TRANS CROSSMEMBER AND HEADERS
« on: April 08, 2007, 10:19:00 AM »
I have a 79 C10 shortbed. The truck has what I believe to be the o.e. crossmember for a TH350 with the straight 6 engine.
I'm installing a 350/TH350 combo. I tried long tube headers before I tore the truck down and they came within 3 inches of the tranny crossmember on the drivers side. Thought about "shorty" or 3/4 length headers. I want the pipes up high. Have an "H" pipe and Flowmasters to install. The passenger side of the crossmember has a notch to clear the pipe. Thought about making or buying a new crossmember but DO NOT want to relocate all of my new brake and fuel lines on the pass. side. Any suggestions anyone? Tried to post a pic but couldn't. what's the process????

There's quite a few posts on this already. The shorty headers or 88 -up style headers work great for tucking in your pipes.

A cross member out of a 73 or 74 will work.
(some drilling will be required)
It has the humps on both sides for the headers to clear.
I have one in the garage, I'll post some pics when I figure out how to use this new camera

Any luck on the pics yet?  I purchased a set of the 88 up headers and they look great. EXCEPT that the left side drops right into the frame at the lower section. They're up for sale now. Maybe they'll work on a different year truck but not on mine.

Yep. Unfortunately I read it long after my headers were purchased ( a year ago). Thanx though. Figure i'll sell mine to recover the money spent and order the right ones.

It looks like those headers are 1 1/2 pipe id and 2 1/2 collectors......
Looking for 1 5/8 and 3 inch........
Any recommendations for that one?
maybe I'll have to check the Dynomax site.

If your left side header hits the frame all you have to do is make a tiny notch in the frame. I've only seen them contact where the O2 bung is on some of them. I've put several sets on these trucks. I have them on my 85 dd with a 350 right now. I can take pix if you want to see how they fit.

I'd really appreciate the pics. maybe I'm missing something. I eyeballed my set up and it just doesn't seem possible. I'm attaching a pic to show you how mine fits. I hate to seel them because they are such a nice pair of headers and they allow plenty of room for the plugs and wires. <br>

Those don't look like the same fit as what I've always used....I'll take pix when it's light out. I have a few pix but they really don't reveal the frame in these pix...

Vile, got any better pics for this setup?  How about Part numbers?  I am considering going with headers on my TPI Jimmy IF there is a y-pipe setup for this.  I am wanting to run it into the turbo on the drivers side.  Otherwise I will just build a system that will connect to the manifolds....

No pressure, if you can that would be fine.
