Steering column swap?
« on: October 31, 2013, 01:46:11 PM »
So my turn signal internals took a dump... As time permits I think it will be easier to write in a newer column then try taking apart the old one and fixing the turn signal stuff. I'm looking into getting one from a 90s Chevy truck or suburban. What is the highest year I can go? Also do I need to snag any wiring from the vehicle? Help is appreciated. Thanks!

What's under the hood??? If you have to ask maybe we shouldn't race...

There may be more variables but the burbs/blazers up to 91 were the same. What year is your current column? Does your truck have ac? the duct that runs under the dash under the column has to be moved when pulling the column. Either way is time consuming however if you choose to rebuild your current column at least you will know its done right if you put in a used column then you wont be certain about the condition. Also is the column has tilt it would be a good time to tighten that also see the tech section for that Capt did a great how to on that.

The turn assembly is the first thing to be removed.  Why not just repair it?

I do parts almost exclusively mail order.  I have the parts books, and search on GM part number.

Problem here guys is this truck is my daily. I have a unknown 80s column in here now. And the original stashed. I don't have time to wait for parts cause the PO PO don't care that it will be fix when the part get here ya know. So for now I'm at the yard trying to find one off a90s truck. Any years to look out for?

It's an 82. Just my luck they had an 84 in the yard with ah key. No tilt :-(

Got everything unbolted and it still don't want to slide all the way out... They will pull it for me and I'll go tomorrow and pick it up

Being a 82, keep in mind that in 83 the dimmer and other things moved to the column...
Ideally you need a pre-83 column to drop in.
