  Next plan for Saturday is to eliminate that line.

Saturday, November 16th, 2013: Went back to http://hensonperformance.com (http://hensonperformance.com) and removed all of the fuel line from the filter to the rail to determine where my blockage was.  Bypassing all of this still got no change in the pressure front or rear ran out of time but I have a plan.

Sunday, November 17th, 2013: Went back to http://hensonperformance.com (http://hensonperformance.com) got another regulator and replaced it with the same high pressure results, so I am not determined that it is the return side with issues.  Removed the return line from the tank and dropped it in a gas can where you can see.  Found the problem!  No gas was coming out but a drip.  Pulled the rail loose and blew threw the return and the metal line was stopped up completely.  Put it all back together and now the pressure it at 50lbs and I couldn't get it to drop.  Hopefully he can make a pull on it now...

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013: After a month we have the fuel sorted out enough to get the truck on the dyno at hensonperformance.com and do the Speed Density Tune for drivability.  Still dropping fuel pressure, but we were able to pull to 6000rpms.  Truck made 450.1hp @ 5100 and 500.6lb/ft at 4300 with 7.7lbs of boost all while spinning the single leg on the drum.  Now I can get it back swap in the limited slip 3.42 axle, install the caltracs and get the bed put on and figure out the fuel filler and eventually install the 430 Walbro.

So, I'm not good with math but with my shoes of I'm guessing just under or right at 500hp at the crank? Now the question is are you going to stop there or try and squeeze a little more out, Chris? Oh and it does sound great and I'm not sure if there is a such thing as too loud, but I guess that goes in the daily driver question of how much is too much which is always different depending on whose driving and what you are willing to live with. But with the bed on and without the acoustics from the door behind it I think it's going to sound sweet. There's nothing like hearing that whistle of turbos spinning up.
Never had an experience with dyno's but will kicking both drums around show better numbers?

The drivetrain is probably eating about 80hp.  If the wheel wasn't spinning it would probably have a different curve maybe more power.
Since this is a completely stock LQ4 that I never opened up I am going to be conservative with it.  It is currently giving 7.7lbs of boost, I probably won't go over 10lbs, but I need the bigger pump in it first.  If I can get near 550hp I will stop.

Tuesday November 26th, 2013: Sourced some trailer towing lights and set out to pick up the truck.  Had to go by and find a belt as the dyno session ate it.  Took 3 trips to find one.  After getting it on and cracking it I found it was too long.  Upon further inspection I found the tension was toast..

Wednesday November 27th, 2013:  Had to completely rebuild the Tensioner from 2 different tensioners as I didn't have time to file down the back of another good one.  This is after sourcing and aftermarket one that wouldn't work.  Got it all on and and got the towing lights working and got it home.

Saturday, December 28th, 2013: Took the 10 bolt that I swapped 12bolt 5 lug axles to out from under my K5 Blazer to get it ready to install.  Benefits: better gear ratio (3.42), limited slip (although its a gov-loc) and it will be equipped with disc brakes.

First order of business was to fix the huge leak at the front of the pinion.  I marked the pinion, nut and Yoke so I would know where everything was.  It was already loose so I planned to tighten it when done.  With a 1-1/4" socket and an impact it came off MUCH easier than expected.  Once off I pried the seal out and then using a guide I knocked it back into place and reinstalled the Yoke and gave it a little more.

With that out of the  way I pulled the cover to verify the gear ratio.  This came out of my 1989 K5 and you can tell this is original from the date.  Also note the 12 41 number indicating 3.42 gears

Saturday, January 11th, 2013: Due to my wifes foot surgery I had to pause on progress, but finally made it back out to finish up the discs.  Mounted the Caliper on the driver side and started on the passenger side

During this time I also picked up some 1972 C10 Front brake hoses and had some hose brackets made:

Now to the fun part.  All along I new there was a bolt broke off in the housing.  When I went to remove it I found that it wasn't a bolt but what appeared to be an EZ out.  I got a carbide bit about 1/4" in diameter and started grinding on it in hopes I would find the end.

Sunday, January 19th, 2013: After trying every alternative and probably grinding on this broken metal for about an 2 hours over the course of a week I started getting desparate.  I ended up finding a pointed carbide bit and started grinding again and after about 10 minutes I started noticing that more metal was coming out.  Withing about 5 minutes the hard metal was gone and it was chewing up the bolt.  I was finally able to drill it the rest of the way out and then tap it.

Saturday, March 8th, 2014: Removed the grille to check the turn signal bulbs as the blinkers indicators weren't working in the Dakota setup.  After verifying they were good, checked the obvious and fixed 2 problems.  No fuse in the Turn/Bckup terminal on the fuse panel.

I also took the opportunity to put the billet grille in..  I think it shows the intercooler to well

I agree with you, your eye's are automatically drawn to the inter cooler when you look at the front of your truck.  Maybe if the billet grill was darker it would hide the inter cooler some.

You could always hard black anodize the core, leaving a flat finish that will more effectively reject heat - while at the same time leaving the pipes polished aluminum to create a 'mystery' behind the grille.

It is much more humorous when they do though which is why I hid everything and it looks like a "normal" truck.

My theory on my last was was close to the same, just it wasn't "pretty".  Problem was the 454, it was very loud.

True but I would go on the cheap and just fog it with some satin spray bomb.

Saturday, March 22nd, 2014: Borrowed some space in a buddies shop just in case it rained and removed the bed bolts (8 3/4" socket and wobbler), The rear diff vent (1/2" socket and extension) and unpluged the rear light harness.  Got the bed in the air rolled the truck out and then started to remove the previously installed pump/sending unit.  When I pulled it out I found that the one they sold me wasn't the right one and had to call them and get another one on its way which was a wait of about 3 hours.  During that time I had to unassemble the existing sending unit put all the parts back on.  I also took the time to round the new Racetronix Syclone hotwire kit which was more than long enough to fit.  This gives me alternator voltage direct to the pump, or about 14.8 volts.  After finally getting the new sending unit I had to scramble to get everything together before it got too late.  Finished it up and drive the truck this morning (following day) with an operational sending unit!

I only had time for this one photo...

Very awesome build. I think you should paint the radiator support and intercooler gloss black to hide it behind that billet grill. That way the gloss black on the grill and it blends together. You would still be able to see it but it wont be saying hey look at me anymore.

Friday, May 30th, 2014: Driving home and close to home something didn't seem right pulling into the driveway.  As I put it in reverse and backed up and then went to go back in drive I realized something wasn't working.  Turned the truck off and found that the shift linkage had fell off.  Spent the next day puttting it back on.  It was also at this time I found a slight oil leak coming from who knows where...

Wednesday, June 18th, 2014: Driving home and close to home something didn't seem right again.  As I was pulling into the gas station to fill up,  (since I haven't routed the gas fill yet, I am limited on where I can fill this thing up) I noticed something fishy going on with the front end like the whole side of the truck was moving.  I carefully drive it the mile home and discovered that the shims were all gone from the passenger side.

Had to go out of town for a week so the Suburban pulled daily duty for a while.

Sunday, July 6th, 2014: Pulled out the new OE style vinyl skinned dash and started fitting the trim panel and AC ducts to it.  The middle duct required a little trimming to get the vent in.  Used a 3/8" nut driver, razor and heat gun (just in case)

Thursday, May 15th, 2014: Heater core started leaking really bad.

Saturday, May 17th, 2014: Picked up a replacement heater core on Friday and started to remove all the required components.
Removed the heater hoses, removed the internal bolt and cable assembly, remove the outer bolts, dropped the inner fender and removed the 2 lower bolts.  Pulled the internal assembly out, cleaned it up and reinstalled.  (I lost a lot of pics on this and was running out of daylight...)

Just a quick update, but one turbo did start having issues, so I have decided to pull them off and upgrade them.  During all this I am also putting the new axle in, swapping to 4 wheel discs and putting new shocks and brake hose on all the way around.

Which turbo are you upgrading to ?

October 9, 2014: dropped the truck off at http://hensonperformance.com/ (http://hensonperformance.com/) to get the truck dyno'd again after changing the turbo's, rear axle swap to 3.42 gears and limited slip, lowering and 4 wheel disc swap.  Now I can drive it and beat on it some without worrying about a bad batch of gas.  It has recently developed a oil leak that appears to be the rear main so I am not going to push this motor.  Plan on getting the other 6.0L pulled down and put back together and swap it out.  It made 457.9@5100rpm and 505.5lb/ft@4250rpms on 7.7lbs.

Saturday, August 30th, 2014: Planned the day around installing the new drop leaf springs and Caltracs.
Here is the Caltracs right out of the box:

The front spring eye bushing will have to be completely removed and a new aluminum bushing.  I used a press to do this.

Here is a comparison of the dropped vs stock leaf

Test fitting the caltrac.  They must be able to move freely.  So some metal was trimmed off the sides (both required some clearancing, this was the worst side)

Sunday, September 28th, 2014: After a couple more drives I finally narrowed the noise (other than the gear whine on accell) to the Calipers grinding on the rotor.  When I bought these brackets from Captain Fab there were mentions of this happening but I had these for a while.  Emailed Captain Fab about it and he told me to take pics.  In my haste of getting it installed I never noticed the difference in the rotors.  I ordered a replacement set and asked them to order 3, you will see why soon...

Here is where it was grinding.. (passenger side)

This is the Passenger side rotor:

Monday, September 29th, 2014: Rotors showed up and I went to pick them up.  I initially just had them open the box, compared my measurement was the same and emailed Captain Fab my findings and told him I would give him measurements on my setup.  Went to lunch and then went back to the store and asked to see and measure all of the rotors.  I found 2 different sized as before.  7.3/8" and 7.1/2"

This 7.3/8" rotor, this matched my side that didnt rub:

This 7.1/2" rotor:

All 3 rotors (from Autozone) had the same part number and manufacturer/company.

NASTY-LSX, the Impala cars with HD suspension share the same bolt pattern with the 2WD trucks up to 1999.

Eventually plan to paint it.  Tan and Red 2 tone.

How do you like the air filters under the truck? Would it be better to build a housing for them, or do they seem to work well and stay dry exposed like that?

Well every STS truck and car we have installed a remote kit on has them underneath and haven't had any issues with them.
I drive it everyday and haven't had any issues with it at all they are mounted up in the gas tank humps.

Thank you, I was concerned with them getting wet under there, but I suppose water probably wouldn't get up that high. Anyways, the build looks sweet and I really like the turbo setup, only thing I would do differently is hide the plumbing somehow, maybe just paint it black so it catches no one's eye.

Short of running through 10" deep rivers my should not get wet.
The one side of piping was supposed to mimic the other side with a bend and I was going to blend it in with black paint, but oh well...

Saturday, April 18th, 2015: Windows were getting really foggy over the past few weeks and I discovered that the heater core I replaced barely a year ago is now leaking in the floor, A LOT!  My daughter wanted to help take bolts out so...

Pulled back the carpet and found this... Again...

This felt in the flooring was pretty bad, so I just cut it off and removed it.

Luckily the floor was easily cleaned back up.

Since it was LS powered I couldn't just cap everything off and the loop I had in the waterpump last time was collapsed, so I had to wait until the the parts store could get me the U hose and I just pulled the existing lines off.

Saturday, May 9th, 2015: I went and picked up my spare bed so I can do some modifications to it that will allow me to drive anywhere and fill up the tank.  Previously I had two gas stations that I knew I could fill up at and it would only take me about 8 minutes to get gas as it wanted to spill out.  I had plans to go on Power Tour and I needed to be able to go anywhere.

Bed lacks much in the way of pretty, but I won't mind cutting it up as I found it from a friend and it was rotting in the woods.

Wednesday, May 13th, 2015: Seeing that I am going on Power Tour I figured I would need to charge my AC, so I vacuumed down the system and let it set overnight.  I ended up charging it later on prior to going to Power Tour but the pulley setup was giving me fits.  I had issues with the original Novack setup so I called them and the told me they would send me an updated setup that used a different pulley.  So far other than a weird vibration when the AC is on at the idler everything works ok..  I also ended up NOT using it during Power Tour, just ran with the windows down.

Had my brother come over to assist, not shown, but the bed was in this position A LOT while we tweaked the tubes.  I should have cut a slot in the cross sill and plated it, but at this time in the game it was WAY to late.  We worked on it for 3 hours sneaking up on getting it on there.

Sunday, June 7th, 2015: The seal on the rear end had gotten to the point I really wanted to replace it prior to leaving on Power Tour. With seal in hand I proceded to get after it.  With the wheel removed, you can see it was pretty bad.  Keeping in mind the truck was not washed for probably a good 6 months...

Tuesday, June 9th, 2015: This was our first stop for gas on Power Tour 2015!  Note that the 3 trucks pictured didn't get gas.
2000 Silverado got the best mpg at 18, mine got 17.5.  I was pleasantly surprised.

My truck made it through the 3 stops we went to without an issue.  My brothers 2000 Silverado blew a relay on the 2nd day on the way back to Birmingham. We stopped to meet someone and his truck was pouring smoke out the back.  The scavenge pump for his remote turbo wasn't pumping the oil back.  We spent about 2 hours trying to figure it out and finally found the bad relay and a spare (in his console of all places)

This is a pic of us on the other issue, a Challenger blew the oil sender out and we spend a good while on the side of the road finding parts to get him going.

Monday, October 28th, 2015: Scary story time.  For 22,000 miles the truck has been operating flawlessly.  It had a bad rearend whine from the axle I swapped in it and the first week of August I had new ring pinion and Eaton LSD along with Moser Axles.  Radiator had a leak that I swapped out a good one for...  This is something that didn't give any warning.  While driving in to work (luckily after I dropped my daughter off at school) I had a car in from of me hit their brakes which is not big deal as this thing stops pretty good with the 4 corner discs.  When I went to hit the brakes there was a "pop" in the brake pedal and it dropped to the floor.  I was able to slow down and not wreck and eventually got it home.  When I got it there I crawled under it and found this...  I ordered a replacement brake and picked it up later that week.

Quick memory on cost...
Motor, running hacked wiring harness - $800
Wiring harness - got painless on sale  - $500
Twin Turbos (not considering the originals that one died) - $1800
Turbo control, wiring blow off, waste gates etc - $1500
Stainless Tubing - $250
X-pipe kit (modified with the above) - $400
Aluminum tubing, couplers intercooler etc - $2200
TIG welding - $2500
S&P Headers - $600

I am sure I am missing stuff but that is the big items.

I disagree with the 2.5K thing...  I got my turbo stuff at a discount since I was a dealer and I had accounts with other vendors also...

Hey captkaos

Where did you get your fuel line? I need to replace the factory steel lines anyways so id like to just go steel the whole way with out any rubber. I know im going to use a 87 tank with a diffrent pump as long as i dont let it get below 2 or 3 gals so the pump dont get hot. I asked at my local auto parts and he said to use brake line?

The braided line or the steel line?  The steel line is the factory lines.  If you need some inlinetube.com or classictube.com sells replacement lines.  If you use the 87-up EFI tanks you don't have to worry about it running low.

You cannot run hardlines all the way as you have to allow for flex.

Braided lines maybe thats what i want? Ill have to do some looking around to find some. Is that the way to go over buying the factory steel lines and then using higher rated rubber hose?

Very nice build and thread! Wow. When I started reading I was looking for something to help me in an upcoming swap which I found. Then it got radical. Didn't see that coming. You are making me want to get the GN back out the shed before I get started on my swap with all this turbo stuff! LOL! Took me 3 days in the evening after work to get to the end but was well worth it. Thanks for posting it. I have a few questions but, will post as they come up in my swap and will ask them when I get a build thread started.

Thanks!  Need to get time to add some more posted updates.

Filling in...
Sunday, January 17th, 2016: I was out in the truck for lunch and it started overheating.  After pulling over and inspecting everything I found this blown fuse, replaced it and was on my way.

Tuesday, January 18th, 2016:  While running to lunch smoke started pouring out the passenger side tailpipe.  I discovered that the Turbo Oil Scavenge pump decided to stop working.  I ended up having to replace it.  It made a nice mess everywhere.

Wednesday, March 19th, 2016: I got the braided lines in from Inlinetube.com  This is what I used to fix the bursting factory brake flex hoses. I modified the bracket during this time but is wasn't permanent.

Also during this time I started hearing a loud clunking noise from under the truck when shifting from reverse to drive.  I got home and got under it and discovered the nut, washer and lock washer were no longer on the transmission mount.

Monday, April 24th, 2016: This day I drove to work and on the way back from lunch I discovered a large oil puddle under where I had previously parked.  Getting out and inspecting it had a familiar smell but I couldn't place it.  On the way out I realized it was gear oil.  Upon inspection I found a bolt trying to exit my diff cover.

After getting home and pulling the cover I discovered the following.  It appears the person who put my rear gears in missed an important part of the equation, thread locker.  Needless to say my gearset was toast.

Wednesday, April 26th, 2016: Spent the evening pulling the rearend out to take it and get it fixed.  I got it back in on May 5th.

I am slacking.  Right now the truck is at 32K miles.  I have a wastegate sticking I think or making a noise at boost which I hope is a wastegate.
And it is needing tires and the AC recharged after the aftermarket one blew last year.

Having gone through the entire thread and seeing the pain you had with your fuel system, I'm wondering what your recommendation would be?  Given what you know now, if you a brand new 87 fuel tank (with baffles), what sending unit, pump etc would you use?  Would you buy brand new lines?  What filter?

I have a 1985 C10 longbed and just bought a 6.0 with 6l90e that I want to swap, perhaps supercharge or turbo in the future.  Seeing all the fuel delivery problems you had to work through makes me think I need to do it right from the start, even if I have to spend a little more.  Thanks so much for putting together this detailed build.  It makes tackling the project a lot less intimidating!

Cheers,

Phil

My issue was 1) didn't replace the fuel filter that was clogged with dirt, 2) that in turn filled the rails with dirt 3) that ended up plugging the return side of the second intake rail.

My tank was clean, sending unit was in usable condition, pumps were either new or known good.
I am currently doing another swap and plan to use the same setup.  Factory tank (was in the Blazer), new PTFE Hose, new filter, same sending unit and a Walbro 255 along with the stock Intake lines and rebend a return line.  So I would do it all over again the same.  The filter is the same stock one for a 1987-up truck, GN, Syclone, Typhoon etc...  AC Delco GF652

One thing leading to another, better keep this in mind to avoid making the same mistake in the future. This is a great thread, man.

This should get me caught up to present day.  Sorry for slacking fellows.  I have had a lot going on.  Sold my house with a LARGE garage to move into a temp house with a 2 car garage and all my stuff it now in a POD in storage.
Not a lot happened between April 2016 until around April of 2018 with the truck.  It now has 37000+ miles on it.

Saturday, April 21st, 201:  Remember the blown fuse from April 2016, well that happened again a while later the fan would randomly stop working.  During this week it stopped and didn't come back on.  And I found the issue.  The fuse holder was Flawed.

I contacted Perma Cool and talked to them about this and they told me that they had updated the kits with a new fuse, so I had them send me an updated piece.  This won't flex and blow like the last one...

Sunday, July 8th, 2018: After making a short visit to the PowerTour 2018 stop in my town, I was prepping for South Eastern All Chevy/GMC Truck Nationals.  The tires on the Impala wheels were pretty much gone, and I had these 20's under the Blazer so I swapped them out because they had good tread.

Sunday, July 9th, 2018: Picked up a In Bed Aluminum Tool Box that I could mount in the bed and put important items in for the trip, jack, tools, extra parts, etc along with some parts that I could sell.  I spend the evening cleaning it up.  I also ordered a replacement key for it as they were using pad lock latches..

Monday, July 10th, 2018: Spent the evening mounting the box to the bed using the factory bed bolts to hold it down.  I discovered that it was going to be a pain to access it with the Extang FullTilt cover I had on the truck, but I ordered a new cover material anyway.

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018: For my search on a new cover I ran across the TruXedo Duece and ordered one.  This cover rolls up from the back, but the front portion flips backwards on a hinge.  I got it installed this evening.

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018: During the drive home the truck turned 36,000 Miles.

Thursday, September 6th, 2018: Picked up the new Crew Headliner proofs this week, this shows how the Duece Cover flips back.

Saturday, September 8th, 2018: Drive up to LS Fest with Live85 and walked around the show.  Talked to by buddy Rick Squires (STS Turbo) who is in business with Holley now and a buddy Bryan snapped this pic of my truck.

For the past several months the R10Driver has been a solid daily.  Sometime in April of this year I started getting a high speed vibration that I couldn't figure out.  Fast forward to the Southeastern Chevy/GMC Truck Nationals in July with the truck.

Friday, July 12th, 2019:  While driving to the All Chevy/GMC Nationals we got stuck in traffic which came to a stand still.  During all this when traffic started moving, the truck wasn't.  I had to gas it to make it shift to second.  We ended up making it to the hotel but only after the trans temp hitting 300 degrees.

Saturday, July 13th, 2019: I decided to risk it and have them pull the pan and see how bad the damage was and put a new filter and trans fluid in it.  Hard to tell from the pictures but that is alot of trash in the pan and the magnet is coated with metal.  In adition to the smell that rushed out when the pan was dropped.

We went ahead and went to the show and met up with a number of friends but we left early so I could hopefully drive it home.  Supprisingly it made it and we took the interstate the whole way and never stopped.  All 200 miles.  Trans temps were around 240ish.

20 miles from my house I had to stop and needless to say I drove the last few miles home in second gear.  Truck was at 38991.7 miles and the trans was toast.

Sunday, August 11th, 2019: My twin brother came over to help me remove the transmission from the truck.  For the past month I have had sciatic issues and I didn't want to drop the thing on the ground by myself.

Friday, September 6th, 2019: Me and my twin set out to LSFest 2019.  During this trip the truck hit 39000 miles and the trans temps never exceeded 215 degrees.  I know this because I watched it the whole way there.

Been a while but I just caught up on the R10 Driver series and I'm still impressed. I have recently acquired my own '87 R10 and have similar plans. Along with the R10 I also got an '83 K20 and a few months down the road I acquired an '83 K5 cucv 6.2. Unfortunately none of those are on the todo list anytime in the near future. Couldn't pass them up though because they were all free. My favorite!
