Title: Tremac tkx
Post by: Swampyankee74 on December 17, 2023, 04:15:39 PM
Has anyone installed a tremac tkx in these trucks? Looks to me like the transmission cross member would have to slide backwards about 1-3/8". But not sure if the height of the cross member is correct. Also I have a low hump truck. Looking to put it in a 74 gmc c15. Looking forward to any info, pros or cons

I havent but as with any transmission swap that doesnt match the factory offerings you will have to adjust the trans crossmember to fit.  As for the height, you need to verify this as you generally want it to be 2.5-3 degrees down and the axle yoke 2.5-3 degrees up.
A 4L80E will fit under a low tunnel trans so if it doesn't fit we sell an uncut transmission tunnel cover.  You would just need to cut the floor tunnel accordingly and bolt it in.

Just ordered a tremac tkx close ratio with 2.28 first gear and .68 overdrive from sst transmission out of Tennessee.  Sst was very helpful matching the gearing to the truck. Hopefully all goes well. I'll keep you guys posted on the install

Dial indicated my lakewood bellhousing.  It is out .004" with is within the .005" or less window tremec requires. I was very lucky considering I've read where people have lakewoods that are out.028".  New transmission arrived.  Have it put in place but need to open up my floor on my low hump truck a little bit more in order to bolt down the shifter. The large Hurst shift boot I already had installed should cover it.

My crossmember had to be slid back 1-3/8", there was already holes in the frame at this point.i bought this transmision through silver sport transmission. They verified the height of the crossmember in my 74 c15 will hold the tranny at the proper elevation. Still a bunch of work to do. But she will fit without major modifications.

Tranny is in the truck! She is rolling. Back and forth in the garage anyhow, first and reverse. Roads are white with salt and calcium.  Gotta Waite a bit for the shakedown cruise. But no weird noises at an idle in neutral or idle in gear with clutch in. So far it is promising.

It has rained for the last 4 days in Connecticut.  Hopefully enough to wash the salt and calcium off the road... took my first shakedown cruise with the 5 speed in it tonight. Did about 40 miles. 10 of them highway. So far so good, no weird noises,  smooth shifting. Slightly lower first gear is nice compared to the m21. Cruising at 65 on the highway just under 2100 rpm.

Looks like you have a hydraulic clutch installed. Would it have been an option to keep the old manual linkage instead?

I still have the stock mechanical linkage hooked up.

Nice. I've been a fan of the simplicity found with the old mechanical linkage. Probably never get around to a TKX swap myself but looks like a good option.
