Which cam??
« on: July 13, 2008, 08:44:49 PM »
Hey yall Im gonna pull the motor out of the stepside, and while it is out I want to put a cam in it, something with a very lopey idle, I was thinking a comp xe270 or a comp thumpr, or any other recommendations?? also im thinkin about putting a noisy gear drive in place of the timing chain, does anyone have a clip of a motor running one of these?? I heard it gives it sort of a supercharger type whine  ;D thanks

gear drives suck and sound obnoxious not cool. As far as the cam goes give more info. you can put any radical cam and it will sound bli blob bloopie but you need to match your cam to engine dispalcement, heads, intake, exhaust, trans, etc.

its a stock sized bore (as far as I know) 350, stock heads, th350 tranny, i plan on a cheapie summit brand air gap intake, headers of some sort, probably long tube, 2 1/2 exhaust most likely srtaights or cherry bomb extremes, hope this helps

If you're keeping everything else besides the intake and headers bone stock I wouldn't go bigger than this.

what comp cam is comparable to that cam? will that one give me a lopey idle?? doesnt have to be extreme, just really noticeable  ;D  ;D my dad suggested a comp xe270, will this work with my setup? he really wants me to put a comp in it because we've had good luck with them before

You'd probably like the sound of the summit cam better though.

Ok thanks, if i run that cam from summit, will i have to change anything?? i.e. different converter? also vile since im talking to you, what would be a good intake for my setup? this will be a daily driver/weekend warrior type deal I plan on running a holley carb that is freshly rebuilt, I believe its a 750, may be a 650, im not sure though thanks again  ;D

a dual plane intake like the Edelbrock Performer. You can keep your stock converter with that cam

I recommend a dual plan intake.  I would skip the gear drive, the sound is annoying after about a week, and it won't go away.

Make sure your valve springs won't bind. I don't think they will but I would check with the cam manufacturer to be certain.

As for the sound I think the tighter the lobe seperation the more lopey the idle but could be wrong. We put a Comp 270 magnum in a buddies small block and it sounded nice.

Do you need a truck for work?  Why not keep your 73-87s and get a crappy little used Civic or Corolla for a commuter?  That's what I'm gonna do.

I've always been of the notion that V6 full size trucks have to work that much harder to pull around the extra weight, so getting the smallest V8 available (the 4.8 in your case) is worth maybe 1 MPG less for the extra power it has.
