6,2 diesel powerless

Hey! After a long time, I am back. A lot of family issues and such to deal with. Anyway, I have a 6,2 diesel, a 1983 chevy van, with a 700 transmission. Lately, it's totally powerless on fourth gear. It runs fine until 4th gear kicks in, when it is still fine, but with no power. My best clue is that the diesel filter needs changing. As far as I understand (without actually searching for it, since the van is parked outside on the street and it's cold and dark), the filter is really easy to change, and it's one of the few things in the van actually located where you can reach it.
Does this make any sense? If anyone here is selling them, I can change the filter tomorrow, and be happy!

If you keep it in drive (leave it out of od) does it have full power?
As far as the fuel filter, why not just buy 1 at the parts store?

Well, I didn't drive it outside of the OD mode, but I couldn't drive it faster on the third gear at kickdown. On the other hand, I was a bit careful, and didn't push it too hard anyway. I ordered a fuel filter today, so I will have it tomorrow. Hopefully it will solve the problem!

That makes more sense, kinda seemed odd that You were looking for a fuel filter on this forum.
When is the last the filter was changed?

I have owned the van more or less a year, and never changed it. It might have been replaced by the guy I bought it from, that had owned it a year or two, but I am not sure. I thought so, that's why I didn't do it sooner, but now I start to doubt it.

transmission could be hooched, they are know for slipping in overdrive when they are about to go

I am not totally sure, but I don't think it's slipping. It just has no power. If it was slipping, wouldn't it seem more like it had power, but losing speed anyway?

On youtube, there's a video of a guy with a 6,2 diesel Suburban '88 changing the fuel filter. He has another filter than I have, and some air bleed and water drainage that I didn't see on mine. He has four holes on the fuel filter, and I have only two... How do I get rid off the air in mine, before starting it?

Via google, I found someone saying that this engine gets rid off the air automatically while glowing. Is that reasonable? Since it doesn't have a valve for this close to the fuel filter, as I have seen on other chevy diesels, the other option would be taking off each "inlet" to the engine, and let them bleed, but that would take hours! It's almost impossible to reach some of them, since it's in a van.

When I change a diesel fuel filter I just fill it with auto trans fluid
I've had people tell me that was bad for the engine but I've never had an issue with it

The problem with the filter is that the holes are on the side, so if I don't dismount even the filter holder, everything I would put in the filter would leak out before the filter is in place.

Might be a good time to upgrade to a spin on fuel filter set up.
Mine has a primer pump on top and a bleader screwvon the front.
It make changing filters and bleading the system an easy job that won't drain your batteries.
You can buy everything you need at Napa for about $125.
