     It sounds to me like most of the problems are from sitting too long and not being used.  Take 1 item at a time and I bet you find out that the problems are not that serious at all.
#1: The easiest and most obvious solution to any problem is 99% of the time correct.

If the carb kit includes a new needle and seat, you WILL need to check the float adjustment.

Ok. Any of you guys have any tips on these old 1 barrels?

How does the shifter come out?

Once you remove the shifter boot you'll see the round piece(kind of a cap) on top of the trans where the shift lever ends. grab it push down and twist it maybe an eighth to a quarter of a turn, lift it and slide it up(same concept as a taillight bulb on a larger scale). under that cap you'll see the shifter ball, which may or may not have a roll pin in it, I can't exactly remember. Its best to do this with the trans in neutral.

Hopefully I get some decent weather this weekend and I can do the tune up, carb, shifter and tranny lol. Thanks guys
