79 350 timing anomaly
« on: February 23, 2017, 06:08:33 PM »
I am restoring a 1979 C10 with a 350 4bl quadrajet. The timing has been off since I got it. Tried setting to timing line... When on timing line spit and sputtering. Upgraded distributor, same thing. Broke open and replaced timing gears(which the timing marks where on by the way just a tad bit of slacking chain) same thing. Harmonic balancer looks fine..... I'm lost.

Find TDC and check the marks on the balancer.  They have been known to slip.

this

if youre not sure where to start when it comes to timing its best to start at the beginning remove all your plug wires and find tdc put wires on then double check your wires

Some timing tabs were off to the side by p\s pump and some were staight up where you had to look behind water

Thanks for the suggestions. I did timing job done . and new water pump while I was in it, adjusted valves,  and new wires..... Runs better but when 4 barrel kicks in its like a horrible miss. Checked plug colors and they look great. The plugs are only 6 months old but I guess I'm gonna change them. 2 plugs on the right bank and 1 on left blank are flashing blue, not exactly arcing but flashing.

So I changed plugs.... Added an additional ground.(there was only one ground strap to passenger side head so I put 00 gauge wire to frame from driver side head) still won't take fuel when 4 barrel opens and even with new plugs and wire still have a plug on each side flashing not arcing like bad plug wires but flashing

Set the timing by a vacuum gauge or just by ear
Drive it hard up a hill
Advance the timing 2 degrees
Run it hard up a hill again
Keep doing that till it starts knocking at full throttle up hill
Then retard timing 2 or 3 degrees
