Title: 9.5 14 bolt spider gear pin bolt broke, HELP!
Post by: 1989bmw535i on December 05, 2023, 10:26:49 AM
Well boys I'm in a bit of a predicament, I'm moving from the Portland area to missoula mt this weekend and I'm getting close to getting my 76 k20 road ready, while changing the rear diff fluid I noticed the spider gears are worn pretty bad I don't want to dump a bunch of money into this axle as I have a 14 bolt full floater for the future but I need to drive this out there this weekend, I pulled the bolt out and the majority stayed in the carrier, do you think I can limp it like this? Any help is appreciated!

I had a L/S rear end let go at about 50 mph in my 02 Taco with 231,K on the clock.
Had just gone over RR tracks (very smooth) and shifted back up to O.D.
I had warnings with increased noise/growling but figured it wouldn't be a catastrophic event.
I figured wrong, about 200yds past the crossing there was a hard bang, bang, bang and the truck went hard left and crossed center, then another bang, bang, bang and she went hard right and onto the shoulder. It sounded like two guys were beating on the tailgate with a sledge hammers.
An hour from home and it had to be trailered back.
I have no idea what let go, I just found a low milage match replacement in California and swapped the entire axle out.
Your results may vary.

Yes, there is a pin on the end of the bolt and the part of the bolt is still in there hence not letting the pin pull out

With patience, you can center punch and CCW drill (lefthand bit) the center of the broken pin then use an Easy Out to remove it.  If you're lucky, the pin will back out while drilling.  Service the spider gears, install a new retaining bolt and you're done.  It's tedious and character testing, but is the better option.

Just get the tool to remove it. I've used mine 100 times.

Hey sorry for the radio silence, I've been moving. But it made it to Montana! I'll definitely have to try that removal tool. It'll work while it's still in the diff housing?
