Keep getting side tracked with daily life but still making progress. More rearranging of the shop. Got the old exhaust off so I can mount the new manifolds. Motor positioned better to pick for mounting to frame. Spray gun is so much easier than rattle cans and way less fumes and over spray. Primer shot well, ment to go to town and get hardener for the paint but had other things to do.

Haven't made much progress lately but back on it. Made a new shop heater, took awhile, but warm enough to get back to painting. Mixing this rustoleum is kind of a guessing game. Primer was great but the paint takes a little plating with. Mixed it too then the first time and was runny. Think I got it now. Definatly going with different paint for the fenders. But this is fine for the parts under the truck.

Brackets and guards mounted. Paint turned out better than I expected after it dried. Fixing to rain so I'm not going to mount the tanks. Got to put a pump in one still. Probably do that, mount the new manifolds on the motor and do some more painting tonight.

Well this sucks... both sides. Good thing I'm a welder by trade. Just hope I have enough Aragon

Welding a nut to the bolt didn't work. Broke 2 off and then built weld up on it twice to where I could get some vise grips on and that didn't work. Don't have any small easy outs so going to hunt around Monday so I can avoid putting a helicoil in. Got the other fuel pump mounted in the tank. Put on the motor mount adaptors but got some cutting to do for the mount shell to clear the block.

I wouldn't try an ez out, too much risk of breaking it. I would rather center punch, use a small drill bit and go progressively larger.

If it's done well enough, a tap can clean the threads, or if you get close to the end and think you may be off center, you can try welding a nut to it, the weld will partially fill the void and give a stronger purchase, plus since you've drilled the center it should make removing a little easier.

If you are going to use the weld a nut trick, the stud surface needs to be cleaned or scored well enough for it to bite. Turn the welder up high and get it out while it's hot.

The best type of extractors I've used...

...make rapid work of boring a hole in a broken bolt/stud remnant (that is easily redirected toward the center of the original hole if the extractor begins to drift sideways while drilling - which is nearly inevitable).

The extractors work well when used in conjunction with an effective penetrating oil such as PB Blaster or Silikroil and the direct application of heat.  If the remnant proves too stubborn for the extractor, painstakingly follow up using a compact pneumatic die grinder and sharp 5/16" carbide burr (imaged below) to remove the rest of the bolt/stud core until barely exposing the crown of the original bolt hole threads.  When done perfectly, what is left of the old bolt threads will pull out of the hole in the shape of a Helicoil.  I've saved expensive crankshafts applying this method and successfully removed many broken exhaust studs with the engines still in vehicles.  It should be much easier to accomplish with an engine mounted on a sturdy stand.  Patience and constant checking are key.

Think I'm going to try welding a nut on it again. I was letting it cool but I didn't think about heating the head. Watched a guy on YouTube, after letting it cool he went around the bolt with a propane torch for a minute and they backed right out.

This was a PITA. Had to bend the tank flanges more with these newer style tank mounts. Was able to get a washer and nut barely on the rear strap. Front strap I tried this clamp first and wasn't enough. Then I got a strap and got it tighter than a banjo string and was able to get half a nut started. Then I synched up on it and backed off to put a washer on.  Had to take the tank guard off to get anti squeak pads on. Don't know what I was thinking when I put them on. On the hunt in my parts for the passenger side hose assembly. When they put the fuel tank in my brothers truck they took it off and I got to find it. Found the cap and plastic housing that bolts to the bed but not the hoses or the metal fill neck. Crossing fingers.

After everything being stripped, blasted, painted and ready to put back together, you would think there wouldn't be any road blocks. So apparently the clam shell mounts on these trucks have a triangle or heart shaped indentation in the middle. I didn't know this. The ones I have have a U shaped intention. Messaged the maker of the swap mounts and got a quick reply that they look like mounts from a GMT400, and sent a pic of the original mount with part #. So in my luck both donor sets I have are the wrong style. Some how I never threw away one of the shells from the wrecked frame that is all bent up. It fits but now need to locate a new set. Last pic is what the mount should be.

Jackpot, got the hood back out and went after the manifold bolt again. Got the torch out and put enough heat around the broken bolt to get the moisture to go away about an inch all the way around and was able to unscrew it with a pair of channel locks. In my line of work I should have known better to think of that but hey it happens.

Squares are getting kind of scarce in the junk yards. Found a filler neck today for $5. Saved me about $75

Getting some painting done while it's warm out. Sourced out some mounts for free. Getting cab mounts ready. Master cylinder is for my 84.

The original builder of this truck I grew up with and stayed great friends all my life past away after a motorcycle accident first of this year and it's been hard to get motivated on the build. But I'm back at it now, got some new ideas and some new toys help with the build.

Just got in a 37* flare head for my eastwood flare. I've decided to completely scrap the stock fuel and brake line locations. Going to run A/N fittings on everything, and 95 percent hard line. Already have most the stainless line but I may not have enough 1/4". Ordered a bunch of fittings but dont plan on bending anything except maybe rear brake lines until I get the cab and motor set. Ordered a proportion valve that bolts to the master cylinder.

Last few days I been tearing apart harnesses. Ripped apart the rear truck harness to save the full length trailer plug harness. Decided to take the rest apart for free wire for other plans. Bad thing about that is none of it is guage stamped. Got to pull out the old micrometer to figure that out.

I had ordered a wire labeler several days ago and it still hasn't showed up, so I'm using the old method for now. Made it half way through the engine harness last night. Got a few wires I need to research a little harder before I pull them.
