Title: Cab leaks - 1982 C10
Post by: Rtlane on November 26, 2018, 06:44:06 PM
I'm new to the forum and just purchased a 1982 c10. I have a couple leak points inside my cab that I need to address before remove surface rust on my cab floor. I would like to know the best way to address these issues.

Leak point 1:
Drivers side kick panel shown in photo 4 of the image link. Is this some kind of factory hole or what? Either way it obviously looks like it needs sealed.

Leak Point 2:
Drivers side inside cab right above the foot pedals has wires coming through. You can see the inside cab portion in photo 3 of the link. Photos 1 and 2 show the engine bay area at the firewall. This does not seem to leak when I spray a water hose directly over the hood cowl. When I spray it near the gap between the hood and the cowl, then it will leak which leaded me to believe that the water is getting into the engine bay. I noticed that there is a gap that looks too big between the hood and the cowl. This could be the culprit since the gasket on the inside rear of the hood is probably not making contact with the cowl area and is not blocking water from coming through. Look at photo 5 for the gasket, 6 for where I think the gasket is suppose to make contact when shut, 7 8 and 9 for the hood to cowl gap. I should probably still seal up some of the penetrations in the firewall since the wire and cable gaskets aren't working too well. There are other leaks that are coming into the cab from penetration points of wires and cables in through the firewall as well.

Leak Point 3:
Passenger side kick panel around the fresh air vent. The gasket it pretty much gone. I have some 1/2" wide window foam weatherstripping that is used for home windows on hand that I'm going to try. Or I may try to find the actual gasket online.

Any tips on fixing the leaks would be appreciate!

It might help if I post the link to the images  :D

I have not figured out how to add images and add comments after each one yet is why i'm using imgur.com

The fire wall wiring should have a grommet like the one your speedometer cable has, or a electrical box. Either way it should be sealed.
The hood cowl is supposed to let water in but it has a drain on one or both sides of the cab, they are possibly plugged with debris. Remove the cowl and try and clean it out. There should also be a plastic screen under your cowl that covers up the oval holes to stop debris from getting farther down.
I am uncertain on the kick panel leak from the photo. Could be it’s ok to plug it or there is supposed to be a bolt in there to hold the plastic kick panel on.
I’d start by replacing the grommets on the fire wall and possibly running new wires. I don’t like how that on has a wire splice in the grommet, it’s too big and will allow it to leak.
Good luck on your build.

Thanks for the reply. The cowl seems to be draining fine, although i’ll clean it out anyway just to be sure.

The area I was talking about was water getting unto the engine bay. The hood has molding show in the top of this photo:

And im assuming when the hood is shut, this should help prevent water from getting into the engine bay and therefore keeping water away from the wiring/cables that penetrate through the firewall. The gap on the hood looks like it might be keeping the molding from doing its job. I think i may need to adjust my hood to close this gap which should allow a proper seal when the hood is shut. What do you think?

Here is the gap on the drivers side:

Yes there should be a weatherstripping molding between your hood and cowl.
I wouldn’t adjust your hood unless the front is sticking out farther then the end of the fenders.
You can buy a new molding at   for bout $13 bucks.

It actually has molding. I just don’t think its making contact (sealing) due to the hood alignment on that side.

The front of the hood on the drivers side is forward a little bit.

I’ll try and adjust the hood or do some more testing to see if the molding is actually making contact. Also the truck missing the screen that goes underneath the cowl. I’m not sure if the screen helps with sealing water from going into the engine bay or not. It’s probably just to keep leaves and other debris from going into the drain.

Ok so now that I see the front of the hood compared to the fender, yes you should move the hood back so it lines up properly. It should help some if not completely.
