Title: A.I.R. pump on a 1985 C30 with a 350 Automatic.
Post by: zieg85 on October 01, 2010, 06:02:25 PM
No mention of it on the core support but I imagine it came with one originally being that it is a 1985.  Truck has no cats, and factory dual exhaust that looks to be original still.  Can anyone confirm if it had one originally and if it had what all did it hook too?  My air cleaner housing looks like it had 1 large hose going to it at one time and the water pump pulley has the thin belt but I don't have any ports on the exhaust manifold that I can see that was plugged.  Our county has revised its rules on emission testing so I have to do all I can to make it right.  In years past you could put a 10,000 lb truck plate on it and skip the test but not any longer.

I thought only 305's came with the air pump? I thought the tube in the aircleaner goes to the charcoal cannister?

My other 1985 with the 454/4 speed has 2 air pumps...

Zeig, I'll look at my 86 extended crew. Im about to put classic tags on it, so all that stuff is leaving. They dont even look for it here. I'll let ya know, and we'll see what you need that I have.

I would just take it through and let them tell you if it needs any special equipment.

The only visual inspection they do is the exhaust system, and check to see the gas cap hold the prescribed pressure/vacuum.  They run it on a dyno to simulate road conditions up to about 40 mph, they follow a curve...  Anyway you either pass or fail.  When I last tried my white truck it took them 11 tries, grinding gears, I was not happy but you can't move out of the waiting area until they are done.  It barely failed.  Once it fails there is a black mark against it and it goes on the vehicle history report.

That is why I want to put my best effort in getting it as right as a 25 year old truck can be with the current gas you can buy.  Fresh tune, carb and timing adjusted, oil changed and a can of that emission fixit gas additive and see what happens.

I'm assuming they test for NOx? They only other thing to do is put new cats on it. And then remove them after the test?

Do you have an EGR manifold? All you need is EGR and a cat and as long as you're running correctly you'll pass the tailpipe test. Just get a new gas cap to be sure.

C-30's in 1985 did not have cats from the factory, no unleaded fuel only on the gas gauge or the restricted unleaded nozzle gas filler tubes under the gas cap.  My 1985 C-20 with the 8600GVW didn't have cats either but being a 454 and 4 speed has 2 A.I.R. pumps which is still just the way it left the factory.
