14 bolt FF axle won't go in
« on: October 26, 2021, 02:34:28 PM »
74 C30 - I got it up over the second set of bearings.  Less than 2 inches to go and it won't budge.  I know it's up against the gears because I can push and turn it and the driveshaft will turn.  But it won't go in!!  In the videos people just jiggle it a little and it goes right in.  WTH?  This was after a brake job and the passenger side is the only side I've disassembled so I know the axles didn't get switched.

I ended up getting some 2 1/2" bolts and forcing it on.  After the first inch it loosened up and I could hammer it the rest of the way.

Wow man, I've never owned one myself, worked on one or two.

Correction: I own (have neglected) a C30 3+3. Though I haven't gone into her that deep. (she keeps calling to me to FINISH her)

Something seems off... :o

Just a thought: how many miles are on it? Is there evidence of neglect: burned/ blackened/ no oil?

If so, there may a wear pattern that is causing your grief.

I guess even if there is, you getting the axle seated will just create a new one.

Move on brother!!

Most likely it's the splines and like Johnny said they have marked slightly. It's common especially on the ends where the splines taper to slide in. May be hard to get them out the next time but a set of jeweler's files will clean them up. Often the small bits, bumps and dents are hard to see so when you do the other side inspect the splines closely. Something as small as a piece of sand will take up all the clearance within the male and female splines.
Good luck and you may want a slide hammer for the next removal.
