Rear end blue's!
« on: August 11, 2015, 06:06:54 PM »
Had the oil changed on my 86 c20. They forgot to tighten the rear end plug. All of the oil blew out the back, coated my bumper under the bed. I refilled, now it leaks. There's a little play in the drive shaft. What's my options? I've had the truck going on six years, I only drive it occasionally.
Thanks!

First I would see if however changed the fluid would stand behind their mistake.  Do you know where the leak is?  Where is the play at?  More info is needed to help you.

Unless you drove a long distance, wide open and pulling a heavy load after the gear oil leaked out, the wheel bearings and gears should not have suffered any damage.

Even if you left the fill plug entirely out of the case, it's high enough that ALL the oil would not have blown out right there..

Like zieg was asking, where is it leaking now?  Pinion seal might be a suspect.

It was a week before I noticed the whine. The leak is coming from the seal. I'm told the play in the drive shaft is what I need to be concerned with. The play in the drive shaft moves maybe 3 milli meters up and down.
I appreciate your advice!

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess your pinion bearing is going out.  Was that seal changed before this all happened?

It's going into the shop on Monday. I'm changing the gearing for lower rpms
