(i can't believe we're discussing this with $4 a gallon gas prices but)i finally opened it up to see what the crate motor could do:

16.8 just as i suspected it would probably do.  i understand that this is not a blazing e.t., however we must remember that i a) have 2.56 rear gears, b) have stock, off-brand tires which actually spun ever so slightly on take off, c) weigh at least 3800 lbs give or take and d) am not running headers.

Additional notes:
Test was conducted at approx 8:30 this evening with 3/4 tank.  Temperature about 77 degrees.
Approx speed at the end of the 1/4 was around 79mph, i think?
i feel with additional carb tuning, ignition tuning (neither of which i have time to learn/do right now) headers, slicks and 4.56 gear, we can get into the 16.5 range easily.

i could not get the 0-60 timer to work for some reason.

Stewart, Plug away at it & the time will come down. The 4.56's will be too much gear for your engine. You'll run out of rpm in high gear & still have a quarter of the track to go, unless you put some BIG tires on it. 3.40-3.73 with something near a 28" tire should split the track up better. Are you doing these times from a in-car device (G-tech or something)? Have Fun, Lorne

Yes, this is being measured with the Cyberdyne digital tach/speedo combo gauge.  See other post:

i didn't know that the gauge had 0-60 and 1/4 timer capabilities until i recieved the gauge----i bought the gauge to accurately track mpg.

It reads off the transmission output gear not through g-forces, so my 1/4 time is actually a little slower---because i spun the wheels a little bit on take off which in a way is good considering i have 2.56 gears.  i guess this means the engine has some power.

The gauge measures 0-60 and 1/4 everytime starting from when the vehicle is at a standstill.  So i'm not sure why the 0-60 time didn't show up.

i'm not really interested in going any faster right now---i mainly tested it just to see what it would do.  i probably won't be doing any further testing anytime soon as the other car is back in service.

I ran an 11.27 @ 131mph in my S10 with a lousy lousy 60 foot time due to street tires.  it was an 87 s10 with a 355ci, scat forged crank, forged h beam rods, keith black flat tops, ported and polished vortecs, bigger valves, 1.6 roller rockers, ported intake mani, and a holley 750 double pumper.  OH and a small fogger  8)

street truck driven daily.

There's definitely something wrong with my combo if you can scratch a little rubber off the line with 2.56's and a 2.53 1st and I can barely get a peep with 3.73's and a 3.06 1st (just 235/75-15 all season tires before you ask).  I'd say it feels about like my sister's Toyota Avalon which is a mid-17 second car, but definitely much slower than my mother's Acura TL-S (a mid-15 second car).  >:(

We've got the same engine, but I'm running headers and single 3" exhaust, MSD HEI dist, edelbrock performer, edelbrock 1406 carb (.073 x .042 rods in .098 jets, orange springs, .095 secondaries), 14* initial and 35* total in by 2800 (full vacuum on the advance canister), rock solid 5.5 psi fuel pressure.  The only thing I haven't checked is possible bad cam lobe, but the initial break-in was definitely botched (had leaks galore on initial startup and had to back it up into the garage under its own power).

Oh well, sorry to hijack, I'd say 16.8 is just dandy for a stock crate with no go-fast goodies and 2.56's in the rear.  If you are looking to get the best combination of power and economy you might consider a 700R4 and 3.42's or 3.73's in the rear.  I never thought I'd recommend a 700, but there you have it.  I guess thanks to Vile, Capt, and Haulin' It, I'm now considering the 700R4 as a potential performance trans.

i ran 13.7's with a 425hp 454 and 700R-4. trans had a 2800 stall and 3.73 gears w/ 26" M/T ET radials. shift at 5700 thru the lights at 5000. needed more gear. trans was AC Delco stock replacement with $60 B&M stage 2 shift kit and modulator that would hold 3/4 throttle in OD before downshifting ( stk is 1/2 throttle ). 700's can definetely be built to handle some serious grunt.

One way to do it is to look at the performance crate packages available, look at what componets you already have and try to copy the rest keeping in mind the fact you are pushing a half tone truck. I called Summit when I buuilt mine and told them I wanted around 450 horse built around the Trick Flow heads and they pulled out a dyno sheet from a guy who did the same thing and gave me the parts he used. I didn't dyno mine but it runs well.

sorry static22, bad terminology. it's a B&M kickdown kit part #70237. as stated it allows you to cruise at higher speeds in OD than stock before a forced downshift into 3rd.

We went to Pittsburgh Raceway on Saturday. My wife made her fastest-to-date pass...12.54 @ 108. She still needs a tenth to beat my best in the truck. Figuring her weight break, there is at least Two tenths in it she needs to find. She came back to the pits smiling & said "I knew that was a good one, it felt good". I think I'll be in trouble before long... she will only be happy at this speed a little while, once  she is comfortable, then we will have to ante up. The truck launches straight & drives VERY nice at this speed, so it won't be long before it's no different than the drive to the store. Lorne

just a 305 with some good heads  lol, sorry im used to racing against people on the street  super secret lol

406 sbc, really big cam, race ported intake and heads, trans brake on a 400, 325 drag radial, fiberglass front end, and i took everything off that doesnt make it go fast or stop, pic above is without the fiberglass fenders and front,  oh and a a lot of nitrous  on a progressive ;D

i got it all apart trying to make it legal,i live right next to moroso and now that they are redoing the track i think 9's are in my future  trying to make it lighter to offset the cage i am going to put in

weight isn,t where it should be,  over the rear wheels  gets a little loose  usually just foot brake it but its there so i use it i t makes me more consistent  but what i lack in 60 ft i make up in mph  its like a freight train lol

i don't know---i just had a hankering to try it today:

17.9 e.t.

Now we have to remember this is a stock LG3 305 with a 2 barrel.

i was, however, able to still spin the right rear tire.   And i did not load up against the converter either---i left off idle.

1/4 tank.

The 305 still had enough torque to spin the tire for about 6-10'.  With 2.56 gears!

Still couldn't get the 0-60 timer to work for some reason.

70ish degrees.   i have no idea what timing is set at and the only thing that is modified would be dual exhaust with flowmasters.


Stats:

Stock LG3 305 with rochester 2 bbl
Th-350C trans
2.56 rear diff gear non-posi
Off brand 235/75 r 15's
Weight---stock 1/2 ton
Dual exhaust with stock exhaust manifolds.  Flowmaster mufflers.

Wow, it's been almost a yr since my last attempt.   Today i, for some reason, had a hankering to try it again ( i did not realize the last time was 10/7/10).   i thought because it was cooler----this was at 10PM i would get a better time.

18.3  No wheelspin this time---i had to get a new tire (see post in the body section entitled "Don't be too cheap......")   A hankook optimo 727.

So i think the only reason why i had wheelspin last time was because i had off brand 15yr old tires?   Because there was no wheelspin the timer registered a slower and more accurate  since it reads off the transmission's output for the speedo cable.

i was amazed at the acceleration in 1st gear.

the timers should set off at the first sign of movement from the speedo cable so it would give you a reading if you timed the tree perfect with no delay

Before my new heads and tires, I ran a 18.62 at 87. I havent tested it yet. Its my C20 in my sig.

Sorry it took so long;  i was busy with family stuff.

4.3  v-6 this time.

Using  the Race Timer app:

1/4 mile   19.8 secs   70mph
0-60     13.5 secs and it took 778 feet

Using stopwatch and physically measuring 1320 feet:

19.60 secs.

These are NOT great times, but at least now the  engine runs right.  i had to get the heads fixed-----valve seats no good and a few valves bad.

i left off idle, but the second run i ran it up against  the converter just a little and got some wheelspin.

Now, we have to remember that even with the v-6, i'm still around 3700-3800 lbs.    i have 2.56 rear and the tires are 29 inches  tall  235/75 15.   Also, i don't have vortec heads.

i have to add that i couldn't seem to get it to rev past 3600 rpm or so.

This was on a road that, for some reason, just doesn't  have a whole lot of traffic and never did----like one car every few minutes.   This is the road that my uncle would take me for rides on when he was testing his cars.    Was he a  bad influence on me?     Yes!  :)
