what muffler should i run?
« on: October 09, 2009, 11:54:35 PM »
Well with my new motor id like to be able to hear it a little better so im gona swap out my turbo mufflers with something with a little more tone and im debating on what to go with! My cueernt setup is long tube headers custom built 2 1/2 y pipe into 3in high flow cat then y into two turbo mufflers dumped before the axle. Im thinking about going with a single muffler with 3in in and dual 2 1/2 out and dump it and posibly run tails out behind each tire. Debating on a 14in magnaflow (most expensive) flowmaster knockoff or a dynomax bullet (def run tails with this one) let me know what you guys think and if any of yall have any clips of a good sounding single exhaust that flows well let me here it please :) thanks guys

Too bad you have a cat truck... My 77 has hooker super comps, an H-pipe and 2 glasspacks. quiet in town and roars real good when I'm on it! I've got my tips at a 45 angle in front of my tires. Has a muscle look. Don't know about your muffler tho, I like my glasspacks

Id run true duals but its getting hard to find a place around that will inspect it now adays. When i got mine it had manifolds and 2 1/4 true duals no h or x and glasspacks straight out the rear.

team39763's post about selling some mufflers "2 Flowmaster 10series single chamber mufflers. 3" in and out.  One was new when I bought it, the other had been used.  I put a couple passes and a couple miles on them. $60+shipping." but you gots to be a supporter to buy them

Avoid flowcrappers,(They don't flow)  and glasspacks( Makes your shoot sound like a dumptruck with a busted manifold )  get a good dynomax ultraflow, or a magnaflow,  they are about the best sounding and the best flowing mufflers out there.

^^^What he said.  Although I do tend to favor the sound of the "flowcrappers".

What's wrong with glasspacks? Not enough backpressure? I love the sound of them, but that's me!

Glasspacks actually do not flow as well as many think they do and they deteriorate quickly.

Have you tried straight pipes?  I know the stock cat on my 95 was sufficient "muffler" when the muffler went I had a 3" pipe put in its place.  It sure had a great sound when you stood on it yet taking it easy in town wasn't to loud.  My $.02

i took my glasspacks and put them on backwards i think it might of made them a little louder but what i had was headers true duals punched out cats glasspacks then 45% into 6"tips right before the rear tire that was back in 04 then next thing i know everyone around here had them. wernt to loud sometimes, and still had plenty of power

I had flowmasters on my camaro and I wasn't a big fan.At the time the motor had 11.5 compression with a big cam and idled at about 1K rpm's. It sounded obnoxious to me. I installed Dynomax mufflers and loved them.
It's tough call, 20 years ago I would have killed for that Flowmaster sound.
Exhaust tone is a personal choice. My only recommendation would be on the tailpipe location/angle.
My red beater truck has manifolds with glasspacks. The exhaust tips are at a 90 degree angle and you can hear the exhaust bounce off of cars as you drive by. It's tough to explain.
My blue truck has headers with Flowmasters (it idles at 700 rpm)
and the tips are at 45 degrees. They don't have that exhaust bounce effect that the red truck has.
 Hope this helps

Yup. I've learned over the years that the guy with the loudest exhaust, is usually the slowest..lol  and you want as little backpressure as you can get with a exhaust, needing backpressure is a stupid myth some one came up with years ago.
