Has anyone mated an NV4500 to an LS engine?
« on: April 15, 2015, 05:42:41 PM »
Hi gang,

Just wondering if there's anyone here that has gone with an NV4500 or perhaps another five or six speed manual in their LS conversion? The transmission in my truck from the factory was the SM465 but I got an NV4500 from the boneyard for $75 that I'm rebuilding. Haven't found anyone using this trans with an LS engine yet though so I'm wondering if there's any hope.

Thanks!

Hope this helps

^^^You're the man! Thanks, csdineley! I've been looking for an article like this all week long! And today I called Advanced Adaptors to ask them if their kit, part #712500M would work and they said No: http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/712500m--flywheel-and-clutch-kit-for-ls-series--gen-3-engines/

Reading this article gives me hope again because right off the bat it mentions all of the stuff like the crank being flush with the back of the block etc. like in the Gen. 3 engines AA talks about in their kit. They weren't sure if the Gen. 4 engines like the LS3 I want to install was the same or not in that regard.

Thanks! Will do. I need all the reference I can get. I got to drive an old 1992 Chevy 3/4 ton diesel with an NV4500 in it last night that my brother was fixing some leaks on. First time I've driven something with an NV4500 in it. So I'm hoping I will like it backing this LS3 engine. Otherwise, I'm going to have to mess up the powdercoated frame to weld new mounts for a different transmission - maybe a six speed or a 4L70/4L85 etc.

You may already know this; the NV4500 mated to LS engines was available from the factory in Chevrolet/GMC trucks up to 2006.

On your NV4500, what year or make did you get?

1973 GMC K2500, Super Custom, Camper Special, 350, TH350, NP203, 4.10's
1974 Chevrolet K10, Custom Deluxe, 350, SM465, NP203, 3.73's

Thanks, Jason! I did not know that. I knew they had them mated to diesel engines in like 2003-2006 but not and LS. I haven't ever seen one so I wasn't sure.

The NV4500 I bought from the boneyard was taken out of a 1998 Chevy 1-ton.

I have a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 4x4 with a 6.0L and NV4500 that I bought new.

We were in New Mexico at the time, the dealer had one on the lot (just one) - we were going to test drive it and someone from Arizona came in and bought it... So I searched for another which I found at a dealer near Abilene, Texas. Based on the specs, I bought it sight unseen and had it brought in to New Mexico.  If I hadn't found that truck, I would've had to special order one.

They weren't real common, but I have seen a few other early to mid- 2000's with a gas engine and NV-4500.

Not to divert this too much, but...  I think even rarer is the 8.1L mated to the 6-speed NV5600. Engineer (member here) has one and I've seen a few U.S. Forest Service trucks with that setup, but overall pretty rare.

Very cool! Thanks for the info! I'll have to remember your application for when I go to the parts store to grab little things. Do you think your components that mate up to the tranny will also fit a 6.2L like the LS3 I'm planning to buy? Just wondering if it may be cheaper than to buy all the aftermarket parts like the flywheel from McLeod Clutches and stuff like that than say to just go to the local parts store and ask for a flywheel for a 2005 6.0L with NV4500, if it will fit.
