85 GMC 3/4 Ton 2WD to 4WD Conversion
« on: June 24, 2005, 01:37:00 PM »
I have the above mentioned Suburban. I would like to know exactly what parts that I would need and what I would have to do to convert to 4wd. GVW is 8600lbs with a 350hd engine and a tubo 400 transmission. I want to keep the transmission.

Thank you all for your time.

Respectfully,
Dave

You basically need the complete frame out from under a 4x4.  Only the framerails are the same.  You would also need the entire drivetrain minus the motor.  It would be cheaper/easier to find a rusted 4x4 and put your body on it, OR just buy a 4x4 Suburban.

BTW, you won't be able to keep the transmission since it is for a 4x4, it would have to be matched with a new output shaft that would go into the transfercase.

Thank you Chris. You may have saved me some time and given the motor a new place;;; My 84 Trans Am.

You have to weld on the hangers for the front leaf springs, you have to remove your existing engine cross member and put in new motor mounts. You may be lucky like I was and actually have the correct tranny in your truck. You have to also weld in the new shocks mounts as the 4x4 shock mounts are in a different location. It can be done in a weekend if you have all of the parts. The best way to go about it is to get a donor truck so you have all the parts and measurements right there. You can also end up with the right tranny, transfer case and all that you need.
