700r4 Installation
« on: March 19, 2013, 04:54:56 PM »
Alright, installing a 700r4 into a 1984 chevy truck.  Unfortunately, the two-wire and four-wire plugs both got crushed and I was not able to tell where they went back to.  Anyway, I might be able to figure it out once I get the new pigtails in.  However, I am looking for a basic wiring diagram and maybe a visual breakdown of the transmission itself.  Just got to finish this wiring then I am done.  So any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are wiring diagrams in the tech section.

Ok well I have seen those, but can't seem to locate the lock-up pigtail wiring.  That should be the one with three wires coming out of a four-prong male plug.   As for the other one I realized I had changed the transmission back to the mechanical speed gear so I don't need the VSS wiring.

Still haven't figured out the lock-up plug though.

Thanks

On the 1985's the lockout switch it located above the passenger side valve cover towards the firewall. It'll have two vacume lines coming out going towards the front of the truck and then a spot for a plug in the rear. Might be a good place to check.

The 700r4 converter lockup vacuum switch is located on the DRIVER side of firewall. I had both vacuum switches on the firewall but the passenger one was ripped out when the 72 350 was swapped in since ESC isn't needed anymore. The passenger side switch is for ESC (Electronic Spark Control) which is totally unrelated. I still have the driver side switch which is the proper one.  It is usually located at the 10 o clock position of the brake booster if you are standing at front of truck.  You need to run a vacuum line to a manifold or ported source. It doesn't matter which since they both put out high vacuum at cruise speed and drop to low vacuum when accelerating. After the vacuum switch, the wiring runs down to the brake switch(or cruise switch if you have it). Then it runs from there to the 4 prong plug at the trans.
