Hey vortec headed guys!
« on: July 27, 2008, 12:02:57 AM »
I'm just curious to know what size cams are you guys running with your vortec headed engines, and did you have any machine work done to them??  I got a stock set of vortecs, and I'm wanting to use the L79 cam (.447 lift) I was worried about the clearance with the vortecs with this lift cam, because I know you can't go too high with them

thanks

Chris

If you go any bigger than that cam you should get the appropriate springs and make sure you have the correct installed height.

If I remember correctly, the lift is limited to about .470" lift depending on retainer used.  But you should always check this clearance yourself while assembling your engine, regardless of what anyone tells you.  I would also suggest a cam with 6-10 degrees more exhaust duration than intake, as these heads have somewhat weak exhaust ports relative to the intake.

I talked to a few machine shops and they said that cam will work fine with the stock L31 springs, I'm getting a valve job, new seals, and getting them shaved to 60cc, the L79 cam should work great with the compression and the edelbrock performer rpm, so I'm not worried about my 0-60 times or my 1/8th mile time, I just want a good soundin cam for cruise in effect and that cam pulls hard anyways!
