cant pinpoint noise please help
« on: October 24, 2011, 06:13:33 PM »
Ok this noise is very noticeable in the morning when I go to work and when its cold outside. Its a whooshing or chuu chuuu  sound that increases and decreases with wheel speed. It almost sounds like something is rubbing my tires but I have looked and cant find anything. I notice it more when I am braking than when I am accelerating. I have searched the forum and cant find an answer. Anyone have an idea where its coming from? All help is greatly appreciated.... ;)

80 gmc sierra classic short bed 2wd 350 , it appears my lower control arm on the drivers side is very close to the rim. It has a rub mark on the rim as if it were touching it....

I think the control arm is only rubbing at full turn, this makes noise while driving and braking when wheels are str8.

jacked it up and checked for play in the wheel thinking it may be a bearing, there is very little play maybe an 1/8" at the most. I know how bearings sound, and to me this dosent sound like one but I could be wrong.

Is the truck pulling one way or another under normal driving and braking conditions?  Are the calipers releasing? Sliders frozen?  Brake hose collapsed?  That wheel bearing shouldn't have any movement in it, and if you can hear it click when shaking the wheel, it should be replaced.  I would pull it apart and check for scoring and if necessary replace or just repack the bearings then see if the noise is unchanged.  Also check the tires for broken or twisted belts while its in the air.  I'll check back when I can and see how things are progressing.

Sounds like a speedometer cable noise I had in my truck. Just had to remove, lube, and re-install it. I couldn't believe how loud it could get.

Worth a look! It may very well get worse on a cold morning and get better as it warms up. Disconnect it at the tranny, take a ride and see if the noise is gone.

If you're suspecting a tire, rotate the one you suspect to the rear and see if it changes anything. Lots of simple things you can rule out easily.

I have heard universal joints make that same noise.

Bit late for a reply, hope you've fixed it.

On the inside of the brake disc there's a thin tin plate. If its disturbed it can rub against the disc.
I only know this as me neighbour had an intermittant scrape/graunch noise.
Simply pull it a few mm away from the disc.

Hope it helps
